    Activities of the Superior General

    General Curia

    May 2014

During the month of May, Father Gregory Gay, CM, concludedthe visitation of the Eastern Province of the United States and was

able to rest for a day in a beach house that is the property of theProvince. When he returned to Rome he began two intensive days of

meetings with the General Council. He then traveled to Paris to meetwith the Missionaries from various provinces who were participatingin a workshop on missiology that was sponsored by the CIF. Later, inthe house located on the Rue du Bac, he visited a group of Daughtersof Charity (all of whom were 40 years or more in vocation andrepresenting each of the continents), who were participating in acontinuing formation workshop. Father celebrated the Eucharist forthem and then dialogued with them during which time he offeredsome suggestions that could help them in their service on behalf of

the poor who are found in every one of their provinces. After this activity in Paris, Father then traveled to Germany

where he was received by the confreres from the city of Lippstadt. There he met with the members of the Provincial Council andengaged in personal dialogue with the Missionaries. Two young

confreres (from the Philippine Province and from the Indonesian Province) are studying German andFather Gregory had the opportunity to meet with them. At the same time Father was able to visit with thefourteen confreres from Northern and Southern India who are working in various dioceses in Germany.Father Gregory visited them in the places where they are living and because of the special services thatthese confreres are providing they are living in either houses or separate apartments. After speaking withthem individually Father met with the whole group and the Missionaries were able to express their

concerns. They spoke about sharing their Vincentian vocation in the midst of the specific context of theGerman Province, under conditions thatare not the same as those of their place oforigin. Father Gregory felt that theconfreres are living very simple lives andare committed to ministry in thatprovince.

Father spent a weekend in theProvince of Austria, visiting the Missionaries there. In Vienna he participated in various activities. OnMonday, May 26th, Father was able to participate in the General Assembly of the Brothers of Our Lady ofMercy, members of the Vincentian Family who have Saint Vincent de Paul as their patron.

Upon his return to Rome, Father Gregory participated in the 83rd Assembly of the Union ofSuperiors General, May 28-30. During that meeting the group reflected on the dialogue that they had had

with Pope Francis during their previous Assembly and also spoke about their contribution to Synod ofBishops which will deal with the theme of the family.

240 young men and women! That is not just a number but is a visible sign that the young menand women are serious about their commitment to follow Jesus Christ (and to follow Jesus according tothe model that Saint Vincent and Saint Louise place before them). The enthusiasm and joy and vitalityof these young men and women also provide much encouragement to the respective branches of the

Vincentian Family in which they are members. At the same time the fact that so many persons

participated in this First Convention is also a sign that these young men and women want to give aChristian and Vincentian meaning to their life.

This experience has enabled us to recognize the joy and the hope that Christ, always young andrenewed, continues to bestow upon the youth of our communities. May the young men and women ofour communities continue to hear the Lord calling them and may these young people respond to thatcall with enthusiasm and generosity.

THE SAINT VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY IN MONGOLIA

    http://es.ssvpglobal.org/SSVP-en-el-mundo/La-SSVP-en-Mongolia

Only recently has the Saint Vincent de PaulSociety been established in Mongolia. In 2005 it wasestabliished in Oulan-Bator by a group of layCatholics who came there from neighboring Korea.

According to Mr. In-Chul, President of theDiocesan Council of Suwom of the Saint VincentdePaul Society, Helena Kwon, a Korean resident inMongolia and some members of the Saint Vincent de

Paul Scoeity in Korea (among whom were Mr.Anthony and Ms. Maria) met together in order tocreate the first Conference.

Since that time, Mr. Anthony, a professor atthe National University of Mongolia and Ms. Helena Kowon have translatedthe prayers and themanual of the Society from Korean into the language of the people in Mangolia. Numerouspeople from Korea have offered counsel and helped the group organize local meetings and theirministry of home visitation.

In April, 2011, when her term of office came to an end, Helena Kwon encouraged thepeople to elect a new president. On that occasion a new leadership team, all from Mongolia, wereelected and those members from Korea who had held leadership position, then became associatesin the Society.

At the present time there are eleven (11) members in the society, all from Mongolia. Themembers meet together each Friday. The primary activities of this group include:

Providing meals for a group of students: they are given enough food to eat for a week and itshould be noted that most of the students come from poor families. Every day after schoolthese students come to the center of the Society day and there the volunteers help them withtheir studies.

Food service at a dump/landfill: even though Mongolia is a developed country many peoplehave no housing and are living in the midst of a public dump/landfill. Every Saturday themembers of the Society offer food to these people. At the same time they are able to pray

together with the people there and enter into dialogue with them. Home visits: the volunteers visit poor families

once or twice a month and the majority of thesefamilies are single-parent households. The

volunteers offer food to these families and praytogether with them.

Prison visits: once a month the volunteers visitthe local prison.

English and Korean classes: every Saturday theseclasses are offered

Transportation to school: many children are

unable to go to school because the cost oftransportation is very high, the Society providesmoney to these children each week so that they
