Hi Oldsmobile people:

At our planning meeting we set up an event for every month and included a caravan to the National Antique Oldsmobile Club (NAOC) Nationals held in Minden, Nevada in late June. Stewart and Trish Overholtzer have offered to host the caravan. More info at www.antiqueolds.org (see Events pg 5) An event you won’t see in this issue we will have actually started just before you get this Oldsletter. I got notification that Bill Hoffert of Fairfield has a 1932 Oldsmobile Patrician in restoration. He has painted the fenders, doors and hood off the car and the body on the car. Unfortunately he has been diagnosed with terminal cancer and is recently in need of Hospice care. He is unable to complete assembly so a group from our club has offered to help reassemble the car for him. Work will begin on Feb 17th. If you have an inclination to assist please give me a call.

Jon Manji is our Zone Director. He was appointed late in the term and soon is up for re-election. I have nominated him for the office and his name will appear on the ballot in an upcoming edition of OCAs Journey With Olds. Make sure you vote, we need him! Editor’s NoteThis issue has the Annual Zone Show registration flyer as an insert. Held this year in

Pismo Beach, our Zone Director, Jon Manji has written a piece about our new venue on page 10.

Also this is our annual club membership roster which every member will get this as a hard copy to use throughout the year to contact fellow members as needed.

We have updated our events for the year but not all is final and we’re open to new suggestions by membership. The roster is a good tool get with others at various cars shows share the fun. Send me pictures and can include them in the Oldsletter.

January 18, 2014 Nor Cal Meeting Minutes

Newly elected President Larry Ewing opened the meeting at 10:06 a.m. at the Califor-nia Auto Museum in Sacramento, California with 16 in attendance. He introduced our newest club officer, Vice-President Denise La Centra. He introduced members Bob and Mercedes Wise. Bob and Mercedes were part of the original founding members of Nor Cal Olds.

Membership & Treasurer’s Report: Dan reported 90 members and 27 associate members renewed their dues. Our membership count at the end of 2013 was 140. He reported that we are solvent, however, we had a $3,128 deficit last year. The rise in expenses, less attendance, and increase in trophy costs for both Zone and Micke Grove shows were the cause of the deficit.

Car Show Chairman: Jon Manji announced this year’s Zone Show will be May 16-18, 2014. The location of the show has been moved from Morro Bay to Pismo Beach. Jon cited the reason for the change was decreasing attendance and rising costs which have resulted in both clubs bearing the financial losses. Jon brought up for discussion on how to increase attendance at our two main shows for 2014, which lead into the cost of trophies for the two shows. After much discussion and ideas being brought forth a motion was made by Larry Ewing to use only one size plaque (7”x9”) with differ-ent class designs for all events. Dan Haggerty seconded the motion, and all ayes from the attending members. Further discussion was about members feedback that they already have so many of the plaques they would like something different. Ribbons were also discussed. Jon Manji brought forward the idea that members be given a choice between a plaque or give the costs associated to the R.E. Olds Museum. After this discussion Jon made a motion to implement the donation option to the R.E. Olds Museum. Steve Spatola seconded the motion, and member ayes all around. Jon also announced that Micke Grove Park has determined that we must pay one and half spaces per car. This will be added to our rental agreement for the 2014 show. All other issues with the planning of Micke Grove were tabled until next meeting.

Public Relations: Larry announced that Mike Barentson, our Public Relations chair, has moved to another state and Denise La Centra has agreed to taking over that posi-tion. Congratulations and our thanks to Denise.

Health and Welfare: Linda Sutherland stated that she had received a letter from Paul Bonnar regarding Diane Kauffman. Mr. Bonnar wrote that she had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease and moved into an assisted living facility which has a memory care unit. He encourages visits, but said she may not always recognize her visitors. Cards are also welcome, you can send her one at Aegis of Pleasant Hill, 1660 Oak Park Blvd., Pleasant Hill, CA 94523.

Larry also announced that long time member Frank Schwab has been diagnosed with terminal cancer.

Dan Haggerty put forth to the membership a change to our Bylaws. The change was to membership rules, that being a member of Nor Cal Olds club does not require a membership in OCA. A motion was made by Stuart Overholtzer to accept the bylaws and Jeanie seconded, and member ayes all around.

Newsletter Editor: Larry talked about our first color version of the newsletter, which lead into a discussion about the delivery of the newsletter. After discussion it was determined to leave the delivery as is.

New BusinessPat Kennedy announced that OCA elections will be held this year. Larry Ewing asked Jon Manji if he was going to continue with the Southwest Zone Director. Jon needs someone from OCA to nominate him for the position. Larry made a motion to recom-mend Jon to OCA for that position, Dan Haggerty seconded the motion, member ayes all around.

Larry started the discussion for the 2014 calendar. As follows are this year’s events.

January: Promote Nor Cal Olds Club at Turlock Swap Meet, Bldg 2 Space 12, Jan 25-26th. February: Organize a working group for the 1932 Olds belonging to Bill Hoffert in Fairfield that needs help with assembly.March: Dominic Spinetta will host a working meeting at his San Rafael home along with a Tour of a Nike Missile Site, near Fort Baker. Take a Look at the Updated Zone Show! By Jon Manji

Your Club Officers and their counterparts in the Southern California Olds Club have given the Show a redo, just in time for our 30th annual Show.

We’ve listened to the comments from Show attendees, present and past, to see why people attend the Show, as well as why they don’t. These comments are what have prompted the changes that you’ll see at this year’s Show.

Zone Shows are hosted by local OCA chapters and provide a great way for prospective and existing members to “test the waters” and experience some of the activities found at a National Meet, without the long travel distances and related expenses. The Shows are also a great introduction to the world of OCA judging, a feeder team to the major leagues (OCA National Meets), if you will.

