OBS JUNE SALE STARTS TUESDAY
by Jessica Martini
The Ocala Breeders= Sales Company=s June 2-Year-Olds in
Training and Horses of Racing Age Sale, the final major juvenile
sale of the season, gets underway Tuesday, with the first of 769
catalogued horses scheduled to go through the sales ring at
10:30 a.m.
The June auction has produced sale-record toppers the past
two years, with a colt by Candy Ride (Arg) bringing top price of
$680,000 in 2015 and a colt by City Zip selling for $800,000 in
2016. Those results, plus the exploits of recent graduates like
Grade I winners Celestine (Scat Daddy) and Haveyougoneaway
(Congrats), have helped bulk up the sale=s reputation.
AThe June sale has certainly evolved over the last number of
years,@ confirmed OBS Director of Sales Tod Wojciechowski. AIt
has grown into its own market. Before, it was maybe an
afterthought, but now it=s not just an afterthought to buyers and
sellers, it=s a good place to sell your horse.@
While the 2016 June sale featured a catalogue of 1,224 head
and was held over four days, there were 696 originally entered
into the 2017 June sale and that number increased to 769 with
supplemental entries. There are 755 2-year-olds and 12 older
horses cataloged and the auction will be just two days this year,
with sessions Tuesday and Wednesday. Cont. p4
COALITION LAUNCHES TO REPEAL SPORTSBETTING BAN by Ben Massam
In a move that could have a significant impact on the racingindustry and its position in the gambling market as a whole, theAmerican Sports Betting Coalition (ASBC) was launched Mondayin an effort to repeal the 25-year-old Professional and AmateurSports Protection Act (PASPA), which prohibits sports bettingoutside of Nevada. Spearheaded by the American GamingAssociation (AGA), which announced the launch of thecoalition=s website Monday, the group consists of lawenforcement personnel, state and local policymakers andgaming industry members. While the legalization of sportsbetting could have a positive impact for racetracks as analternative revenue stream, NTRA President and CEO AlexWaldrop noted that the industry must take a close look at theissue from a variety of angles.
AWe=re aware of it, and we have met with the American Gaming Association,@ Waldrop said on a Monday evening
phone call. Cont. p3

Coalition Launches to Repeal Sports Betting
Ban (cont. from p1)
Waldrop continued, AIt does appear that
their goal is a repeal of PASPA, which would
do nothing more than put it back to a state
level, where they would decide, much like
casino gambling. We have begun
conversations with our members about
their position on the repeal, which is not the
same as legalization of sports betting. It
simply opens the door for states to make
their own independent determination. Nor
does it preclude any group of racetracks
from being part of any authorizing
legislation at the state level.@
An ASBC mission statement, which
stresses the importance of deferring to
individual state governments, reads:
AFederal law prohibiting sports betting has
failed. Out of step with American attitudes,
it has created a massive illegal gambling market without any
rules or protections. It=s time to end the federal ban on sports
betting.@
Among the notable members of the coalition are Brad Schimel,
Attorney General of the state of Wisconsin; Mick Cornett, mayor
of Oklahoma City; and Ed Davis, a former Boston police
commissioner. With a heavy emphasis on
the empowerment of law enforcement, the
ASBC cites the need to curb illegal sports
wagering as a driving force behind the push
for legalized and regulated sports betting
with greater transparency for customers.
With Monmouth Park and the state of
New Jersey poised to move forward with an
attempt to nullify PASPA at a Supreme
Court level, a repeal of the ban that returns
the decision to the states would
undoubtedly be a welcome sign for the
track as it searches for an alternative
stream of revenue. Nevertheless, there are
concerns that the advent of new sports
betting facilities could have a negative
effect on racetracks competing for the
public=s wagers.
AThis is exactly what Monmouth needs, so from that
perspective, there are certainly going to be people in the
industry who are very supportive of it,@ Waldrop continued.

