NEW YORK CITY ADULT EDUCATION STUDENT STATISTICS
The following tables and charts show data reported by adult education providers in the New York City region of New York State for the fiscal year 2012, which spans the period between July 1, 2011 and June 30th, 2012.
All students reported here fulfill the National Reporting System (NRS) guidelines for reporting, namely, they have completed 12 hours of instruction and have been post tested using one of the State Education Department approved assessment instruments.
In FY 2012, Adult Education programs in the New York City region served 54,050 students. Of these, 33,296 students attended English as a Second Language (ESL) classes and 20,754 attended Basic Education or GED (ABE) classes.
To put these numbers in context, it is useful to look at the need for adult literacy programs in New York City. The American Community Survey (2010) listed the number of NYC residents above the age of 25 without a high school diploma, the potential audience for ABE instruction as 999,712. It also lists the number of residents who 'speak English Less Than Well', the potential target population for ESL classes as 1,855,681.
More details on the NYC adult literacy student population appear in the rest of this document.
