FROM YOUR PASTOR

Lent is a 40-day liturgical season of the Church which begins on Ash

Wednesday and ends on Great Sabbath, the day before Resurrection

Sunday. Sundays are not counted in the 40 days, because each Sun-

day was considered a “little Easter” in the early Church. Sundays

were a joyful celebration of Christ’s resurrection. “Lent” is not men-

tioned in the Bible, but it has long been a tradition in the Christian

Church. The significance of the number “40” is thought to represent

the 40 days Jesus spent in the wilderness.

The theme of Lent is penitence and discipline. It is an intentional

time of humbling ourselves before God and taking a serious look at

where we are spiritually. We spend increased time in devotion,

study, prayer, and worship to help us draw closer to our Lord. We

also try to give more of ourselves in service to Christ. Sometimes we

give up things that are tempting to us to remind us of the temptation

Jesus faced in the wilderness.

Ash Wednesday is the first day in Lent. On this day, we focus on our

sinfulness and mortality. We mourn for our sins as we reflect on the

suffering and death of Jesus. “Ashes” are referred to many times in

the Old Testament as a sign of sorrow, mourning, humility, and re-

pentance. The symbolism of places ashes on the forehead in the sign

of a cross is to remind us of our mortality and that “you are dust, and

to dust you shall return.” (Genesis 3:19)

The most solemn week of Lent is Holy Week where we journey with

Christ in the events of His last week on earth. We celebrate the maj-

esty of Palm Sunday, gather with Jesus in the Upper on Maundy

Thursday, and stand at the foot of the cross on Good Friday.

We do all this during Lent to prepare ourselves for the resurrection of

Jesus on Easter Sunday. We cannot fully appreciate the joy and vic-

tory of Easter unless we first experience the fasting and temptation in

the wilderness and the pain and suffering of the cross on Good Fri-

day.

Please use this Lenten season to prepare yourself, draw closer to Je-

sus, journey with Him, and experience genuine spiritual renewal.

God bless and I’ll see you in church!

Matthew