AI think there are going to be others who sit back and say, >How
will this effect us? Do we need to negotiate something in
return?= So we=re taking a look at it from a variety of
perspectives. We haven=t taken a position as the NTRA. We=re
going to be taking up the issue with our board at the next board
meeting. I don=t think this is imminent by any stretch.@
Waldrop added that the NTRA would likely reach a stance on
the issue at some point in the next six months after their
discussion period with members. While the formation of the
ASBC represents the largest initiative yet to repeal PASPA, the
coalition must still
find a way to
overcome
significant
opposition in
Congress, as well
as the prospect of
continued
resistance from
the sports
leagues--primarily
the NFL. Waldrop
said he believes
that the issue is coming to a head with the rise of daily fantasy
sports, which is widely supported by sports leagues.
AThe view of some is that there=s a level of hypocrisy on the
part of the sports leagues, who want to oppose sports gambling,
but they somehow are going to tolerate daily fantasy,@ Waldrop
observed. AIt seems inconsistent.@
Although it appears that the ultimate goal of the ASBC is to
enable brick and mortar sports betting operations at existing
casinos and racetracks, the NTRA=s stance on the matter could
take a drastically different turn should the possibility of online
sports betting enter the discussion. With horse racing essentially
having a monopoly on the market of legal, online pari-mutuel
wagering in the form of ADWs, the introduction of off-site sports
betting would likely conflict with the interests of the racing
industry, according to Waldrop.
AIf this was an online play, we as an industry, because of our
online wagering platforms--ADWs--would have to approach this
very differently,@ Waldrop concluded. AWe would have to be
much more reluctant and make greater demands.@
According to the AGA, the ASBC initiative will attempt to
educate Apolicymakers, law enforcement and all relevant
stakeholders@ about the impact of illegal sports betting in an
effort to bolster support for legalized wagering. The AGA
represents the U.S. casino industry, with its members including
Penn National Gaming Inc., Boyd Gaming Corporation and
Greenwood Racing Inc.--all of which operate racinos.
OBS June Sale Starts Tuesday (cont. from p1)
AIt=s a combination of factors,@ Wojciechowski said of the
shortened sale. AOur March sale was a little larger this year, so
some of those horses got absorbed into March. But I think it=s
the natural ebb and flow of the market.@
Despite the record sale topper a year ago, the June sale
registered declines in both average and median. During the
four-day sale, 619 juveniles grossed $17,930,900 for an average
of $28,968 and a median of $13,500.
The June sale will be the third juvenile sale of the year at OBS
and follows a record-setting April sale that produced strong
results from top to bottom.
AWe certainly hope [the June sale carries on from April=s
results],@ Wojciechowski said. AThere are still a lot of nice horses
on the grounds. Hopefully there are people out there still
looking for quality horses.@
OBS conducted a four-session under-tack preview of the June
sale last week and, while Wednesday=s first day was delayed
multiple times by rain, Wojciechowski called the week a success.
AWe were extremely pleased with the breeze show,@ he
commented. AThe weather certainly created some obstacles,
but we are well-prepared to handle it and our track took the
water exceptionally well. Everybody had a fair shake to show
their horses off. Probably in hindsight, the overcast cloudy days
have been kind on everyone weather-wise.@

ABEL TASMAN To say that making a stallion is very much a
numbers game is too simplistic, as the quality of
the mares covered can be far more relevant than
their quantity. That said, it can be very hard to
compete against the most in-demand stallions,
who enjoy the benefit of both quantity and quality. For example,
several relatively high-priced stallions featured among last
year=s busiest stallions, with Uncle Mo covering 253 mares, Into
Mischief 218, American Pharoah 208 and Kitten=s Joy 201.
It can be done, though. You have to go all the way down to
80th place on that 2016 list to find Quality Road, who covered
112 mares at a fee of $35,000 in his sixth year at Lane=s End.
This tall son of Elusive Quality now has four crops of racing age
and in those four years, his book fluctuated from 149 mares in
his first year to 91 in his second, then back up to 136 in his third
before dropping back down to 110 in his fourth. Consequently,
the number of foals in these early crops has never been higher
than 110 and has been as low as 68, with his current crop of 2-
year-olds numbering 78.

China Horse Club=s Teo Ah Khing (r) and Abel Tasman (Quality
Road) after her win in Saturday=s GI Acorn S. | Sarah K. Andrew
I am looking forward to watching his fifth-crop yearlings later
this year, as they come from one of his biggest crops, at around
115 foals. Also, they were conceived in 2015, soon after he had
taken the title of champion first-crop sire in 2014.
Despite his fluctuating popularity, Quality Road currently ranksas high as seventh by American earnings this year. He is doingespecially well with his 99-strong third crop, which has alreadyproduced the terrific total of six graded winners, plus the Grade II-placed Majestic Quality, the listed winner SashimiBlaster and the recent Plate Trial S. winner Guy Caballero. For the record, this crop=s six graded scorers are Abel Tasman(GI Starlet S., GI Kentucky Oaks and GI Acorn S.), >TDN RisingStar= Klimt (GII Best Pal S. and GI Del Mar Futurity), CowboyCulture (GIII Arlington Classic on turf), Guest Suite (GIII LecomteS.), Long Haul Bay (GIII Bay Shore S.) and Salty, the GII Gulfstream Park Oaks winner who pressed Abel Tasman hardin the Acorn S. before settling for second. This crop is already outperforming Quality Road=s fine firstcrop, with its four graded winners. He owed his very bright startto Hootenanny (GI Breeders= Cup Juvenile Turf) and the dualGrade II winner Blofeld, who respectively earned weights of 122and 119 on the Experimental Free Handicap. That first cropquickly showed that high-class two-year-olds were not all thatQuality Road has to offer. A second Grade I-winner emergedwhen the four-year-old Illuminant won the Gamely S. a yearago. Illuminant remains in good form this year, as she showed inwinning the GIII Monrovia S., and two other 5-year-olds whohave been flying the flag for Quality Road are the mare HighRidge Road (GII Barbara Fritchie S.) and Follow Me Crev(runner-up to Cupid in the GI Gold Cup at Santa Anita).

