er ¬ and family negroes smoked out of and family the negroes smoked out of their home at midnight Saturday and killed by night riders lay all the next day Sunday on the spot where they were shot until about sundown white people sent out coffins and looked after their burial There were eight in the family three being killed outright four wounded who will die and one missing who is supposed to be dead- A negro doctor went out to see the injured but for fear of the night riders refused to go back again Other ne ¬ groes too were afraid to go near the scene of the tragedy The horror of this massacre seems to have had a stupefying effect on the authorities as no arrests have been made They sad they are doing noth ¬ ing because they do not know where to begin Walker is said to have had the repu ¬ tation of being a surly negro It was charged that he had cursed a white woman and threatened to shoot the white man who went to her defense The night riders numbering about 50 surrounded the home of Walker shortly before midnight and command- ed ¬ him to come out and take a whip ¬ ping Walker declined and fired upon the night riders whereupon they satu ¬ rated timbers of the house with coal oil and set fire to them In a few mo ¬ ments the house was a mass of flames Walker pleading for mercy threw open the door of his cabin and ran out into the open He was riddled with bullets and fell screaming to the ground Following her husband Walkers wife appeared in the doorway She held in her arms their infant child and begged- the Night Riders for mercy Disre ¬ garding her pleadings the infuriated- mob opened fire and a bullet pierced- the body of the infant in its mothers arms A second shot struck the moth- er ¬ in the abdomen and she fell still holding the dead body of her child Terrorstricken by the flames which were licking all sides of the cabin yet fearing to venture into the open the remaining children of Walker shrieked above the noise of the crackling wood Then the 5yearold girl came out fol ¬ lowed by three other children Boy Probably Burned The girl was killed outright and the other children received wounds which it is believed will prove fatal There is hardly accompanied by her daughter Miss Maud Mr W R Tompkins came up from Fort McCoy and moved his family to that place He has a lucrative position with the Rentz Lumber Company- Mr and Mrs J C Massey and Mas ¬ ter M C spent Saturday and Sunday with relatives at Kenka Mrs N L Smith of Wildwood Is a pleasant visitor here She is a former resident of this place and her friends- are very glad to see her She leaves this week for an extended visit to her brother in Augusta Ga Mr J B Hall supervisor of our school made a business trip to Ocala last week Mrs O G Enicks of Jacksonville Is expected here this week to spend the winter She will keep house and oc ¬ cupy the McBride residence- Mr Bert Pegram who has been spending the summer in Louisville- Ky is coming to visit his home folks Mrs W H Massey is visiting her daughter Mrs Newsome Scruggs of Valdosta Ga Our school is fine Miss McGahagin is a most excellent teacher and is giving entire satisfaction- Two of the pupils are quite l1IlIin shall be paid in to the State Treas ¬ urer and set apart by him to the credit of the State Board of Educa ¬ tion to be apportioned and disposed- of for the benefit of said Institutions- as required by the act creating and maintaining the same known as Chapter 5384 of the Laws of Florida approved June 5 1905 JOINT RESOLUTION proposing an amendment to Section Thirtyfive of Article Five of the Constitution- of Florida relating to establish ¬ ments of Courts- Be it Resolved by the Legislature of the State of Florida That the following amendment to Section Thirtyfive of Article Five of the Constitution of Florida Is hereby agreed to and shall be proposed and submitted to the electors of the State for approval or rejection at the next general election hereafter that Is to l say said Section Thirtyfive of said I Article shall be amended so as to read as follows Section 35 No courts other than herein specified shall be established in this state except that the legislature I may provide for the creation and es ¬ tablishment of such additional judi- cial ¬ circuits as may from time to time I become necessary and for the ap- pointment ¬ by the Governor and con ¬ i firmation by the Senate of additional I circuit judges therefor whose terms of office and general jurisdiction shall be the same as is hrein provided for the circuit judges herein already pro ¬ vided for and may
