Term 3 Week 10, September 27, 2019

Introducing Maegan Weatherstone, a Year 7 student who thinks snow is the best thing about Oberon.

Art is Maegan’s favourite subject because she can be creative without anyone judging her. She thinks there are lots of great teachers here and doesn’t have a favourite. The supportive staff and students are what Maegan thinks is the best thing about OHS.

Maegan is proud of receiving an Education Week award but she is more proud of managing to get out of bed at 7:30am on a weekend. Mostly food motivates Maegan and like many of us chocolate is her favourite.

Reading, spending time with friends and drawing (in fact many artistic pursuits) occupy Maegan outside of school.

Maegan would most like to be an artist and sees herself at university studying Art in 10 years’ time. With such a creative personality this is very likely where she will be.

Term 3 Week 10, September 27, 2019 - Page 2

The Year 12 assembly was held on the last day of Term 3. It was a fantastic way to farewell our Year 12 students as they have completed their time with us and now venture into the post-school world. The assembly as usual was filled with excitement as they realised a 13 year journey was over, however, this was tempered with sadness as they also realised a significant part of their life was about to change forever.

At the assembly there were a mixture of speeches offering best wishes and thank-yous and a presentation to each student of their final portfolio. Year 12 left the assembly for photographs and then reassembled in the gym with family, friends and staff for morning tea.

The day had started with a BBQ hosted by Year 11 followed by a gathering of Year 12 and staff for the annual presentation of ‘funny’ awards which really highlighted the tight bond between students and staff.

Year 12 this year followed in the footsteps of last year’s group and made the final week a positive and happy experience. Dressing up and having a “Malcom Monday” along with Aussie Icon day (Tuesday) was entertainong for all students and made for a great week.

The security of the school is paramount to us as the facilities are used every day by staff and students but also accessed at times legitimately by community. It is important that if you see anything unusual or obviously wrong with our site that you contact someone to make them aware. If it is something that is putting our school at immediate risk of significant harm please ring 000. If it is alarms sounding or simply unusual behaviour in or around the school please ring school security on 1300 880 021.

The school is very open to our surroundings and as such is easily accessible to intruders who do not always care for our school as the rest of the community. The school has been scoped out for a security fence which will take in the entire school perimeter. This is part of a program across the state to secure all schools. It is provided to keep our grounds safe outside school time as well as enable us to secure the school during the day if need be, keeping students and staff safe. This will, in the long run, change some of the entry and exit pathways, however, changes will be communicated to everyone once the scoping and preliminary planning is compete.

Term 4 started this week and will finish on December 18th whilst staff have staff development days after that. Term 4 is a big term with Presentation Night to celebrate our current school year and a roll over mid-term to start our new school calendar. Week 6 is our roll over week (Starting November 18th), however, the process of roll over commences the week before with transition activities. Year 6 commence their own transition this term culminating in a 5 day visit in Week 7 (Starting November 25th).

Mr Jones is taking up a temporary position at Katoomba High School for Term 4 which means that Ms Marshall is Relieving as Head Teacher. Ms Ebony Fenton who has just completed a 5 week Pre-Service placement with our school will spend Term 4 in the Mathematics faculty as the extra person needed to complete the team.

Tuesday September 10 marked the start of the Year 6 to Year 7 transition process with an information evening for parents. It was pleasing to see a large number of parents and students attend the session where they met the 2020 Year 7 advisor Ms Kimberley Hill. Ms Hill spoke about the role of the year advisor and the up-coming transition process. The next part of the transition process occurs in Week 3 Term 4 when students attend Oberon high for the morning session. They attend again in Week 5 for the recess to lunch session and the transition culminates with a full week at

Oberon High School in Week 7 Term 4.

The transition program ensures students and their parents are well supported and informed as they take this exciting major step in their education.

Early in September HSC students took the first step of final HSC marking when external markers came to Oberon High School to examine their major works for subjects containing a practical element.

Drama students saw the culmination of their hard work as the external markers watched and

assessed final performances. Students performed both group and individual works and some chose to do costume design as an alternative to

performing. All students can be proud of their efforts and breathe a sigh of relief as 60% of their HSC mark for Drama is now finished. The remainder of the final mark comes from the theoretical exam which is late October.

On Wednesday September 4 Industrial Technology students presented their major works to external markers. This year Oberon High School had students in both Timber and Graphics strands of Industrial Technology. As with Drama, Industrial Technology students have now completed 60% of their final assessment with their exam in late October making up the rest of their mark for this subject. This years’ group had some interesting design concepts as well as many pieces with practical uses.

