O F F I C I A L H S E P U B L I C A T I O N O F D Y N A - M A C H O L D I N G S L T D Health Matters REVEALING HEALTHY OPTIONS
Fit Test training was recently held at HSE office to generate awareness on
respirator fit testing requirements for any worker who is required to don a tight-fitting
respirator. This training allows the user to pick the most acceptable respirator from a
number of respirator models and sizes so that the respirator is acceptable, and
correctly fits to the nature of work assigned.
The demonstration and the experience gained during the respiratory protection
training have provided trainees an insight that was generally unknown to our
workforce. Due to the nature of our work environment, our workforce are exposed
to heat, humidity and metal fumes which often leads to Occupational diseases
such as chronic lung or heart disease and respiratory problems –Asthma etc.
Occupational asthma is caused or worsened by breathing in chemical fumes,
gases, dust or other substances during the period on the job. Like other types of
asthma, occupational asthma can cause chest tightness, wheezing and shortness
of breath. If treated early, occupational asthma may be reversible. Long-term
exposure to allergy-causing substances can cause worsening symptoms and
lifelong asthma. Treatment for occupational asthma is similar to treatment for other
types of asthma, and it generally includes taking medications to reduce symptoms.
But the only way to eliminate the symptoms and prevent lung damage due to
occupational asthma is to avoid whatever's triggering it. We train our workforce to
wear face mask properly and discourage the use of substandard substitute.

EDITOR’S NOTE:
By – Jason
This is the 6th issue of the HSE
Newsletter, it is with great pride to
share our achievements in the first
half of this year. Numerous events
were sighted and are now part of
Dyna-Mac history. We wish to
enlighten the readers in areas such
as safety in grinding work,
elaboration on health, everyday
inspections and reports on several
HSE significant activities. Reliability
of common PPE is discussed for
general knowledge. An overview
of the latest yearly surveillance
OHSAS audit will be provided. We
have elaborated the significance
of our fresh partnership with new
clients and discussed their
contribution to Dyna-Mac’s vision.
These are the supplementary
stories presented as one whole
package for your information and
reading pleasure.
SCREEN DILEMMA Computer vision syndrome (CVS) is a
temporary condition resulting from
focusing on a computer display for
prolonged periods of time. Some
symptoms of CVS include headaches,
blurred vision, neck pain, redness in the
eyes, fatigue, eye strain, dry eyes,
irritated eyes, double vision,
vertigo/dizziness, polyopia, and difficulty
refocusing the eyes. These symptoms
can be further aggravated by improper
lighting conditions. Prevention involves
taking steps to control lighting and glare
on the device screen, establishing
proper working distances and posture
for screen viewing, and assuring that
even minor vision problems are properly
corrected.

MANDATORY INSPECTIONS by Sean
WSH IMPLEMENTS IT SERIOUSLY, WE TAKE STEPS TO ABIDE THE REGULATIONS BY ANY PRACTICAL MEANS POSSIBLE. Workplace inspection helps to
prevent injuries and illnesses. Through
meticulous inspection, hazards are
identified and recorded for the
implementation of various corrective
measures. Special attention must be
catered to machineries and personal
tools that will develop unsafe or
unhealthy conditions due to wear and
tear. The safe work procedures
mandate the frequency of inspections
on specified tools and equipment. The
workers are trained to ensure that they
fully understood the company’s SWP.
Updating of information such as tags,
check sheets and safety notice boards

FOCUS ON HSMS COMPLIANCE
Employers have a duty to ensure the safety and health of workers in every
aspect related to the work. Safety audit provides a platform assessing the
effectiveness of the company safety management system and its validity for the
future.
The surveillance audit that took place on 14th April 2015 by external party, ABS,
has given us the opportunity to identify our strengths in our existing health and
safety management system. Recommendations were made to enhance the
program for continuing development and improvement.
The audit was conducted using a series of detailed audit criteria that addressed
the audit objective. Prior to finalizing the audit criteria, the areas of concerns and
opportunity of improvement have been assessed.
Our system is generally working well as agreed by the auditors, with a few
observations that were brought up for improvement.
The HSE department is pleased with the cooperation and all preparation work
done by all department for the audit. Moving forward, we hope to resolve all issues
in the shortest period of time with the cooperation of every department. The
Compliance Audit & Training (CAT) had initiated an internal audit to bridge
information with other departments and seal off the gaps found by the
auditor._______________

WORK AT HEIGHT RESCUE
Working at Height is one of the
most common activities that are
prone to accident. Especially in
DM, majority of the workers are
involved in certain work at height
activities during the construction of
topside modules. In view of that,
DM’s ERT conducted a Work at
Height rescue on 21st March 2015,
together with DM’s Medical Team.
A dummy was used in place of a
real person during the process of
rescue. Further evaluation such as,
a r e a s o f i m p r o v e m e n t a n d
execution time were discussed
towards the end of the exercise.
This ensure that all HSE personnel
are executing the exercise at their
fu l le s t potent ia l . ___________
.
A minor incident can escalate into a major one if it is not treated in time. Therefore, it is important that our rescue team
carries out the rescue/drill in the shortest time available. Trainings in both fire-fighting and rescue drills are vital to prep our
rescue team in times of emergency. Every step of the rescue procedure is critical. Hence, a well analyzed plan should be
drawn up before the execution of a drill. This will enable the team to carry out their task efficiently in actual situation. The teams
effort translates to their effectiveness which consequently gains trust and confidence of the workforce.

