On behalf of the Board of Directors and officers of NONA, I join in congratulating the outstanding nurses who received awards this spring, with nomination letters as listed in this newsletter. As we mark the end of our program year, it is good to celebrate the achievements you'll read about inside. NONA is fortunate to be able to recognize the contributions of its members and other outstanding nurses to our community and to the nurses of Northwest Ohio. As spring turns into summer, NONA also executes its annual leadership transition. We welcome our new and returning board members for the 2014- 2015 year. I look forward to working with them and with other NONA members who we hope will volunteer to assist us with programs and other organizational initiatives during the coming year. If you should get a call or an email from a board member or committee chair asking for a few hours of your valuable time to help your district nurses' association succeed, I hope you will consider doing so. Last, and probably least, I humbly accept the challenge of leading NONA during the coming year. I am pleased to recommend Janelle M. Tipton for the Nursing Excellence Award. I have known Jan for many years in her role as Nurse Practitioner in Oncology, first in the acute care setting, and now as a Clinical Nursing Specialist the Oncology Center at the University of Toledo Medical Center. Both nursing and medical colleagues consult with Jan for her expertise in oncology nursing and her sensitivity to the psychosocial issues attendant with diagnosis and treatment of cancer. Many colleagues also seek Jan out for advice related to their own health experiences of cancer or those of family. Never have I experienced Jan to be anything by compassionate and available. Jan epitomizes the philosophy underlying this award of nursing expertise, leadership, and mentorship. Her education and practice has focused on oncology nursing, she provides leadership to nurses within Northwest Ohio in her field as well as serving as a mentor and role model to other Nurse Practitioners in the area and state. As an experienced NP,

Jan has taken on the role of mentoring many nurse practitioners new to the institution and has attempted to pull the Nurse Practitioners together informally as a support group. An example that illustrates another characteristic occurred in recent years when a friend lived through the physical and emotional suffering associated with disseminated cancer. Although Jan had no professional association with this woman initially, she responded to our call about how to help this friend seek help for the distressing symptoms of treatment. Jan has earned the accolade of this award: Bringing heart into nursing practice and providing extraordinary care in ordinary settings are hallmarks of excellence in nursing practice. Jan has chosen to spend much of her professional career since 1988 at the Medical College of Ohio, now the University of Toledo Medical Center. Jan earned a Master in Nursing Degree from Wayne State University in Nursing Education. Jan's positions within the UT system have included staff nurse, head nurse and nurse clinician in oncology; Nurse Coordinator of the Cancer Institute; Nurse Manager of the Infusion Center and

education to all of the oncology patients. She gives whole-heartedly of herself to her patients, colleagues, and her profession. She is first and foremost an advocate for her patients, often going above and beyond the call of duty. Jan is an exceptional care-giver and an outstanding nurse! Jan is the ‘go-to” person regarding oncology questions here at UTMC. Jan is truly an exceptional oncology nurse and a vital asset to UTMC. It is a pleasure to work with Jan Tipton! Dr. Skeel wrote: Thank you for asking me to offer some remarks about Jan Tipton with whom I have worked for many years here at the University of Toledo. There are so many wonderful attributes that Jan has, but perhaps highest among them is her dedicated advocacy for her patients and their welfare. Just the other day she told me she had awakened at 3:30 in the morning trying to figure how best to help a young woman with a serious cancer problem who needed both emotional and financial support. She excels in teaching patients (as well as other nurses) and providing them with the resources to guide them through the rigors of treatment for

the Hematology/Oncology Clinic; and the title since 1993 of Oncology Clinical Nurse Specialist, with certification in Advanced Oncology Nursing. Professional memberships include: the Oncology Nursing Society, National

and Toledo Area Chapters; Zeta Theta Tau Chapter-at -Large Sigma Theta Tau International. Within the Oncology Nursing Society, Jan has served on: 1) the Oral Adherence Group, 2) the Evidence-based Practice and Outcomes Subgroup of the Research Advisory Panel, 3) the Education Advisory Panel, 4) the Breast Cancer Measure Set Team, and 5) the Nausea Group. Jan has served on many of the UTMC practice committees and also in the community in such roles as grant reviewer for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, Inc., as a Board member and secretary of the Lucas County Chapter of the American Cancer Society, as a Clinical Instructor since 1999 for the UT College of Nursing. Jan shares her expertise frequently as a speaker on oncology nursing practice in Northwest Ohio and around the country at

