aking the combined degree programs saves students times andmoney however they are considerably harder to complete. Osteopa-

thy is one o the most comprehensive types o health care availablein the world. Its essence lies in examining and treating the wholeperson, not just presenting symptoms.

Te practice o osteopathy includes using the most current scien-tific knowledge to promote health and prevention and to diagnoseand treat patients with disease. Osteopaths use their hands as toolsto diagnose and treat patients.

Te philosophy o osteopathy originated rom the teachings o Dr.

Andrew aylor Still over 138 years ago and is based on the beliesthat, given the optimum conditions, the human body has the amaz-ing ability to heal, that the structure o the human body is directlyrelated to the unction, and that the health o the individual isrelated to the body, mind, and spirit.

As a NUMSS student, you are strongly taught to gain insight intoyour patient's health care needs by looking beyond the symptomso disease in the person in ront o you and discovering the causethat impact him or her.

From the first day o school, we emphasize the interpersonal con-text in which osteopathy will be practiced. We plan our curriculumto emphasize thinking like a doctor rom day one. Te primarypatient care skills are complemented by our integrated approach tobiomedical knowledge that introduces both basic and clinical sci-ences in your first two years.

By learning these subjects in tandem, rather than one ollowed bythe other, the abstraction o science becomes tangible by its applica-tion in practice.

Oseopahy:

Orthopedic rehabilitation is a orm o manual therapy that treats a large variety o conditions that affect the musculoskeletal system. reatment is adminis-tered through one-on-one care between a health practitioner such as an osteopath, chiropractor, physiotherapist, naturopath, & athletic therapist who spe-cialized in orthopaedics to become an orthopaedist, and patient, to better fit the patient’s specific needs. Tese orthopedists are trained to treat the entirebody, and the length & type o therapy needed depends greatly on the severity o the patient’s injuries.

Injuries such as neck and back pain, or shoulder tendinitis, can be treated with orthopedic rehabilitation, along with carpal tunnel syndrome, knee andankle sprains and hip pains. Orthopedic rehabilitation is ofen needed post surgery to aid in the healing process or patients who have had a spinal usion, total hip or knee replacement, and ankle reconstructions. Other conditions that may require surgery in conjunction with orthopedic rehabilitation arecomplete shoulder replacements, laminectomies, rotator cuff repairs, and meniscectomies.

An orthopedist will evaluate the patient during the first initial office visit to determine the patient’s range o motion, his posture, and how much he orshe can unction when moving. Te orthopaedist will discuss the levels o pain the patient may be experiencing, along with how much strength is presentaround the injured area. Afer the evaluation, the orthopedist will develop a personal treatment plan based on the patient’s specific needs, and the patientwill then go through orthopedic rehabilitation.