There was also a graded winner from Quality Road=s small
second crop, in the form of Frank Conversation, a Grade II
winner on turf in California. With Hootenanny also having
excelled on turf, it was tempting at that time to pigeon hole
Quality Road as a potential turf specialist, especially when his
sire Elusive Quality made his mark in Europe and Australia with
the likes of Raven=s Pass, Elusive Kate, Sepoy, Elusive City and
Certify.
However, Elusive Quality was versatile, as he showed by siring
Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner Smarty Jones and Quality
Road. The latter was another dirt specialist--a winner of the GI
Florida Derby, GI Donn H., GI Metropolitan H. and GI Woodward
S. who never ventured onto turf or all-weather during a 13-race
career. There is now enough evidence to show that Quality Road
has inherited Elusive Quality=s versatility as a sire, with his 11
graded winners dividing into seven dirt horses and four turf
performers, with each category featuring a pair of Grade I
winners.
It is hardly surprising that Abel Tasman belongs firmly among
the dirt contingent. Her broodmare sire Deputy Minister was
another dirt specialist, who spent his entire 22-race career on
the main track. Deputy Minister=s stallion career also centred
firmly on the dirt, yielding a pair of sires= championships, and his
legacy included a very successful stallion son in Awesome Again
and plenty of very effective broodmare daughters.
Deputy Minister=s finest achievements included those
outstanding distaffers Go For Wand and Open Mind, who jointly
won 22 of their 32 starts. Coincidentally, Open Mind--like Abel
Tasman--won the Kentucky Oaks and Acorn S, before going on
to win the GI CCA Oaks and GI Alabama S. The Alabama has
been mentioned as a likely target for Abel Tasman too. There
was also a famous Kentucky Oaks winner--the future Belmont S.
heroine Rags To Riches (A.P. Indy)--among the many other
Grade I winners with a dam by Deputy Minister.
One interesting aspect of Abel Tasman=s pedigree is that her
dam Vargas Girl was foaled when Deputy Minister was 24 years
old. In fact, Deputy Minister was still very active as a 25-year-old
in 2004, when he got more than 60 of his 71 mares in foal.
However, his career could certainly be used to add strength to
the argument that elderly stallions become less effective as they
become veterans.
Deputy Minister became champion sire at the ages of 18 and
19 in 1997 and =98, thanks largely to progeny conceived when
he was between the ages of 13 and 15. Altogether he sired 17
Grade I winners. As many of 14 of them were conceived when
he was 15 or younger. Only one of the 17--the Personal Ensign S.
winner Miss Shop--was conceived after Deputy Minister had
passed the age of 20 (he was 23). I tend to think that one
contributing factor was that he came into competition against
numerous popular stallion sons.
Miss Vargas=s career could have been used as evidence that
the veteran stallion wasn=t what he used to be. She raced eight
times over three years and never managed to reach the first
three, eventually retiring with the paltry earnings of $1,439.
Fortunately for Vargas Girl, she was out of Wheatly Way, a
stakes-winning mare with a fine record as a broodmare.
Wheatly Way=s Prospector=s Gamble colt Bevo had excelled as a
juvenile, winning the GII Saratoga Special and GI Futurity S., and
her Carson City filly Moonlight Sonata had won the
GIII Arlington-Washington Lassie S. Moonlight Sonata has since
added considerably to the family fortunes by producing the
Grade II winners Beethoven and Wilburn, to Sky Mesa and
Bernardini respectively.
Vargas Girl is also playing her part in boosting this family, as
Abel Tasman is her second graded winner, following Sky Girl
(Sky Mesa), winner of the GIII Dogwood S. over seven furlongs.

Kelly Breen | Horsephotos
KELLY BREEN: DETERMINATION TO PREVAIL
by Jessie Oswald
For the select group of trainers fortunate enough to win the
recently renewed GI Belmont S., a race of its magnitude offers
the unique opportunity to validate the life decisions that got
them there. That was the case for Kelly Breen six years ago
when his first Belmont S. entry, longshot Ruler On Ice (Roman
Ruler), won the race and elevated the trainer to the national
stage. ADug in with good determination to prevail,@ is a line from
the racing chart describing that Belmont win, but the same
might be said of Breen.
Breen, who experienced another strong spring after training
Miss Sky Warrior (First Samurai) through a five-race win streak
culminating in Aqueduct's Apr. 8 GII Gazelle S. before she was
caught in a speed duel, lost a shoe and faltered to an
eighth-place finish in the May 5 GI Kentucky Oaks, spent this
year=s Belmont day at his home base at Monmouth Park,
sending out a pair of entrants to second and third-place finishes.
Growing up in Old Bridge, NJ, 20 miles from Monmouth, Breen
is the youngest of four--his closest sibling eight years his elder.
His father labored in Manhattan's Steamfitters Local 638 to
support the family and relaxed by playing the ponies at local
tracks like Aqueduct, the Meadowlands and Monmouth Park.
Trips to the track with his father sparked a passion for racing in
the young Breen and a goal to make racing a career.
AI wanted to be a jockey,@ said Breen, 48. AWe went to the
racetrack and I thought I could do what these guys here are
doing.@
A petite and agile athlete in school, Breen excelled in soccer
and wrestling=s lightweight class. He knew he was the size to be
a jockey, he just lacked one thing--he=d never ridden a horse.
But Breen was determined to do whatever it would take. He
gave up sports and began riding lessons on hunter/jumpers at
Baymar Farms in nearby Morganville, mucking stalls in the
mornings before school to pay for lessons in the afternoon. Soon
Breen was riding racehorses for Ralph DeSantis, a Thoroughbred
trainer at a farm down the road.
By the time Breen could get a jockey=s license at age 16, he
had learned as much as he could with DeSantis and left for a job
at the racetrack, exercising horses for trainer Walter Reese. But
when Breen hit a growth spurt 18 months later and couldn=t
control his size, he realized that despite his hard work, he would
never be a jockey.
AWhen I got too big, it was heartbreaking,@ said Breen.
Trainer Scooter Dickey offered Breen a job as his assistant and
a chance to keep the dream of a career in horse racing alive. A
year later, Breen was with John Forbes, exercising horses and
assisting with the stable. Seeing the uncertainty of a sustainable
career in racing, Breen split his time over the next few years
between Forbes=s barn and the family business, steamfitting.
AWhatever he was going to do, he was going to do well in,@
said Dan Breen, Kelly=s older brother, who followed in their
father=s footsteps as a steamfitter. AEither becoming a jockey
and then all of a sudden becoming a trainer--or even with
steamfitting.@
Breen worked with his father and completed three years in a
five-year apprenticeship with the steamfitters union in New
York, becoming one of the top apprentices in his class. It was
also during this time that he won his first race as a trainer with
Contarito, a horse he claimed for owner Ricky Gallo. Into his
early 20s, it was time for Breen to make a decision about his
future.