various oncology conferences. Jan has received too many honors to mention them all. She received two in the past five years: a) the Roberta Scofield Memorial Certification Award, Oncology Nursing Certification Corporation; and the b) APEX Award Recipient for Publication Excellence, in the One-of-a-Kind Health and Medical Publications Category, Co-editor of Putting Evidence into Practice: Improving Oncology Patient Outcomes. Jan is also widely published in her area of expertise, oncology nursing. Of her publications, at least 23, three of the most recent can be found in well-known nursing books or journals. When I sought additional information from colleagues who have worked closely with Jan, I received comments to include in this nomination from: 1) Sarah Harrigan RN, MSN, OCN, UT Physicians Infusion Center, Nursing Director, Eleanor N Dana Cancer Center; and 2) Dr. Roland Skeel, MD, oncologist, and Jan's collaborating physician. Sarah Harrigan wrote: Jan Tipton is a professional oncology nursing expert and is an excellent clinician. She provides thorough, accurate, and compassionate care and

their cancer. Without her knowledge, expertise and compassion, their road would be much harder. She carries out all of her activities with the humility of a truly great person, despite the fact that she is recognized nationally for her editorship of the nursing book, “Putting Evidence into Practice: Improving Patient Outcomes” and her important service roles in the American Cancer Society and the University of Toledo.

Jan is truly a great nurse – she puts her knowledge, her skills, and her soul into advocacy and care of her patients. I am, therefore, delighted to support her nomination for the Northwest Ohio Nurses Association recognition for excellence in practice. I proudly present in nomination, Janelle M. Nursing Excellence Award

Nomination Letter: Martha Pituch

I would like to nominate Martha Pituch, RN, PhD for the NONA Nursing Excellence Award. Although Dr. Pituch could be nominated for both the Nona Nursing Excellence Award and the NONA Golden Lamp Award, at this time I would like to focus on the nursing expertise, leadership and mentorship and current practice. I first met Dr. Pituch as an undergraduate at the BGSU/UT/MCOT nursing program. I was fortunate to have Dr. Pituch as my instructor for community health my senior year and under her guidance completed my community health rotation at The Visiting Nurse Service, Toledo OH. Following a brief break following my BSN, I undertook studies toward my MSN with the focus on Community Health and Health Administration. Dr. Pituch served as chair of my thesis committee and supported my research, The difference in rehospitalization rates of the chronically ill elderly: with and without homecare.” As I had the opportunity to develop and implement a Medicare homecare program as part of the local hospital, Dr. Pituch influenced that the program was based on Dorothea Orem’s Self-Care Theory and the home care agency became a site for nursing students during their community health rotation. Martha has been my mentor throughout my nursing practice. She has demonstrated leadership in more ways than I can possibly list, influencing nursing practice at both the undergraduate and graduate level. When one thinks of bringing heart into nursing practice and providing extraordinary care in ordinary settings, not only can one point to her nursing practice and academic record prior to retirement, but the bringing heart into nursing practice and providing extraordinary care as a volunteer after retirement.

Nursing Excellence Award Nomination Letter - Martha Pituch

(Continued from page 5.)

Further support for this nomination includes the following from the Toledo Blade, interview with Dr. Pituch with a homeless gentlemen, celebrating Dr. Pituch’s 80th Birthday, "Martha Pituch, RN, Partnering for Health." Dr. Pituch said, “Sometimes you just have to knock on a door and say, this is what I have to offer. How can we work together?" That's typical of Martha Pituch, who pretty much did just that when she offered her nursing services to the homeless in 1985. Martha retired in 1992 but her drive to give back was too strong, and she reopened the clinic at Cherry Street in 2002. “I knew there were men there who needed care" she says. "You’re able to do 'real nursing' with these folks! Martha is an RN, as well as a PhD. and professor of nursing. Martha supplements her own TLC with help from students at The University of Toledo‘s School of Nursing two days a week. She sees that working with the guests at Cherry Street has a transforming effect on the students. As one student recently put it, "Martha, you taught us to look at the inside of people, not just the outside." We're so grateful for Martha's efforts over the years, and for instilling her passion for volunteering with a new generation of nurses. Thank you, Martha, for knocking on our door!

Golden Lamp Award

Nomination Letter:

Bernadette Butler

I am pleased to recommend Bernadette Butler for the Golden Lamp Award from the Northwest Ohio Nurses Association. I have known Bernie almost since the beginning of my teaching career. Bernie has always fulfilled her promises - as a nurse, as a faculty member, as a mother and wife and as a grandmother. During my early years on faculty, we worked on a payment fee schedule for providing continuing education to nurses. Bernie could not understand charging for those services. When I would go home to rest, Bernie would be busy with papers. More recently, her hours are extended by caring for her six small grandchildren during her daughter and son-in-law's work time. Bernie taught women's health for many years, guiding students through the birthing process with mothers, families and babies. She began her career at Mercy School of Nursing moving to BGSU/UT in the early 70’s. She was always willing to teach clinically in whatever area of obstetrics she was needed. She presented lecture classes and

