The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me; therefore He has anointed Me: He has sent Me to preach the Gospel to the poor.” Luke 4:18 “[In ancient times] both kings and priests were anointed symbolically... but He Who for our sakes became incar- nate, was anointed with the spiritual oil of sanctifi- cation, and the actual descent of the Spirit, receiving It not for Himself, but for us. For inasmuch as the Spirit had taken its flight, and not made His abode in us...the earth was full of grief, being deprived of the partici- pation of God. He proclaimed deliverance to captives, which He ac- complished by having bound the strong one, Satan, who in tyrant fashion lorded it over our race, [having captured us from God]. For the Only-begotten came into this world and gave a new covenant to His kindred...even the covenant long before announced by the voice of the prophets. But the divine and heavenly light shone also upon the Gentiles: and He went and preached to the spirits in Hades, and showed Himself to those who were shut up in the guard-house, and freed all from their bonds and violence.” (Sermon XII, St. Cyril of Alexandria, edited) Third Sunday in Ordinary Time | January 27, 2019 800 Bello Street, Pismo Beach CA 93449 - 2310 Fr. “The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me; therefore He has anointed Me: He has sent Me to preach the Gospel to the poor.” —Luke 4:18

“[In ancient times] both kings and priests were anointed symbolically... but He Who for our sakes became incar-nate, was anointed with the spiritual oil of sanctifi-cation, and the actual descent of the Spirit, receiving It not for Himself, but for us. For inasmuch as the Spirit had taken its flight, and not made His abode in us...the earth was full of grief, being deprived of the partici-pation of God.

He proclaimed deliverance to captives, which He ac-complished by having bound the strong one, Satan, who

in tyrant fashion lorded it over our race, [having captured us from God]. Cyril of Alexandria, edited)

TIME The holidays are well behind us; the year stretch-es out ahead. And what sort of year will it be? To judge by the words of Jesus in to-day’s Gospel, it will be “a year acceptable to the Lord.” And Jesus surely did-n’t mean only the next three hundred sixty-five days facing his listeners at that time. When Jesus announced the “arrival” of God’s favor, it was a message for all time, for every year. Similarly, we read today in Nehemiah how the peo-ple gathered with solemnity to hear God’s word as though for the first time. They listened, and then fell to the ground and wept. But the prophet said, “Today is holy . . . do not be sad, and do not weep.” The “year acceptable to the Lord” is this year. The day that is “holy” is this day. The time to listen is now. What sort of year will you have? What sort of day? God’s help is always here. What you do with each day can be holy and acceptable to the Lord if you but listen to and act on God’s word.