Some of the Timber majors works are pictured on the next page.

They explained what these represented and introduced the technique of playing and meaning of the sounds made by the digeridoo.

It was great to see everyone involved in the different activities including dances and Aboriginal face painting. Students and staff were treated to a special BBQ lunch with emu, kangaroo and camel sausages.

NAIDOC Week CelebrationsAs Nadioc Week was 7-14 July, which was in the last school holidays, OHS chose to have their NAIDOC celebrations on Wednesday September 25. This year’s NAIDOC theme “Voice. Treaty. Truth. Let’s work together for a shared future.” acknowledges that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have always wanted an enhanced role in decision-making in Australia’s democracy.

Special guests from Koomurri Aboriginal Incursions spoke about the significance of traditional body paints and the meaning of the different colours and designs. They demonstrated traditional songs and dances and had students and staff join in.

The week 9 & 10 focus was “Respectful – I will be respectful by listening quietly while teachers are giving instructions, I will follow these instructions and I will use my calm voice when talking to staff.”

Week 10 winners were Brooke Stanton, Liam Casey and Peta McGrath.

Benny the Bull was very excited about the Big Term 3 Major prizes of $20 Target gift cards, there were two for each house. These were won by Holly Robinson, Peta McGrath, Caelan Levanic, Michael Mijovic, Jade Taggart and Shania McDonald.

Students are consistently being rewarded for their respectful, responsible, safe and resilient behaviour by receiving Benny’s Bucks. They then put their name and house on the Benny’s Buck. Every two weeks a name is drawn from the Benny’s Bucks for each house and they receive a $5 canteen voucher.

The week 5 & 6 focus was “Right To Be Safe; safely behaving in the playground at recess and lunch.” and the winners were Eliza Jennison, Erica McKee, Jade Taggart (Pictured below left to right).

Staff Focus

Mrs Cheryl Fitzpatrick has been teaching at Oberon High School since 1985, we won’t say how long that is but you can do the math (it’s big math so maybe a calculator). In that time she has found the best thing about OHS is the great staff and how friendly the kids are.

When asked “why are you still teaching?” Mrs Fitz said “I still enjoy it. It’s lovely when they come back to visit and you see where they are;

whether it is where they wanted to go when they were at school or if they have gone another path that makes them happy.”

Teaching has covered many areas for Mrs Fitz including English, Drama and even a stint in the Library but she most enjoys her current position as Careers Advisor. She thinks its lovely to work one on one with students; “the kids see you as useful and you don’t have to pass or fail them. It’s great to see them get where they want in life.”

Outside of school Mrs Fitz spends her time with family and “Wreaking havoc in the garden”.

An interesting fact about Mrs Fitz – she is now teaching grandchildren of people she taught in the past.

In 5 years Mrs Fitz would like to be still here and not dead yet, and we all agree we would like to see her “still” here too.

Each Wednesday from Week 3 to Week 7 this term a small group of girls took part in a “Worth, Strength and Purpose Program”. The aim of this Well Being program run by the School Chaplain, Mrs Todd, was to build resilience, a sense of identity and increase the girls’ feeling self-worth.

This platform provided a safe, confidential and supportive environment for the girls to seek answers on how to deal with the everyday

pressures of being a teenager and becoming a strong resilient woman.

The interactive activities, worksheets and videos taught the girls valuable skills including self-care and learning positive self-talk. One highlight was being treated to a self-pampering hand scrub and beauty treatment. The program finished with the girls sharing some healthy snacks and special treats.

On Wednesday 28th August students were lucky enough to have Spoken Word Poet, Manal Younus, attend Oberon High School to deliver her performance “Nomad.” She was well received as she delivered inspirational poems to all students in Year 7-10. They watched with interest as Manal spoke about her poems and her style of poetry.

Selected students then took part in a workshop that enabled them to write their own words. They participated in a series of group activities to sharpen their imagination and get them motivated. Manal then worked with the students as they produced their own piece of poetry and presented it to the group.

A New Look at Poetry

Poem written at the workshop by Erica McKee

All I see is a black and white figure

That I once held and fed in my arms

Is now a prancing, burrowing digging up the field

Is now an uncle to seven little terrors just like himself.

If you are not sure what I am talking about,

I am talking about my pig Kevin.