Ruler on Ice wins the Belmont | Sarah K. Andrew
AThe winning keeps you going,@ said the competitive Breen.
AWhen I was doing construction with my dad and I worked in the
World Trade Center back in the >90s, it was kind of neat to put in
the air-conditioning unit, the sprinkler system, whatever it was
and when you were done you were like, >Hey, we built that.= But
it wasn't winning.@
Breen dove back into racing full-time and took an assistant
trainer's position with Ben Perkins, Sr. Over the next eight years
Breen learned the ropes from Perkins, who showed him not only
how to prepare the horses in the barn, but what to look for at
the sales and how to bring in new horses.
AWe really had a good rapport,@ said Breen. AHe=s the person
that really taught me the most and allowed me to observe the
most with some nice horses.@
With Perkins, Breen was involved in the development of many
stakes-winning horses like Appealing Skier (Baldski), who took
the pair to the Breeders= Cup twice in the mid >90s.
AI knew he learned the right way,@ said the now 84-year-old
Perkins. AI could tell the way Kelly was breezing the horses and
the type he was getting at the sales, he did terrific. He's still
doing good and he's going to keep doing good.@
When Perkins retired in 2000, it was an opportunity for Breen
to go back out on his own. By 2005, he had won the leading
trainer title at Monmouth Park and repeated the feat in 2006.
The same year, he got his first graded stakes win when Dean
DeRenzo and Randy Hartley=s Praying for Cash (Songandaprayer)
took Monmouth Park's GIII Long Branch Breeders' Cup S. Breen
was making a name for himself in New Jersey and people were
taking notice.
George Hall, a New York investment mogul and horse owner,
gave the up-and-coming trainer a shot. The duo found success
early on and campaigned stakes-winners like West Side Bernie
(Bernstein), Pants On Fire (Jump Start) and Bern Identity
(Bernstein), to name a few. But in 2011, Ruler On Ice took both
men to a new level, giving each his first Grade I win.
While a recording of Frank Sinatra's ANew York, New York,@ asong the Breen family grew up listening to, blasted over theBelmont grandstand, Breen was gathered with his wife and kids, father, brother, sisters, and in-laws to witness the validation foryears of hard work and determination he had put into hischosen career. In five weeks, Breen was able to take the talented yetimmature Ruler On Ice, who missed the Kentucky Derby becausehe lacked the earnings to qualify, from beaten favorite inPimlico's Federico Tesio S. to Grade I winner in Belmont Park'smost prestigious race. AProbably one of the best days of my life,@ Breen said with theemotion of the moment six years earlier still audible in his voice.AI don=t think I=ve had that much of my family at one race ever.@ Today, Breen may not have the name recognition of a ToddPletcher or Bob Baffert, but the kid from New Jersey hasbecome a regular player on the national stage, with more than600 career wins and earnings of over $28.7 million. Hecontinues to aim high and plot a path to achieving his goals, which include seeing success in his three children, taking hiswife of nearly 20 years golfing in Hawaii, and securing victory inanother Triple Crown race.
CORRECTION: The sire of Kentucky Derby winner Always
Dreaming was incorrectly indicated on page one of Monday=s

DOUGLAS ROAD (c, 3, The Factor--Board Battle, by Seeking the
Gold) took a sneaky amount of money first out to be 8-1 for
owner/trainer/breeder William Harrigan Apr. 21 at Keeneland
and ran third despite a wide draw behind Kitten=s Karma
(Kitten=s Joy), who came back to repeat Sunday at Churchill.
Privately purchased and switched to this leading local barn in
the interim, the bay was dispatched as a 2-1 favorite and led
through dawdling fractions of :25.01 and :50.57. Challenged by
Brookline (Tapit) approaching the quarter pole, the favorite
shook that foe off soon after and edged clear under mild urging
to a 1 1/2-length graduation. General Patton (War Front)
overhauled Brookline for second late. The winner=s dam foaled a
colt by Bodemeister last term before being bred to Fed Biz. Sales

AMIGO'S AFFAIR (g, 4, Senor Amigo--Mountain Affair {GSW,

debut Feb. 17 at Tampa and beat up on $50,000 maiden
claimers Apr. 14 at Keeneland before wiring an allowance group
sprinting on this oval May 23. Hammered to 1-2 favoritism in
this first route try, the bay stumbled coming out of the blocks,
but made the lead easily nevertheless, clicking off splits of
:24.60 and :49.12. Challenged by a pair of rivals nearing the top
of the lane and collared briefly in mid-stretch, the chalk battled
back to reassert command at the sixteenth pole and skip clear to
a 2 3/4-length success. What=s On Tap (Hansen) completed the
exacta. The winner is a half to Mountain Forum (Open Forum),

to be sixth in his hillside course unveiling May 13 and was let go

chestnut quickly made the point before being confronted by an
inside challenger past a :21.69 quarter. Edging clear of that foe
at the five-sixteenths pole, he kicked away strongly by the
furlong grounds and came home a comfortable 4 1/4-length

