Summer may not have officially ended yet, but the Skate Oakville 2014-15 figure-skat- ing season is already into full swing. Twenty-five of the club’s competitive skat- ers, overseen by competitive director Mi- chelle Leigh, combined to win nine medals at various events this sum- mer as they prepared for qualifying meets this fall. Several will attend an in- vitational competition in Paris, Ont., this weekend in advance of the Skate Canada Central Ontario sectionals Oct. 30- Nov. 2 in Georgetown. Skate Oakville will also send one skater, Emma Dinda (novice women), to the Skate Ontario Super Series Final in Ottawa Oct. 3-5. The club will ice 10 synchronized skating teams this season, the most in Skate Oakville history, ranging in age and ability levels from beginner to adult. More than 100 skaters make up the teams that practise on a weekly basis and will each enter at least three compe- titions. Several of the teams are top contenders in their divisions, in- cluding two squads that advanced to the national championships last year. Jennifer O’Brien is the head of the synchronized skating program. In the first week of October, Skate Oakville will welcome back its Learn to Skate participants, some of whom attended summer camps that were a joint venture with the Town of Oakville. Also, the STARSkaters who come out a few times per week for the love of skating and participate in Skate Canada will return to the ice. The club’s competitive ice dance program, headed by Mark Brad- shaw, enters its fourth season with five competitive teams. It also of- fers opportunities for skaters com- peting in solo dance events as well as a junior dance program for skaters in- terested in ice dance but not yet partnered with another skater. Skate Oakville will also host Synchro Ca- pers, a large synchronized skating competi- tion, for the third year in a row. The event, slated for Jan. 31-Feb. 1, is expected to attract more than 1,000 skat- ers from 100-plus teams across the province. In March, the club will hold its biennial ice show where skaters at all levels, including the youngest preschool Learn to Skate par- ticipants, are able to have fun and show off their love of the sport. Skate Oakville features more than 2,500 skaters and was recently named by Skate Canada as the largest skating club in Can- ada for the third year in a row. The club is based out of Sixteen Mile Sports Complex and also operates out of Glen Abbey Recre- ation Centre. WE HAVE LESS EXPENSIVE LEAGUE OPTIONS!! LEAGUE BEGINS PLAY SEPTEMBER 15TH!!