FOCUS ON CLIENT SATISFACTION
FIRE WATCHMAN TRAINING Fire watchmen training allows
the workers to better understand
hazards that arise from hot work
activities. The intention was to
simulate a real life fire-fighting
scenario, which place the workers
in a position where they have to
assess and react according to the
given situation. In accordance to
the requirement of the Ministry of
M a n p o w e r ( M O M ) , a f i r e
watchman has to be in place
during any hot work activity. All
MOM’s safety requirements are
strictly adhered to in DM, because

On the 18th of April 2015, DM’s
Emergency Response Team (ERT)
conducted an Oil Spill Control &
Preparedness Drill. This drill simulates
an oil spill, which then leads to an
oil combustion that requires the
activation of DM’s ERT. In DM, we
adopt a basic fire-fighting response
protocol that begins with saw dust
oil absorption to contain the oil ,
followed by cleaning up at later
stage. The entire procedure was

To understand the significance of this project, we have to take a closer look at the past events leading to the
accomplishment of the first strike steel.
A MOMENTOUS EVENT HAS FORMED A SILHOUETTE WHERE THE BENEFITS OF HSE IS TAKING ITS INITIAL STEPS TO LOBE THE FUTURE OF DYNA-MAC.
(Cont’d fr. pg. 8) - Petrofac Emirates was selected to build its Oil Production Module
on 27th May 2013. The modules will be added to the Upper Zakum (UZ) oil field to
achieve the 750,000 Barrels of Oil Per Day (BOPD) from the current 550,000. DSME,
together with Petrofac Emirates (PE) had awarded a contract to Dyna-Mac to
fabricate 12 modules.
Given DM’s proven track record in the topsides fabrication, together with its well
established HSE system, has put the company among the top consideration of
Petrofac Emirates. DM top management has noted key improvements from their
last visit to DSME yard (S. Korea) in late 2013. HSE department has since revamped
to meet the management’s expectation as well as to prepare for the upcoming
major milestone.
Initiatives were sited in an effort to
strengthen the firm HSE system and
ensure its sustainability. One of such
initiatives was the implementation of
DM 15 Life Saving Rules.
We have the responsibility to comply
with client and shipyard regulations and
we successfully integrated this into one
project safety management system.
DSME, Petrofac Emirates and Zadco
have all given their full support to make
project HSE achievable.
Through the years of DM activities,
major development and breakthroughs
in both HSE and quality were witnessed.
We have proven our capabilities and
reputation in building solid structures on
time. We will justify it again with our on-
going projects.

Reliability is time clicking By Matin
UNDERSTANDING BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
Wearing good quality and reliable
PPE is important in protecting our body
when at work in the yards. It must be
worn properly to serve its intended
function and does not last a lifetime. It
loses integrity over time due to wear

Hardhat protects your head from
falling objects and using better quality
means better protection over time. The
hat is made from durable material such
as High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) – a
thermoplastic. HDPE deteriorates with
weather exposure and contemplates
with prolonged periods. To keep it in
good condition, proper cleaning and
storage is advised. Use lukewarm water
with mild detergent to get rid of oily
subs tances and d i r t wh ich can
generally affect the plastic integrity.
Store in places away from heat, dust
and oil . Do not use any abrasive
materials to clean the surface as it will
weaken the profile. The harness/

Typical hard hat would have an
engraved or embossed numer ic
containing the date and year of
manufacture. In Singapore context, this
helmet has due period of three years or
to be replaced on signs of deterioration
like cracks and shape deformation or
when exposed to or under the sunlight
for a prolonged period of time. Keep
your hard hat inside cool places like
locker or drawer. If you don’t have
these items, keep it in a place with
room temperature. While most of the
PPE we use fol lows standards, i ts
reliability still depends on how the person
use and store it. ___________________
CHECKING RELIABILTY OF YOUR PPE IS A NORM, NEGLECT IS ONLY THE LAST THING IN YOUR MIND.

WHAT TO LOOK OUT FOR IN GRINDING by Eric
GRINDING AND CUTTING DISK HAS DIFFERENT USAGE AND MUST BE CLEAR BEFORE ANYONE USE IT FOR WORK. A typical grinding wheel is
called “Tapered Wheel” which is
straight wheel that tapers outward
and towards the center of the
wheel. This arrangement is stronger
than straight wheels and is able to
handle higher lateral loads.
Tapered face straight wheel is
primarily used for grinding to
smoothen metal surfaces after a
gas cutting procedure. A cutting
wheel or normally called “Cut Off
Wheel” are self-sharpening wheels
that are thin in width and often
have radial fibers reinforcing them.
They are often used in the
construction industry for cutting
protruding bolts or anything that
needs quick removal or trimming.
A cut off wheel is not designed for
other use thus breaks when used
for grinding. Both has written
information on the size and
revolution per minute (RPM). Its
designed RPM cannot be less than
that of the portable grinder to
avoid rupture on use. The portable
grinder has information showing
maximum RPM and this serves as a
guidance before use. Understand
all the information given before
use to prevent any mishandling.
