WHAT IS NZ MODEL UN? NZ Model UN is the premier Model UN event organized by UN Youth NZ. NZ Model UN annually attracts well over 200 like-minded high school students to the conference. It is a multifaceted educa-tional experience that supports the vision, value and the principles of the NZ Curriculum, which aims to encourage and inspire young New Zealanders to identify with communities beyond national bor-ders and respect other cultures.

The NZ Model UN conference is a simulation of a real UN assembly. As delegates, you will be presented with the opportunity to step into the shoes of international diplomats, representing member states of the United Nations. Mastering the art of persuasion, you will lobby to adopt resolutions to current global issues. You will ex-perience first hand the dynamics of international relations and the challenges of achieving global compromise by learning to negotiate with those whose positions are contrary to your own. OUTREACH

The goal of the Outreach Programme is to bring global citizens down to a grass roots level and to inspire them to seek out ways of assisting their local communities. After a hard days work of being in the shoes of an international diplomat, we have social events exclusively planned for you to unwind and get to know your peers. Regional Grouping Dinners are hosted at some of Wellingtons most popular restaurants while a super schmancy formal ball is always the schmancy formal ball is always the highlight of the social calendar. Traditionally hosted on the penultimate night of the conference, delegates doll up and throw on their dancing shoes for a memorable night as they put aside the stress of saving the world.

COMMITTEES

Committee sessions are the staple of a Committee sessions are the staple of a Model UN, where you get to debate resolutions from the stance of a member state. Each delegate will participate in three committee sessions on different issues. Some delegates will have the opportunity to debate in the UN Security Council where the UN Security Council where the Permanent Five will have the power of the almighty veto. The final day is spent in the plenary session where all 240 delegates will have the chance to take part in debating resolutions on a larger scale.

We pride ourselves in the close connection of the Model UN Programme and the NZ Curriculum and the Teachers’ Workshop is a crucial and NZ Curriculum and the Teachers’ Workshop is a crucial and integral part of this holistic approach.

SCHOLARSHIPS

This year there will be a number of different scholarship options. You can apply for a scholarship for either merit or accessibility purposes. For these scholarships you should use the scholarship registration forms and you will need to submit either a short video or an essay addressing one of the topics on the registration form.

And, we will bring them all together to work cohesively as a team of Conference Assistants at NZ Model UN 2012.

For the four days of the conference, Conference Assistants help the conference run For the four days of the conference, Conference Assistants help the conference run smoothly, facilitate delegate workshops, participate in the Outreach Programme, listen to speeches from experts in the field of international relations, attend the ball, and end up exhausted but happy. Conference Assistants participate in all aspects of the conference as an organisational and guiding body for the delegates. Conference Assistants often return to NZ Model UN year after year to see one another, and to experience the rush that is the four days of NZ Model UN.

CHAIRPERSONThe Chairperson will facilitate the committee The Chairperson will facilitate the committee sessions. This will involve enforcing the rules of procedure, calling for speakers and so forth. The Chair needs to have a firm grip over the rules of procedure, and have had experience chairing before. Duties will include updating the speakers list, checking prospective amendments and transferring these onto the computer so they can be debated.