Hustled to the fore through a :22.54 quarter, the homebred was

Fourth Annual Jockeys and Jeans Event Brings Raised Funds to
Over $250,000:
With the totals in for the June 3 Jockeys and Jeans event at
Parx Racing, proceeds from it and an earlier Stallion Season Sale
total a record $252,000, it was announced Monday. This tops
the previous record of $235,000 raised by the group for the
Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund (PDJF) in 2016. Since its
inception in 2014, the all volunteer group, founded by five
former jockeys, has raised over $715,000. Some 300 visitors
were on hand to mingle with 14 Hall of Fame Jockeys, while six
catastrophically injured riders were honored.
AAll of this is simply a testimony to the concern and generosity
of the racing community and those who love this sport,@ said
Jockeys and Jeans President, Barry Pearl. ADonors, volunteers,
Hall of Fame riders and fans joined hands to honor and support
those men and women whose catastrophic injuries may have
disabled their bodies, but has not diminished their spirits. [We]
are truly humbled by the response.@

THE WEEKLY WRAP
by Emma Berry
In Newmarket, the baton-switch from late spring to early
summer has been completed with the movement of racing from
the stark openness of the Rowley Mile to the more bucolic
charms of its sun-dappled neighbour. Where better, then, to
take in what on paper appeared to be one of the smartest
maidens of the season to date?
Saturday's curtain-up at the July Course featured not only
siblings to Group 1 winners Arabian Queen (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire})
and Cursory Glance (Distorted Humor), but also a recent
expensive acquisition for Phoenix Thoroughbred Limited, the
$800,000 breeze-up filly Take Me With You (Scat Daddy), and
last year's Tattersalls October Book 1 co-topper Glorious
Journey (GB), a son of Dubawi and Philippa Cooper's homebred
G1 Coronation S. winner Fallen For You (GB) (Dansili {GB}).
Unleashing such a noteworthy colt as Glorious Journey brings
its own pressures and, coming at the end of a week which saw
the resignation of Sheikh Mohammed's right-hand man John
Ferguson, it was hugely important that the 2.6 million-guinea
purchase represented the Godolphin blue in a positive light. This
he did with aplomb, despite looking physically behind some of
his rivals in the paddock--a factor which should be to his benefit
as the season unfolds.

PRECIEUSE SOLD TO WHITE BIRCH FARMby Emma Berry
Precieuse (Ire) (Tamayuz {GB}), winner of the G1 Poule d'Essai
des Pouliches last month for her owner-breeders Brendan and
Anne Marie Hayes, has been sold to continue racing for Peter M.
Brant of White Birch Farm. The filly, who will continue to be
trained in Chantilly by Fabrice Chappet, is expected to be
supplemented for next Friday's G1 Coronation S. at Royal Ascot.
Brendan Hayes, who bred Precieuse at his Knocktoran Stud in
Ireland, commented, "We are very happy that she has gone to
Peter, who really loves his racing, and in the long term she will
be joining a high-class broodmare band and be offered the best
possible matings in her career as a broodmare. She remains in
training with Fabrice Chappet who has done a great job with
her."

Cooper, who returned last year to the sales ring
after a lengthy absence, plans to retain Glorious
Journey's yearling half-brother by Frankel (GB),
but will again be offering a batch of her
Normandie Stud yearlings this autumn through Norris
Bloodstock, including two close relations to Glorious Journey,
both from the first crop of
Kingman (GB).
She said, "I didn't go to watch
him on Saturday--it's probably
best for breeders to stay out of
the way once they have sold a
horse--but it was very exciting
to watch on television. I've
never even had a runner over
six furlongs. It was a huge ask
for him so it was a thrill to see
him win. As a young horse we
never really knew he was there
because we never had a single
problem with him."
Charlie Appleby will be
hoping for similarly plain
sailing as Glorious Journey continues on a racing quest that will
almost certainly see him boosted to Pattern company for his
next outing.
"He showed us signs early on that he had ability but about
eight weeks ago he went a little backwards on us," noted the
trainer. "We backed off him and in the last few weeks he's come
back to us and I decided it was time to allow him to go out there
and do it on the track. He's still maybe a bit weak behind and
through his neck and we'll wait to see how he goes in the next
few weeks before we decide whether or not he will come back
here for the July meeting."
As Appleby may well have expected, he was quizzed about
Godolphin's turbulent week, replying with his usual politeness
that he is employed by the operation to train horses rather than
to comment on personnel changes. Initially thrust into the
spotlight on the back of the Mahmood Al Zarooni doping
episode, Appleby, who has spent much of his working life with
Godolphin, has never shied away from speaking openly to the
press from the day he took on what is on one hand a golden
opportunity to train a large number of well-credentialed
thoroughbreds, and on the
other a role that is under
constant external scrutiny.
The trainer's likeable
level-headedness has no doubt
helped him to continue to
focus on the positive, and for
him that has clearly always
been the horses in his care. At
a time when plenty are
wondering what happens next
for Godolphin, Appleby can
take deserved pride in the fact
that his stable boasts a 30%
strike-rate leading into one of
the most important weeks of
the racing year in Britain.
Glorious Journey's opening-race triumph on Saturday was
swiftly augmented by wins for another two of his Dubawi colts,
the juvenile Folk Tale (Ire) and Culturati (GB), who returned
from a lengthy absence to force himself into the reckoning for
the Wokingham H. at Royal Ascot. Of course it is the big races
that matter most, so perhaps another son of Dubawi, the
well-related Frontiersman (GB), can add to Appleby's
group-race haul before too long, and maybe as soon as next
week in the G2 Hardwicke S.

