“Oak Leaf Shade Bench”
“My benches are playful objects that invite interaction with the passer- by.
Though they function as seating, there is an impracticality of form that lures people to explore each bench.”
“The Arbor Anime”
Helen Lessick
This poetic installment of tutus draws the viewer’s eyes above to the trees that
wear them, inviting onlookers to ponder the environment around us. The Arbor
Anime pays homage to ‘Le Jardin Anime’ the second act of a ballet based
on Lord Byron’s poem The Corsair.
“Celestial Motion”
Hanna Jubran
This piece was inspired by the movement of the planet earth in space. The shape of the sculpture is like a harp and the shape of the moon. The small
rods move in the wind creating soft melodies of the cosmos.
About Meet the Jurors“Memory Bomb”
Adam Walls
“The natural patina and worn paint of this object bares with it the markings of age and thusly has its own memory. It is memory itself that I wish to stir with this art object as the viewer reaches inside to wind up the music box and hear a
peaceful lullaby.”
Academy Street Artwork Projects is an art initiative to cultivate community engagement in public art on display in downtown Cary. With the support of the Town of Cary, ASAP has teamed up with Cary Visual Art (CVA) to host the grand opening reception for the “Music, Dance and Poetry” procession. Six artists were selected to participate in this procession of sculptures that will line Academy Street from June 8th 2018 to November 2019. Additionally, 12 newly installed stone benches by artist and this year’s juror, Jack Mackie, were added to the tour to reflect Cary’s unique relationship to its most precious cultural resource – the arts. This exhibition is juried by artist Jack Mackie and Public Art Director Kim Curry-Evans.
Jack Mackie is a renowned public artist who strives to find the stories that are unique to every place and act as the “go-between who illuminates what’s already there. That’s where I always begin”. His past projects include the Dancer’s Series: Steps of Seattle, WA and Academy Street Melody of Cary, NC.
With over twenty five years of professional experience in
the public art and museum field, Kim Curry-Evans has a wide range of skills and
specialties. She is the former public art coordinator for
the city of Raleigh and now works as the Public Art
Director for Scottsdale Arts. Kim Curry-Evans

“Gemini”
Ray Katz
“As in music, dance and poetry, I use the abstract manipulation of form and
shape in space to create visual balance, using rhythm, action and
movement.”
“Depth of Form”
Jacob Burmood
“Depth of Form is an extremely durable sculpture... it is based on the fluid movements of the human body, and specifically a rave style of dance
called ‘Liquid’.”
“Academy Street Melody”
Jack Mackie
See if you can spot all 12 of these granite benches when you walk along Academy Street. Each one is uniquely
designed to mimic the shape of a musical instrument, complete with
etchings of dogwood flowers, animals and excerpts from poems.