There will be more Oldsmobiles present than at a mixed-make or local show, so you’re much more likely to find people speaking “Oldsmobile”, which is useful whether you’re looking for a part, a service, a car, or just some advice regarding your Oldsmobile.

To encourage more people to become OCA and local chapter members, the previous OCA membership requirement for Show participation has been dropped. This applies to all aspects of the Show; Judged Competition, Display-Only, and Swap Meet Vendor. So, if you know someone who has an Oldsmobile and isn’t an OCA or local chapter member, please encourage them to participate.

Now, back to the changes we’ve made for this year. All of the changes tie into past Show comments, so I think it’s easier to list the comments and the changes together:

- It’s Hard to Keep My Car Clean at the Show. The Inn at Morro Bay (site of previous Zone Shows), was next to a bird sanctuary and had many trees covering the show field area. There are no trees near the show field at our new location (the SeaCrest Hotel, Pismo Beach), this lowers the chance of birds ruining your detail job.

- Food Prices Are Too High. Our new location has a Marie Callender’s restaurant sharing a common parking lot with the Hotel. A banquet room at Marie’s will be the site of our Saturday awards dinner. The dinner meal prices are $5/person lower than last year, with more amenities (beverage, corn bread, & dessert) included. In addition, excluding the awards dinner, Marie Callender’s is offering our group a 25% discount on all other meals. The guest rooms at the SeaCrest Hotel have microwave ovens, refrigerators, and Keurig coffee machines. The Hotel offers registered guests a complimentary continental breakfast each morning, as well as complimentary coffee, hot cocoa, and cookies throughout the day.

- I Don’t Go To Shows or Just Do Display-Only Because I’ve Got Too Many Awards. When signing up for the Show, you now have the option to have a cash donation made in your name to the RE Olds Transportation Museum instead of any award plaque or trophy that you might receive. The donation amount will be equiva-lent to the cost of whatever award you would otherwise be receiving. If you win an award, you will still be recognized at the awards banquet and we’ll “loan” you an award for the ceremony.

- I Can’t Bring My Pet. Our host Hotel prides itself on being pet friendly, and for more info, please visit the Hotel’s website at: www.seacrestpismo.com

- There’s Nothing To Do If I’m Not Interested in Cars. Starting at the Hotel and moving outward, there are three hot tubs, the pool, direct access to the beach, bicycle rentals, Factory Outlet Stores just down the street to the south, and downtown Pismo Beach just to the north up the street. Check out Pismo Beach’s website at: www.classiccalifornia.com for more info on the many activities and sightseeing opportuni-ties in the area.

- The Rooms Are Too Expensive. The room prices are the same as last year, but any time you are in a tourist area, prices are pretty much the same. For the same prices as last year, we are getting more amenities (as listed under Food Prices... above) and what we think will be a better overall experience in terms of service and location. At our Friday evening Welcome Mixer, you’ll be able to enjoy your favorite beverage and the company of your Oldsmobile friends while watching the sun set over the Pacific Ocean. You won’t get that view in Bakersfield. If you check comparable room prices in other areas of California, I think you’ll find the premium we pay for the ocean view is quite reasonable. And speaking of Bakersfield, I stayed there recently and paid $123/night at a Holiday Inn Express with a great view of Highway 58. Compare that to the $125-$149/night rates for the Show.

As you can see, we’ve made many changes to this year’s Show. Whether you’re considering attending again or a first-timer, please join us for the Show and let us know what you think. And don’t forget that our group room rates are only guaranteed until April 16th, after that the rates and room availability are on a space-available basis, so please make your reservations early.

Out and About with OldsmobilesI went to this show in 2013 and had a great time. There are actually 2 shows and sometimes 3 as was the case last year. All in the same place and on the same weekend!It’s a 2 day drive from the Bay Area but worth it for Oldsmobiles. Of course most cars are from the AZ area but a good amout come from So Cal and Nor Cal members Dan and Jackie Flan-nagan were there too.

You may not see this car often but this is the beautiful ‘63 F-85 belongs to Linda and Don Sutherland. They are at nearly all the events and are always working to support the club. Linda as Secretary and Don as our Webmaster. Their neat little F-85 unfortu-nately gets to stay home most of the time. This is the car we used for the

theme of our last Morro Bay show with a view looking over the dash out at Morro Rock. The cover car shows the top down and to the right with top up. Either way this car looks marvelous!On the following page is the factory promotional literature calling it one of their 3 Sports Cars. Enjoy.

Swap Meet Update My friend Danny Wiles and I arrived in Turlock about 5am Saturday morning. It was dark and they were letting the vendors in to set up. It appears most vendors set up Friday then return Sat. I think this is a good idea as leaving San Jose at 2:30-3:00 am makes for a long long day. Our building was not opened until after 7 am and that is when they actually let in the buying public. We hustled and set up the banner and table and soon members Jeanie and Alan Marsden, Jon Manji, and Denise La Centra arrived. We had 3 tables, two I brought and one we rented from the swap as we did last year. I had car parts that covered most and Jon had a box which his sales went toward our club. Thank you Jon. We had many ques-tions about our club and Oldsmobiles but no new membership sign ups. We passed out applications and Zone Show flyers. We had shirts but no sales. The weather was like summer outside and there was a large crowd of buyers. Dan and I returned Sunday for 4 of 5 hours. Buy-ing traffic was light so we packed up and headed home.I was able to sell enough car parts to cover my motel, gas, and food bill but went a little over with some of the new stuff I dragged home! Nor Cal Olds Club dues are $25.00 per year for member only and you can add a spouse for $5.00 per year.Nor Cal collects Northern California Chapter dues on an annual basis due January of each year.