William Butler & Sir Mark Prescott | Emma Berry
The Butler Did It... Sir Mark Prescott taking to tweeting is about as unlikely as
Theresa May remaining ensconced in Number 10 until Christmas
but, just as the world of politics has continued to astound us for
the last 12 months, there appeared on Twitter recently the
handle @HeathHouseNkt. Don't be fooled, however. While the
loquacious baronet can still be relied upon to recount a stream
of side-splitting anecdotes from his vantage point on Warren Hill
before most of us have even had breakfast, it is his long-time
assistant William Butler who is the driving force behind the
stable's recent embracing of social media.
Butler spent last week overseeing a rare runner for the stable
in America, where St Michel (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) was a
fast-finishing second to the Andreas Wohler-trained Red
Cardinal (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}) in what was a
European-dominated GIII Belmont Gold Cup. The first four home
represented Germany, Britain, France and Ireland, with the
winner and runner-up now likely to head even farther afield to
Australia for the G1 Melbourne Cup in November.
"He was grand after the race and hasn't missed a beat,"
reported Butler of the 4-year-old St Michel. "The trip to Belmont
was very much a recce to see if he's the type of horse to take to
Melbourne. Jeremy Noseda was very kind and gave us plenty of
help with the arrangements for Belmont and I imagine we may
well be calling on Luca Cumani as we start to plan for Australia."
As lovingly as Prescott has preserved the historical aspect of
Heath House, with commemorative plaques to all 12 previous
trainers lining the wall of the entrance, the meticulous planner
naturally has an eye on his stable's future. For 18 years now,
Butler has been first pupil assistant and then assistant trainer
and has been well groomed to take the reins at the central
Newmarket yard.

The Weekly Wrap Cont.
When that handover will be only Prescott knows, but loyalty is
a quality the trainer values as highly as punctuality and in Butler
he has found a worthy successor whose tenure at Heath House
is outranked in longevity only by the semi-retired Colin Nutter,
Prescott's former head lad of 46 years' service.
A recent TDN visit to the yard underlined the great store
Prescott sets by his staff's allegiance and ability to follow orders.
He warned, "If I said to Colin, 'Mrs. Berry is arriving at 6.15, take
her into box 20 and shoot her', you'd be dead by 6.18 and at
lunchtime he'd ask me what I'd like him to do with the body."
Point taken.
Pearce Legacy To Continue... St Michel's owner-breeder John Pearce died in January at the
age of 98, but his blue and white racing silks will still be seen on
the racecourse for seasons to come thanks to the endeavours of
his great nephew Edmund Bush and advisors Rupert Bentley and
William Huntingdon. The trio will oversee John Pearce Racing
and Breeding, maintaining four mares and their followers at
Lanwades Stud and around 10 horses in training.
"We will carry on with John's aim to breed mile-and-a-half
horses," said his longstanding friend Huntingdon, who, along
with Geoffrey Brooke, Doug Smith and Geoff Wragg, previously
trained for Pearce.
Though never succeeding in his desire to race a Derby winner,
Pearce came agonisingly close with Dragon Dancer (GB) (Sadler's
Wells), who was beaten just a short-head at Epsom by Sir Percy
(GB) (Mark Of Esteem {Ire}) in 2006.
His racing colours have long been synonymous with good
stayers, not least the Ascot Gold Cup winner Arcadian Heights
(GB) (Shirley Heights {GB}), so a crack at one of the world's most
famous staying races on the other side of the world with St
Michel would be a fitting way to usher in a new era for an
owner-breeder operation which is happily continuing for the
foreseeable future.
No Silencing Dabirsim... Dabirism (Fr) (Hat Trick {Jpn}) romped through his juvenile
season in 2011 unbeaten, making a name for his young trainer
Christophe Ferland when closing out the year with back-to-back
Group 1 strikes in the Prix Morny and Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere.
Standing his first two seasons at stud at Gestut Karlshof, he was
Germany's busiest stallion on his retirement in 2009 and
maintained a three-figure book the following year before being
returned to the country where he was trained. For the last two
seasons he has been based in Normandy at Haras de
Grandcamp.
His runaway early success as a racehorse is currently being
emulated in his fledgling stallion career, with five of his first
seven runners being winners, including Cead Mile Failte (Fr),
who has won both his starts for owner Theresa Marnane and
trainer Matthieu Palussiere. It's a furious strike-rate to maintain
but, judging from some of Dabirsim's yearlings at last year's
sales, they won't all be early types, so it's reasonable to hope we
will start to see some progressive representatives emerging as
the season continues.
The French breeding community has flirted with sons of
Sunday Silence in the past, but none broke through to any
meaningful degree despite the fact that Divine Light (Jpn)
provided Stefan Friborg with the 1000 Guineas heroine
Natagora (Fr) before being shipped off to Turkey. Sunday
Silence's grandson Dabirsim gives a glimmer of hope that the
sireline can at last take root in Europe.
The Weekly Wrap will return after Royal Ascot.
Precieuse Sold to White Birch Farm Cont. from p1
Brant, who bred and raced Gulch (Mr. Prospector) and was
also the owner of the outstanding Tryptich (Riverman) in the
latter stages of her racing career, made a significant splash at
Goffs last year when buying a number of horses from the
Wildenstein Stables Dispersal. More than i1 million was spent
during the Orby Sale on a Dansili (GB) yearling filly and three
horses in training bought in the name of White Birch Farm.