Over her many years in the obstetric field, Bernie has been active in the local, regional and national organization of NAACOG and then with the name change, AWHONN. She attends meetings throughout the area and always has been willing to go to the other states and Canada for the regional meetings. National meetings have included many of us from our faculty and we had a great time traveling together to gain new perspectives on our teaching. She is always anxious to complete viewing all the poster presentations and taking part in research breakouts and listening to conference speakers. She has been a long time member of the Midwest Research Society and attends those meetings frequently. Several of the women’s health faculty developed a tool to help students complete assessment of the pregnant woman and that was included in a publication in Nurse Educator. She used it in all the clinical settings when we first presented the aspects unique to pregnancy. Dr. Butler - yes, she has not only a masters in nursing degree, but a EdD as well! Dr. Butler has faithfully served as a member of the Northwest Ohio Nurses Association, willingly attending many

Bernadette Butler Continued from p. 6: clinical conferences, providing detailed information to guide students. After Bernie's retirement from the faculty of the Medical College of Ohio, she took a position there in the Learning Resource Center helping students learn skills. Her patience with students seems unending, guiding students through each step and helping students understand the underlying rationale. Her energy seems endless, but more accurately, Bernie's commitment is endless. In fact, long after the students have left the lab, Bernie is busy straightening and tidying the lab for the next day. Bernie’s love for teaching is evident in the extensive time she willingly and uncomplainingly spends with any one student who is struggling to learn a skill or a concept. Bernie is always willing to come in on Saturdays to provide tutoring or even participate in recruitment efforts with the Office of Student Services. Bernie has also been a tremendous advocate for assuring that the teaching assistants/nurses that work in the lab receive the respect and recognition that they deserve as contributing educators in the College of Nursing. Bernie has also worked at Lourdes University in the skills laboratory at various times since retirement.

conventions as a delegate and usually at her own expense. Last year was one of the few conventions that Bernie did not attend. Once NONA decided that maintaining a physical office was no longer useful, Bernie continued in her role as Office Consultant, which made being without an office much more manageable. Bernie has stored many of our documents and supplies at her home or occupying fully her car trunk for many years. She has run our errands, checked members in and assumed responsibility for arranging for many of the venues where we have met for General Assembly meetings and dinners.

The NONA Board of Directors voted to support area nursing students who attended the National Student Nurses Association Convention in Tennessee in April. To that end, NONA sent a letter of intent to area nursing programs. Our treasurer sent a check for $416 to each of the Student Nurses' Associations to defray expenses of students who attended the convention from Lourdes University, Mercy College of NWO, Owens Community College, and the University of Toledo College of Nursing.

New Member Initiative

Rhonda Clayton

Owens' school of nursing nominated Rhonda for the NONA Leadership Award, and she attended the NONA Spring Awards Banquet. In her application, Rhonda wrote: I have been a student member of the ANA for the past year and would like to be involved by becoming a member of NONA. I went to school to become a nurse, not just for a job, but to become a member of a profession. As I learn and grow as a new nurse, I believe that I also have a responsibility to learn about the issues facing nurses and the patients that we care for. Taking an active role in my chosen profession is a very important part of showing my commitment to nursing, just as I did while I was a nursing student. When I attended the Spring Awards Banquet, I was in awe and inspired by the accomplishments and dedication of the NONA members and nurse award recipients to students and patients. I would love to become a part of this group of dedicated nursing professionals. I thank you for this opportunity to possibly be selected as a new graduate member, and receive the financial support of a year-long membership with my involvement, as I begin and become established in my own nursing career. [NONA received three applications this year for the New Member Initiative Program.]

News and Thank you's

The board randomly drew Rhonda Clayton's name from those who applied for the New Member Initiative for membership fee support this next year. In return, Rhonda will be serving on the NONA Board of Directors. Rhonda is the second student who will serve in this position since NONA has been offered it for the purpose of increasing involvement by new graduates in our local association. Rhonda graduated this spring from Owens Community College. Welcome to the Board, Rhonda!

Thank you for the honor to be recognized and to have you bestow on me the award of the Golden Lamp. The entire evening was well orchestrated from check-in, written programs, and to presentations with overheads. Molly, you have a very competent board assisting you. My special thanks to Jane Ransom for all her coordination of all the special things she did for a successful evening. An evening to really remember.

Thank you, Bernie Butler▲

Thank you very much for the generous nursing excellence award. I enjoyed the dinner presentation along with my husband. I am honored by the nomination and the support I have with nursing and medical colleagues. Please accept my sincere gratitude, as this honor was received in the company of such great nurses.

