In depth studies about
loneliness and isolation
Covers all aspects
Are we getting lonelier?
Statistics
not everyone is equally sensitive to feeling lonely, as we have different needs
and expectations of our relationships with others
some of us are contented with a small network of close friends, while others
are only satisfied with a vast social circle that gives them many opportunities
to be with others
although evolution suggests that were designed to live in close communities
and sociology teaches us that we thrive in close co-operation with each other,
our modern way of life isolates us from others

The Loneliest Job In Medway is a photographic project that explores loneliness and isolation that one may
feel while at work. Different people are suited to different types of jobs due to the different roles and
responsibilities that come with them. While some people may work in large groups and teams, others work
alone. Having worked for 5 years as a cleaner, I have experienced these feelings of isolation while in the
work place, and this is where the project idea originally started. My plan for this project was to visit differentpeople who work in jobs that I consider to be isolating, and photograph them in their work environment.
One of the most influential photographers I researched was George Tames. His photograph of President John
F Kennedy, titled The Loneliest Job was especially influential towards this project idea. While an
assumption can be made that the president is constantly surrounded by other members of the White House,
George Tames photograph shows a very different side to the job. Clever use of composition and lighting has
helped to emphasize this feeling loneliness and isolation. I photographed the people I visited alone, with no
one else within the space of the frame to communicate the lack of human interaction they may experience
on a daily basis. In most of the photographs I left a lot of empty space, with the worker standing in the
middle of the frame. This empty space is being used to represent the distance between the worker and
other humans. I wanted to visit a range of different people who work different types of isolated jobs so I
started searching for people at an early stage during the project. This allowed me to document a variety of
different careers and choose the one that I would consider to be the most isolating. The most challenging
part of this project was picking the single image that I believe represented The Loneliest Job In Medway. Ihave learnt that there is no single job that could be called The Loneliest as this is based on opinion, so I
have included three different workers as part of my final submission.

The Loneliest Job In Medway is a photographic project that explores loneliness and isolation that one may
feel while at work. The Body and The Object are two separate projects however I have decided to combine
the two and use the same title and concept. I was particularly inspired and influenced by the work of Alec
Soth, and the strong use of metaphoric and symbolic language throughout his photography. While it was
specifically this work that influenced my decision to allow both units to have the same concept, it was thework of Todd Hido that influenced my final image for the object unit. I felt that the warm, natural and
atmospheric lighting used in the series Occupied Homes communicated emptiness and isolation. I aimed to
replicate this specific type of lighting in the studio environment for my final image. I wanted to recreate a
pub/caf/bar environment for my final shoot, using a small glass as the object. I wanted this glass to be
alone and small within the frame, indicating that someone had previously been drinking from it. I wanted
the glass to be alone and to stand as a metaphor for the Loneliest Job In Medway. I kept the glass small
within the frame, with lots of empty space to represent the separation between the lonely worker and other
people. I photographed the glass in the corner of the room to represent the isolation of the worker, which
this image is being used to symbolize. I made a plan of the shoot in detail previous to the day that I was
going to take the image so that I had a good idea of how things were going to work. I had obtained the
materials and objects that I required for the set build. My aim was to make the image look as though it was
shot in a natural environment, not in a studio, so my biggest challenge was to replicate a scene which you
may find in a local bar, caf or pub, which I feel I did to the best of my ability.
