PROJECT 2 • GRID SURFACE. ENVIRONMENT. SITE.

Create interesting voids in a rectangular block to later be inhabited. This is the first part of

one of the first projects where students were introduced to a random site they could not

manipulate. We study the relationship between surface environment and site.

PROJECT 3 • CHOSEN SITE. INHABITED

The project is a continuation of Project 1. The rectangular block is changed into an inhabit-

able scale and cut in half. The project asks for the design of three spaces. One for the morning,

one for the afternoon, and one for the night time. All the spaces must connect through vertical

circulation and must be able to bring you from one side of the site to the other. The challenge is

to work with the random voids in the block and choreograph the story through the building at

different times of the day for different spaces.

PROJECT 4 • MUSEUM OF THE IMMIGRANT EXPERIENCE • NEW YORK

The project asks for the design of a museum showcasing the experience of immigration into the

United States of America. The museum is located in New York City, the icon of immigration to the

United States. You are asked to discover a metaphor of the immigration experience and display

that throughout the design of your building.

The way I understood the purpose of immigration to the United States is the hope of acheiving the

“American Dream”. This is the dream to be able to work your way up the socio-economic ladder no

matter from who or where you originate from, and as you work your way up your life becomes more

free and luxurious. This idea is embodied in my building by the design of the spaces which open up

as we move along the building vertically. Also, the main circulation of the building is right behind

the glass facade of the building and that glass facade becomes less crowded by framing as we move

up. Once you reach the top, you are in the “jewel” of the building, or the memorial space, dedicated

in memory of all the people who have journeyed here for the oppurtunity to acheive their dreams.

PROJECT 5 • A PRECEDENT STUDY • INSTITUTE OF CONTEMPORARY ART

The ICA building is different than it seems at first glance. The architects Elizabeth Diller,

Roger Scofidio and Charles Renfro, imagined the building as a medium to deconstruct

everyday spacial perception. The ICA and the architects had one mission in common, to

raise awareness of the public. The Museum selects what is important for the people inside

to see and the architects created what was important for the public to expereince inside

as well as outside the building.

The parti of the building seems fairly simple, a floating glass box which is framed in multiple ways

mechanically, structually and metaphorically. The Architects inteded the building to have a double

functions, not only a museum but also a civic function. The manipulation of the architecture allows

the view to be able to look inwards (museum function) and look outward (civic function). This is

especially true in the gallery (allowing you to look at the city skyline) and the Media Center (allowing

you to look at the water of the harbor).

PROJECT 6 • ULYSSES S. GRANT • VISITOR CENTER ADDITION AND THE ARCHIVES

Ulysses S. Grant was a significant figure in our nations history, as the general-in-chief of the

Union Army during the Civil War and the 18th President of the United States. Grants Tomb (as it is

commonly called) is not only the final resting place of the General but a memorial to his life and

accomplishments.

The project asks for the design of a visitor center and archive adjacent to the General Grant National

Memorial overlooking the Hudson River along Riverside Drive on the Upper West Side of Manhattan.

The memorial is the second largest mausoleum in the Western Hemisphere and is currently an

underutilized facility. The addition of a Visitor Center and The Archive is intended to generate

renewed interest in Grant, the civil War and its aftermath, and the magnificent tomb itself.

PROJECT 7 • A PRECEDENT STUDY • MURCIA CITY HALL

Document, study and analyze the City Hall of Murcia. Located in Murcia, Spain,

the city hall was designed by Rafael Moneo. The seemingly random pattern of

orthogonals, combined with the lack of entrance space on the plaza level, not

only is a sign of respect to surrounding classical architecture but also helps

capture picturesque views of its elegant surroundings.

PROJECT 8 • A FACADE REDESIGN • PALAZZO ANGELO MASSIMO

The project calls for a redisgn of the notorious Palazzo Angelo Massimo. We were allowed to

reconstruct from the inner edge of the sidewalk up to 30 feet into the property. A key part of this

project was to analyze the neighboring building, the Palazzo Massimo alle Colonne, and to try to

understand why the facade was so successful. My design incorporates the pattern strategy from

the City Hall of Murcia as well as some view manipulations of the Palazzo Massimo alle Colonne.

By utilizing a folding pattern that constantly mirrors itself, I created multiple openings

and views into the street all through specific angles. A perfect perpendicular view to the

facade would seemingly create a flat surface. The repetitive folding pattern occurs twice

irregularly to create two dynamic spaces that allow a very different type of interaction

with the public.

PROJECT 9 • A FASHION STUDIO • SERIAL CULTURA

Serial Cultura is a clothing line designed by Jennifer Jennings. Located in California, Jennifer

Jennings primary inspiration for her recent collections has been the use of light with different

filters to create different shadows. These shadows allude to depth and then with the addition of

color, create very unique yet simple designs for her collections.

The project asks for the design of fashion studio adjacent to The Standard Hotel, in the Meatpacking

District of New York City. In order to utilize Serial Cultura’s philosophy and create a unique experience

for all vistiors of the fashion studio, I exagerated the basic structure of the building and by its

alignment with the specific sun angles for different times of the day, it casts inspirational shadows

that mimic the philosophy of Serial Cultura.

SHOWROOM

Utilizing the same process in Serial Cultura’s photoshoot, different “filters” are combined together to create different ef-fects when light passes through each one.

The Showroom is catageorized as the most important space in the building. It is the area where the designs and imaginative process of the designer is showcased. The Showroom is intended to be a private and exclu-sive space where the “1 percent” are invited and get to experience the “magic”. By placing a slight pitch to the showroom roof, a public outdoor space is created right behind the “filter” wall, thus any normal person on the street can still experience the building without being inside.

Sun angles through the build-ing during different times of the day during the month of April. (The primary collection release)
