T H E PA S S I O N P L AY

In 1633, when the small Bavarian village ofOberammergau was in the grip of the plague, itsinhabitants vowed that if they were spared, theywould in future perform every ten years a PassionPlay depicting Christ’s bitter suffering.

In 1634 the villagers fulfilled their solemn promisefor the first time, and for hundreds of years sincethen, despite dangers and threats, they haveloyally kept their vow. Pilgrims from all over theworld are captivated by the Play, which is not onlya testimony of religious faith but also anoutstanding cultural event.

Although the text and music have been adaptedmany times over the years, the traditional concepthas remained intact. With inner conviction theamateur actors, all local people, represent timeand again the life and sufferings of Our Lord.

The last major changes to the text of the PassionPlay were made between 1850 and 1860 by theparish priest of Oberammergau, AloisDaisenberger, building on the work of FatherOthmar Weis. The structure of the Play, with itsliving pictures from the Old Testament and actedscenes from the New Testament, has beenretained to this day.

The music for the Play was composed in the early19th century by the Oberammergau schoolteacher, Rochus Dedler. Revised and extended in1950 by Professor Eugen Papst, it employs a largechoir and orchestra and frames the entirespectacle.

The Play shows the story of Christ’s Passion,beginning with the entry into Jerusalem andending with the Resurrection and Transfiguration.The performances are usually during theafternoon and evening with a break for dinner.Lunch arrangements and bus transport around thevillage are included in the package, making thewhole day a relaxing, as well us an uplifting,experience.

The world-famous Passion Play in Oberammergau, traditionally held every ten years, is due to beperformed again throughout the summer of 2020.

We have a long experience of the complexprocedures for obtaining Oberammergau"Arrangements" – Passion Play tickets combinedwith local accommodation. We can therefore offera first class, reliable service for Oberammergautours.

At the time of printing this brochure we expect the2020 season to last from late May to lateSeptember, with 4 or 5 performances of the playper week. Once again we expect midweekperformances to take place on Mondays,Wednesdays and Fridays, and we recommendthese because they are combined with a 2 nightstay in the village.

Accommodation in and around Oberammergau isavailable in various categories, but demand for thefew hotels is always high. In past years we haveoften used comfortable accommodation in privatehouses. For most tours we would expect to do soagain in 2020.

The fact that this procedure divides the group intoseveral smaller parties for 2 nights has never beena problem in the past. Indeed, many peopleparticularly enjoy the experience of staying withlocal families in this way.

The suggested itineraries featured here areexamples of Oberammergau tours, which havebeen popular in the past, or they are based ontried and tested tours, which we have operated tothese regions in recent years.

All these would follow a visit to Oberammergau.Tours to other second centres, multi-centreitineraries, and longer or shorter versions of thetours featured here, are all available on request.

Worldwide Christian Travel was founded in 1967, and 2020 will be our sixth Oberammergau season.It follows the very successful tour programmes, which we operated, to the Passion Play in 1980, 1984,1990, 2000 and 2010.

Day 6 At leisure. A day to relax and enjoy your hotel andsurroundings.

Day 7 Three Lakes Excursion. Enjoy a full day excursion aroundMondsee, Attersee and Wolfgangsee. Breathe in theAlpine air and why not sit lakeside to enjoy a strudel?

Day 8 Travel back to France. Depart for the homeward journeywith overnight stop en-route in France.

Day 9 Journey back home. Continue towards Calais for thereturn crossing to Dover and home.

Day 1-2 Depart the UK. Travel to Dover for the crossing to Calaisand onto your overnight hotel in France. Arrive inOberammergau the next day.*

Day 7 Triberg Waterfalls and Cuckoo Clocks. Drive to the GlotterValley, arriving in St. Peter before travelling along thePanorama Road and visit Fürtwangen, home of the GermanCuckoo Clock Museum (not included). Continue to Triberg,home to the highest waterfalls in Germany.

Payment Schedule

At the time of printing this brochure (April 2016) we expect to receive full details ofreservation and payment procedures from theOberammergau organisers in summer 2018.

As soon as we receive the "Sales Regulations" fromOberammergau, we will advise the full terms uponwhich we will receive and pay out deposits, andthe circumstances in which deposits paid may berefunded. You will not be asked to make advancepayments without being fully aware of the basis onwhich we will deal with them