Precieuse Sold to White Birch Farm Cont. from p1
One of two in-training purchases through Northshore
Bloodstock, Parauari (Fr) (Lawman {Fr}), provided White Birch
Farm with a win last week when sent to Dieppe by Alain de
Royer Dupre. The spending continued at the November Sale, at
which 15 broodmare and foal purchases included Classic winner
Beauty Parlour (GB) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) at i1.6 million and
Amerique (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) for i975,000.
Precieuse is the second high-profile purchase in recent weeks
by Brant, who is now the co-owner of G3 Prix Penelope winner
Sistercharlie (Fr) (Myboycharlie {Ire}). The Henri-Alex Pantall-
trained filly is an intended runner in Sunday's G1 Prix de Diane
Longines.
TERRAKOVA EYES DIANE Freddy Head has high hopes for Terrakova (Ire) (Galileo {Ire})
in Sunday's G1 Prix de Diane at Chantilly. The >TDN Rising Star= is
one of the best bred horses in training being by champion sire
Galileo and out of Head's great race mare Goldikova (Ire)
(Anabaa), a three-time winner at the Breeders' Cup among
many other Grade/Group 1 successes. So far Terrakova is living
up to her pedigree, winning a maiden on her only start at two
before overcoming trouble in the running to win the G3 Prix
Cleopatre on her return at Saint-Cloud. Head has always had this
race in mind for his unbeaten filly, but feels she will stay further
later in the campaign.
"I think she is very good," said Head. "She's got a good cruising
speed but also she can quicken. I know the family well, they are
not too precocious, so I didn't want to over-face her last season.
For the moment 10 furlongs is her trip, but she finished off her
last race very strongly and I'm confident she'll stay a mile and a
half.@
AShe didn't have the clearest of runs that day, but she found
another gear, she's smart,@ he continued. AI've also left another
filly in, Listen In (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}), but I'm not sure she'll
run. I just want to see who else is running first."
Terrakova is one of 24 fillies still in the mix for the Group 1
heat, which is also known as the French Oaks. John Gosden's
unbeaten >Rising Star= Shutter Speed (GB) (Dansili {GB}), winner
of the G3 Musidora S. at York last month, is one of just two
British-trained possibles at this stage along with Charlie
Appleby's fellow >Rising Star= Sobetsu (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}), who
won the G1 The Gurkha Coolmore Prix Saint-Alary in France last
month, but disappointed in the G1 Oaks at Epsom.
Aidan O'Brien has left in his G1 1000 Guineas and Oaks
runner-up and G1 Fillies= Mile heroine Rhododendron (Ire)
(Galileo {Ire}), >Rising Star= Roly Poly (War Front) and
Pocketfullofdreams (Fr) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) while Andre
Fabre could run G3 Prix de Royaumont victress Kitesurf (GB)
(Dubawi {Ire}).
>ROY= IN FINE FORM FOR ROYAL ASCOTGodolphin=s Barney Roy (GB) (Excelebration {Ire}) breezed
seven furlongs in company with Britannia S. bound Son Of The
Stars (GB) (Delegator {GB}) over Kempton=s Polytrack Monday
morning in advance of Royal Ascot, Racing Post reported. One of
Godolphin=s main hopes for the Royal Meeting June 20-24, the
G3 Greenham S. hero was only a length behind Churchill (Ire)
(Galileo {Ire}) in the G1 2000 Guineas at Newmarket in early
May.

>Roy= in Fine Form for Royal Ascot Cont.
ABarney Roy went to Kempton this morning with Son Of The
Stars and had a nice breeze over seven furlongs around the
right-handed bend,@ trainer Richard Hannon told Racing Post.
AJames Doyle rode and was delighted with him. I think he=ll go
very well next week [in the G1 St. James=s Palace S. June 20].
The track will suit him and I=ve been very pleased with him since
Newmarket. We might have been tempted by the Derby, but I=m
really pleased that we kept him fresh for this.@
Added Hannon, ASon Of The Stars goes for the Britannia [June
22]. Kieran O=Neill rode him and he went well too.@
GOLDREAM ON SONG FOR KING=S STAND Robert Cowell reports Goldream (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) be
to be in tip-top form ahead of his bid to regain his sprinting
crown in the G1 King's Stand S. at Royal Ascot on June 20. The
son of Oasis Dream lifted the five-furlong feature on his
favoured fast ground in 2015, but missed the race 12 months
ago. The 8-year-old has shown he is still laden with ability with
two fine runs in May. Third to G1 Prix de l'Abbaye heroine
Marsha (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}) on his return in the G3 Palace
House S. at Newmarket May 6, he subsequently finished second
to Priceless (GB) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}) in the G2 Temple S. at
Haydock despite being uncharacteristically slowly away last out
May 27.
"He's ready and in absolutely brilliant form,@ said Cowell. AI
don't think I've had him better. He looks perfect and it's all
systems go for the King's Stand."
WELD PATIENT WITH >AMORE= Expensive purchase Tocco D'Amore (Ire) (Raven=s Pass) will try
to build on her debut success in a few weeks' time. Trainer
Dermot Weld's objective is to get black-type for the Moyglare
Stud-owned >TDN Rising Star=, who cost €2 million at Goffs Orby
Yearling Sale in September 2015. She made a belated
racecourse bow at Naas in April, when hacking up by six lengths
in a 10-furlong maiden.
"Tocco D'Amore is fine and we could look for something with
her in a few weeks,@ commented Weld. AThe main aim with her
would be to get some black-type. She loves a good dig in the
ground, and we were thinking of a campaign later in the year as
she is a slow-maturing filly. We didn't think the weather would
be so unsettled and the ground would be like it is at the
moment."
BHA APPOINTS NEW DISCIPLINARY PANEL A total of 23 people have been appointed to the new
Disciplinary Panel and Licensing Committee for the British
Horseracing Authority, His Honour Brian Barker C.B.E. QC,
Judicial Panel Chairman for the BHA announced Monday. The
panel will be in charge of holding enquiries under the Rules of
Racing, hearing appeals against the BHA=s racecourse stewards=
decisions and, where appropriate, imposing penalties in
accordance with the Rules. The new panel was appointed
following the recommendation of independent regulatory
expert Christopher Quinlanc QC, who reviewed the structure,
composition and operation of the BHA=s Disciplinary Panel,
Appeal Board and Licensing Committee. The appointed
chairman and members will start on July 3 (unless stated
otherwise) and will serve for three years. Cont. p7

