from four to six Miss Bessye Porter was the hostess at a delightful porch party which she gave in honor of Miss Florence Bis bee one of the most attractive so- ciety ¬ girls of Jacksonville The spac ¬ ious veranda of the Hood home was converted into a bower of woodland the entire porch being screened in by dogwood blossoms and yellow jessa mine Hammered brass jardinieres holding large palms were used to good effect Under a canopy of green and yellow jessamine delightful grape ¬ fruit punch was served The punch table was covered in bowls of yellow and purple pansies and a bunch of purple pansies being frozen in the iced punch Four tables for the game of progressive logomachy were placed around the veranda each table hold ¬ lets ing a cut glass bowl of parma vio ¬ At the conclusion of the games it was found that Miss Pauline Sullivan- was the winner of the prize a dainty handmade linen shirtwaist holder- To the guest of honor was presented a beautiful white lace fan In the living room which was bright- in bowls of violets and pansies nut cream almonds cake and coffee were served The cream was in yellow jes ¬ samine ramkins Each guest was giv ¬ en a bunch of pansies as a ExPoliceman Homer Dean Fined 100 Messrs Mclver and Tucker Discharged- The auditorium at the mayors court was packed this morning until standing room was at a premium There were several minor cases dis ¬ posed of R T Russ drunk fined 5 John White disorderly conduct dis ¬ charged Israel Watson disorderly conduct 25 and costs Mr Pursen I fighting 5 and costs J Graham dis- orderly ¬ 25 and costs Marie Wil ¬ I liams disorderly conduct 15 and costs All of the above parties were colored I The cases were then taken up- I against Mr McIver Mr Walter Tuck- er ¬ and Officer Dean Mr Mclvers case was heard first He made a statement after pleading not guilty to the charge of disorderly conduct or fight- ing Mr Mclver said Dean made the assault on him entirely uncalled for or unprovoked that he had his right hand on his gun when he cursed and struck him Mclver and that at the second blow he drew the gun and held- it to his Mclvers face About this time some one Mr Chas W Smith he thought attracted Deans attention- and as Dean turned a little Mr Mclver 1 grabbed him around the arms and pinned him arms at his side with the 1 arms loose below the elbows Dean in this position flourished the gun or it wobbled all around and Mr Smith then took the gun away from Dean Dean was released and in the tussel Mr Mclver fell or was partially thrown forward and Dean then jump- ed ¬ on him and drove his thumbs Into his face that up to that time Dean had done him no bodily injury Mr McIver said if they had let him alone after getting the gun away from Dean he could have brought the officer down to the lockup without assis ¬ tance and without injury to himself Several other witnesses were ex ¬ amined M M Little Victor Martinot Marshal Cleveland and A E Owen all of whom practically gave the same evidence that Mr Mclver did Mr Tucker was sworn and pleaded- not guilty to the charge of disorderly conduct or fighting and stated that he was standing several feet away leaning against the post when Mr Smith asked Dean repeatedly for the gun That he did not interfere until after the gun had been secured when Mr Mclver fell forward on his face and Dean leaped upon him striking- and goughing him in the face when he pulled Dean off and probably did it in a rather rough manner as times were strenuous and action had to be taken at once j Dean was asked to take the stand i and be sworn but declined upon the advice of his council Mr Raymond I Bullock to make any defense so was not sworn I Mayor Nash then announced the fol ¬ lowing decisions Mr Mclver be dis ¬ charged Mr Tucker be discharged- and that Mr Dean be fined 100 or sixty days imprisonment Great ap- plause broke out in the audience and I I court was adjourned SPECIAL MEETING OF THE CITY COUNCIL I I There will be a special meeting of the city council at 9 oclock tomorrow morning for the purpose of taking up the matter of the police department- of the city A full attendance is urged I Dan G Pleasant assistant secretary I and agency and Officer Dean Mr Mclvers casewas heard first He made a statementafter pleading not guilty to thecharge of disorderly conduct or fight-ing Mr Mclver said Dean made theassault on him entirely uncalled foror unprovoked that he had his righthand on his gun when he cursed andstruck him Mclver and that at thesecond blow he drew the gun and held-it to his Mclvers face About thistime some one Mr Chas W Smithhe thought attracted Deans attention-and as Dean turned a little Mr Mclver1

grabbed him around the arms andpinned him arms at his side with the

1 arms loose below the elbows Deanin this position flourished the gun orit wobbled all around and Mr Smiththen took the gun away from DeanDean was released and in the tusselMr Mclver fell or was partiallythrown forward and Dean then jump-ed

on him and drove his thumbs Intohis face that up to that time Deanhad done him no bodily injury MrMcIver said if they had let him aloneafter getting the gun away from Deanhe could have brought the officerdown to the lockup without assis ¬

tance and without injury to himselfSeveral other witnesses were ex¬

amined M M Little Victor MartinotMarshal Cleveland and A E Owenall of whom practically gave the sameevidence that Mr Mclver did

Mr Tucker was sworn and pleaded-not guilty to the charge of disorderlyconduct or fighting and stated thathe was standing several feet awayleaning against the post when MrSmith asked Dean repeatedly for thegun That he did not interfere untilafter the gun had been secured whenMr Mclver fell forward on his faceand Dean leaped upon him striking-and goughing him in the face whenhe pulled Dean off and probably did itin a rather rough manner as timeswere strenuous and action had to betaken at once