Sincerely, Jan Tipton▲

April 28, 2014

Dear NONA Members,

The students from Owens Community College who attended the National Student Nurses’ Association Convention this year in Nashville, Tennessee were: Rhonda Clayton, Monica Steinmetz, Rose Bonilla, and Kaitlynn Andreas. We would like to thank all of you for the generous gift to help defray the cost of the convention. When the students reflected on their experience, some of their comments included:

• I was very fortunate to be able to attend the NSNA convention in Nashville and it was a fantastic experience. I am active with the Toledo SNA group and it was truly inspiring to see our national group in action. We were able to bring back ideas that we can use for our chapter such as new fundraising and community service projects.

• I was able to make contact with a large amount of colleges to get preliminary information about their degree offerings. There were close to 100 college nursing programs represented and I have already followed up with some of them for more information. It was very helpful to have so many college representatives in one place, especially as I am graduating next month and planning on continuing with my education this fall.

• I found the NSNA conference very valuable to my education. The 8 hour NCLEX review was especially helpful to me as it helped me to know what kinds of things I will need to do to prepare for the NCLEX. It also gave me a boost of self-confidence when I knew the answers to some of the questions.

• The most important thing I learned was how important nursing is and how proud I should be.

• I learned some things about being a national delegate. • I met many other students in nursing and we shared ideas about how to raise money for

our organization. • I applied what I learned at the NCLEX review/test sessions and used those strategies in

my exam here at OCC NRS 123, I passed. I feel more confident now when testing. The SNA national convention gave me some great tools and tips to be a better student and succeed here at OCC and in the future.

• The NCLEX review was a very valuable experience. The review course covered review strategies and tips for success, health promotion and maintenance, physiological and psychological integrity, and the nursing process. Other topics included pharmacology, pathophysiology, nursing diagnosis, obstetrics, and mental health. We each received a booklet with the Power Points and I was able to take a lot of notes during the review.

• Overall, the NSNA convention was a valuable experience for me, especially with graduation coming soon and my professional future as an RN soon to begin. This convention represented the importance of learning and leadership for both the school and my professional settings. I was even able to apply wisdom from one of the Plenary Session speakers to my current work situation as an Extern as well. I really appreciate that I had the opportunity to attend and I am very thankful to Owens Student Activities and NONA for making this happen for us!

Sincerely, Deborah Sullivan, Toledo Campus SNA Advisor Owens Community College

I sincerely appreciate the 2014 Nursing Excellence Award from NONA that was bestowed on me recently. Receiving recognition from one’s Peers and Colleagues is one of the highest honors of distinction that an individual can receive. It was particularly meaningful, because the nomination was submitted by Jane Schetter, a former graduate and undergraduate student. In her remarks, she identified the importance of Mentoring and the role I played in her development. She has indeed gone far in the profession, and has made significant contributions. I am so proud of her. As a professor of nursing of many, many years, I have always considered Mentoring as a most important role that I could provide to students. It is important that the next generation of the profession thrive and retain the values and standards we have fought so hard to retain, and pass on to the next generation. It was so rewarding to see so many of my former students in attendance at the occasion as well. That made the award, even more special. I was flabbergasted by the monetary gift that accompanied the

Certificate, as it was unexpected. As a result, I have decided to enter the 21th Century, and used it to purchase a Samsung 10.1 Tablet. As I learn to use and enjoy the Tablet, I shall remember from whence it came-spending a very special evening with lots of friends and colleagues in attendance. Thank you again for your consideration; I truly appreciate it. I’m sure that there are many more of our colleagues that are deserving, too.

Most Sincerely, Martha J Pituch Ph.D.,

RN ▲

I have received the award certificate in the mail and really appreciate this honor. It was such a lovely event and I was so proud to attend. Thank you to everyone involved in putting the evening together and for the

monetary gift. Sincerely,

Bethany Stork, ADN student, Northwest State

Community College ▲

I was searching for a way to send you a formal "Thank you letter" in the mail, but Lynne Zajack said to just email you. I just wanted to sincerely thank you, the Board of Directors, and the members of NONA for the recognition and the monetary gift I received. Since it was money that I did not expect to receive,

Thank you's cont. I "paid it forward" and donated the money to my brother and sister-in-law to help them with the costs of adopting a child. Thanks again!

Sincerely, Darby Birr, BSN student,

Thank you so much. I received the card and check. I was so surprised! I am a case manager at the VA Clinic in Toledo, and I happened to be aware of a veteran who was not yet enrolled in any VA care and was in DESPERATE need of a pair of glasses. I know that since he was just starting the application process, it could take 6 months to a year before he would actually get a pair of glasses, so I used the money to get him an eye exam and a new pair of glasses. He was so grateful. I told him that he could thank the Northwest Ohio Nurses Association! Again, thank you so much for selecting me for this award, I really appreciate it.

Thank you so much for a lovely evening and program yesterday. It was so interesting to see the accomplishments of others while celebrating new nurses also. I was completely shocked to receive the gift of money from NONA. I certainly was not expecting to receive anything!! I am very appreciative, though, as we currently have three children in college.