BHA Appoints New Disciplinary Panel Cont.
AThe appointment process for these important positions has
been an extensive one,@ said Barker. AI=d like to thank everyone
for taking the time and effort to apply and we were very
fortunate to have such a high number of quality applications. I=m
pleased that we have been able to put in place a panel which
combines greater diversity of skills and experience, combining
significant legal expertise with in-depth horseracing knowledge.@
Appointed by the Judicial Panel Chairmen following an open,
competitive process, judged against published criteria, an
emphasis was placed on former jockeys and trainers whose
direct experience of the sport could make them ideal candidates
to assist in the formulation of disciplinary verdicts. Among the
new members on the panel are Grand National and Cheltenham
Gold Cup-winning trainer Jenny Pitman OBE and former jockey
Philip Robinson, who rode over 30 Group 1 winners
internationally. For a full list of the new panel members, click

AImplementing in full the recommendations from the recent
Integrity and Quinlan reviews remains a core priority for the
BHA this year, and the appointment of this august and talented
panel brings us another step closer to that objective,@ added a
pleased Nick Rust, Chief Executive of the BHA. AWe aim for the
BHA to be at the forefront of sporting regulation best practice
and the appointment of this panel reflects a further step in this
direction.@

Normandel backed up an Aug. 19 debut score at Clairefontaine
with a second in Chantilly=s Sept. 8 G3 Prix d=Aumale, but was off
the board in the G1 Prix Marcel Boussac back there Oct. 2 and
again in Maisons-Laffitte=s G3 Prix Imprudence on seasonal bow
Apr. 10, and lined up for this task coming off a May 10
conditions fifth back at Chantilly once more May 10. Stalking a
sedate pace in second until inching closer on the home turn, she
was sent wide at the top of the straight and kept on well under
mild urging in the closing stages to assert superiority for a career
high. AWe thought she had good quality after her win at
Clairefontaine last year, but we hadn=t really figured out the
best way to ride her,@ revealed trainer Pia Brandt. AAfter today=s
race, I think we now know what to do with her. Like her [half-]
brother [and former stablemate] Mont Ormel, she won on
debut at Clairefontaine and he also won on this card [in the
Listed Prix Ridgway] last year. We=ll follow a similar pattern and
now go for a 12-furlong race and, for her, it will be the [July 2
G2] Prix de Malleret [at Saint-Cloud].@
Normandel is a half-sister to last year=s G1 Juddmonte Grand

SHE WILL REIGN RETURNS TO TRACKWORK She Will Reign (Aus) (Manhattan Rain {Aus}), winner of the
2017 G1 Golden Slipper S., returned to the Warwick Farm track
Saturday morning (video), according to Racing and Sports.
Trainer Gary Portelli was pleased with his filly=s development.
AShe has come back a lot stronger and we=re excited to see her
back in the camp,@ Portelli told Racing And Sports. AShe was
pretty excited to be back at trackwork too. She was straight back
into her normal stable routine. Our foreman said she went out
looking like a young girl and has come back looking like a young
woman. She has an older looking head on her, is stronger
through the shoulder and neck and has thighs on her like you
wouldn=t believe. He has a massive hindquarter.@
Portelli is contemplating several options for his G2 Tab Silver
Slipper S.-winning filly, with a long-term goal gaining a spot in
the A$10-million Everest at Randwick in October.

Turtle Bowl Dead in Japan Cont.
In the frame in an additional three group stakes during his
racing days, Turtle Bowl retired to Haras de Montaigu in France
for the 2009 season, having accumulated $732,524 and sporting
a record of 21-7-6-3.
At stud, Turtle Bowl=s first crop was an immediate success,
despite standing for only €5,000, with the aforementioned 2012
G1 Poule d=Essai des Poulains hero Lucayan and French Fifteen
(Fr), the 2012 French sophomore highweight at seven to nine
furlongs, who landed the G1 Criterium International and was
runner up in the G1 QIPCO 2000 Guineas across the Channel.
Purchased by Shadai Stallion Station in November of that year,
Turtle Bowl=s oldest Japanese runners are currently 3-year-olds.
He is credited with a champion in Austria and five black-type
winners to date.
