Commission, and ESIC (Employee State Insurance Corporation).

The profession of nursing finds employment opportunities across the globe, supporting livelihoods in all cultures and age groups. This highly rewarding profession can have varied work environments ranging from a hospital to home health services. It is a flexible, hands-on profession.

In India, nursing is a profession largely chosen by women. However, male nurses are becoming more common. Kerala and Rajasthan churn out the largest number of male nurses at present. But the space for male nurses is still limited to those areas that require least interaction with patients, such as the ICU.

Eligibility NormsThe candidates aspiring for an undergraduate course in nursing should have passed 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry and Biology. According to Indian Nursing Council’s criteria for a BSc degree course in nursing, the subject combination should include English as core or elective with an aggregate of at least 45% marks.

However, AIIMS-like institutes have laid down 55% aggregate marks in PCB and English at 10+2 or equivalent exam with a relaxation of 5% for eligible categories. The admission is gained through Entrance Examination conducted annually by the institute.

The minimum age requirement is 17 years as on the 31st of December of the year of admission. Those who appeared for the qualifying examination or awaiting result can also apply. But the proof of having passed the exam will

have to be submitted within five days of declaration of the entrance examina-tion result.

For BSc (Hons.) Nursing course, at AIMS and six AIMS-like institutions, only women candidates are eligible.

Course StructureA typical BSc degree course is completed in four years. The theoretical con-cepts are imbibed in a student through practical learning. The undergradu-ate degree focuses on providing basic knowledge in nursing, first-aid and midwifery.

At AIIMS the first year programme focuses on subjects like, anatomy, physiology, biochemistry and nutrition. The course evolves into specialised modules in orthopaedics, gynaecology, ENT, ophthalmology and applied pharmacology in the later years of the course. During the four years, clinical training forms a vital element of the learning process. Every student gets to experience procedures in diverse clinical areas on a rotation-basis.

The course modules in Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing form a major part of the subjects studied in the sixth semester at Delhi University besides other subjects.

SELECTING THE RIGHT INSTITUTE

India Nursing Council, an autonomous body, defines guidelines for the training of nurses and related professionals in health sector in

the country. It claims “to establish and moni-tor a uniform standard of nursing education for nurses, midwife, Auxiliary Nurse-Midwives and health visitors by doing inspection of the institutions”. A student must research whether the institute abides by the norms laid down by the council.

There are over 1300 colleges offering BSc Nursing in the country. So choose your college carefully. The academic excellence of the insti-tute can be judged by its robust research. Some renowned institutes like, AIIMS New Delhi and Armed Forces Medical College, Pune are known to maintain these high standards in patient care and education through their undergraduate and postgraduate courses.

SELECT AN INSTITUTE THAT OFFERS FACILITIES TO RESEARCH AND EXPERIENCE DIFFERENT AREAS OF SPECIALISATION...

You can opt for a four-year BSc (Nursing) or a three-year probationary nursing course conducted at various hospitals run by the Armed Forces. You would be required to sign a bond to serve in the Military Nursing Services for five years or four years respectively. The plus point is that you will be given free ration, furnished accommodation, uniform allowance and monthly sti-pend during training.

The hands-on profession of nursing requires working across various depart-ments in a hospital. Select an institute that offers facilities to research and experience different areas of specialisation. “In OT and ICU, nurses should have the mental ability to correlate the whole body while the focus is on a part of the body, physical co-ordination and multi-tasking,” says Dr. Dinesh Batra, CEO, Primus Super Specialty Hospital, New Delhi.

Higher StudiesYou can study further by opting for a 2-year MSc in Nursing. Some continue to do an MPhil or PhD but it is not very common in India. Doing post- basic speciality diploma courses is more common along with continuing pro-grammes.

At postgraduate level, you can specialise by pursuing a two-year Auxiliary Nurse & Midwife course. As per WHO research report, lack of skilled mid-wives is a major roadblock to providing safe healthcare facilities to rural women.

The National Institute of Mental Health and Neurological Sciences (NIM-HANS), based in Bangalore, offers specialisation in psychiatric nursing and neurosurgical nursing.

JOB PROSPECTS

Plenty of job opportunities exist in public and private health set-ups for qualified nurses. “With healthcare growing on a

regular basis, there is huge gap in the number of nurses available, nursing is an ideal profession for people with a passion,” says Dr. Batra.

Military Nursing Services (MNS) is one of the most sought after public sector jobs for BSc degree holders. As many as 200 vacancies were announced in the year 2012 for recruitment to Short service Commissioned Officers in the MNS. Nurses are employed in the medical wing of Army, Navy, Air Force and Border Security Force. In addition, nurses are recruited in large numbers by Indian Railways for their hospitals across the country.

The Indian Nursing Council is the regulatory body in the country. To be able to practice, you

need to be registered with the Council by passing courses which are decided by the council.

A lucrative option is to find jobs abroad. US, UK, Canada, Australia and the Gulf countries are major destinations for Indian nurses, thanks to excel-lent remuneration and work environment. Nursing can also be taken up as a teaching profession.

Job ResponsibilitiesNursing profession requires you to work with selfless devotion, compassion, placing patients’ requirements over personal needs. It involves providing nursing care to patients with medical and surgical needs at the hospital. An undergraduate degree holder is also trained as a midwife to give supervisory attention to women during pregnancy, labour and postpartum period. “While working with the sick, always remember money and your own needs are sec-ondary, the patient comes first,” said Anitha Sreedharan, Sister-in-charge, Primus. Emerging fields in nursing include trauma nursing, home nursing and travel nursing. These roles offer varied job environments related to diverse cultural backgrounds of patients they attend to.

Earning PotentialIn India, nurses in government sector get more salary compared to private hospitals. “With the 6th Pay Commission revision, a nurse with no work experience would receive a starting salary of Rs. 32,000 plus free accom-modation and medical benefits,” shares Lt Col Saravjeet Kaur, Director, Nursing, Pan Max. In a private hospital a nurse can expect approximately Rs. 10,000 to Rs. 12,000 to begin with. But as you prove your calibre, the growth in the private sector increases. Salary packages abroad are substantially higher. In the US, nurses receive $2,000 to $10,000 as signing bonus. After one year of experience you get $17 per hour plus premium of $2 per hour for evening shifts and $3 for night shifts.

INDUSTRY TALK

Lt Col Saravjeet KaurDirector, Nursing, Pan Max. 32 years in the nursing profession

Q. What is your advice to nursing students?A. Nurses need to take care of their own health; many miss meals and don’t even stop to have a glass of water during their duty hours. Don’t do that, you can provide the best to your patients when you are healthy and fit. When your patient goes home happily, this is your Diwali, this is your Christmas.

Q. What should new nurses keep in mind?A. You need to be open to learning everyday and be aware of legal issues, registration and certification. Just remember, if you can’t do right, don’t do anything wrong as part of your job either. Give respect to all your patients and follow basic etiquette such as saying sorry and thank you. Also, be part of the Trained Nurses Association of India.

Q. What is the nursing scenario today?A. Practical knowledge is lacking in nurses today, it is important that the curriculum being offered gives nursing students the right blend of theory and practical training.

Q. Has the outlook towards nurses changed over the years?A. Patients have become more demanding, which has both positive and nega-tive aspects. Nurses do not have to be submissive. But remember the rules of discipline and protocol. Your focal point is your patient and doctors can be wrong too. If you feel that the medication dose is wrong, say so and do not keep it to yourself. You have received training, so just follow your instincts.
