TECHNOLOGY AND RESEARCH TO HELP US GROW
It is thanks to the commitment of the four founding families, Bertoli, Giacomelli, Marinelli and Zanetti, that Metra has been able to grow steadily for the last forty years, with reference to both the building division and the industrial division. The overall sales fi gure grew once again in 2004, to 212 million Euros, up 3% from the 206 million of the previous year, or to 245 million, if the Canadian subsidiary is included. The fi gure referred to the Group’s production is signifi cant, up from 50,250 tonnes to 51,765 tonnes (or 62,845 tonnes with the Canadian plant).Investments. Metra has now become big enough to compete with the large international groups, above all with regard to investments (which almost doubled in 2004: from 13 million to 25 million), the Company has made some strategic choices. The most recent purchase, a 6,050-tonne maxipress, enabled it to enter the transport market by right: trains, motorcars and recently even aircraft, winning prestige contracts.Logistics. Metra is making signifi cant changes to its system, transforming the current Metra Systems centres (of which there are 12 distributed throughout Italy) into platforms for distribution, technical assistance and sales development. To support all this, the project calls for the creation of the four logistic poles of Brescia, Pavia, Trani and Ragusa, some of which have already been created or started up. Problem solving. Designers and architects fi nd at Metra the skills and fl exibility needed to develop all sorts of ideas. The company is able to provide adequate support for tackling complex problems. The future. For Metra, paying attention to the market means being able to direct its strategic choices fl exibly, grasping the signs of innovation and giving itself the right structure to become a leading player.
METRA AT CONGRESSES: BIMEC IN MILAN AND ALUMOTIVE IN MODENA
BiMec, 5th-8th October 2005. Metra will be exhibiting its products at the fi rst BiMec, the biennial mechanics and automation exhibition (Hall 12, Stand F 12) and is promoting, with the publication m&a, Meccanica & Automazione, the conference “Extruded Aluminium: a Competitive Edge. The strategic choice of materials as a strong point for European industry” (Wednesday, 5th October, Milan Fair, Palazzo Cisi, Pontremoli Hall, from 2.00 p.m. to 5.00 p.m.). The coupon for registering is on page 4.
Alumotive, 20th-22nd October 2005. After the successes recorded at the fi rst event (272 exhibitors, an exhibition surface area of over 8,000 square metres, 7,621 professional visitors, 360 supporter companies), Alumotive has now found its natural venue at the Fair in Modena, the cradle of international excellence in the automotive fi eld. This means that the most infl uential Italian and foreign manufacturers of components made of aluminium and technological materials for bicycles, motorcycles, motor-cars, commercial and industrial vehicles and public transport vehicles will be on parade there, with the producers of applications in the shipping, aeronautical and aerospace industries, of technology for very high precision machining, of machinery and products for welding and fi nishing aluminium, and of modelling and engineering. All in all, the cream of sub-contracting and advanced research in this fi eld. Metra could not fail to be there, at Stand A7 in Hall B. In the framework of the meeting “Aluminium in the collective cell”, on Thursday, 20th October, starting at 11.00 a.m. in Hall C4, the company will also present a contribution with the title “aluminium extrusions in rail carbodies: from the project to the product”.
miglie fondatrici, Bertoli, Gia-
comelli, Marinelli e Zanetti, che
Metra da oltre quarant’anni ha
potuto crescere con continuità,
sia per quanto riguarda la
divisione edilizia che quella
industriale.
Anche per il 2004 il fatturato
complessivo presenta un
segno positivo: 212 milioni
di Euro, in crescita del 3%
rispetto ai 206 milioni
dell’anno precedente, che
diventano 245 milioni se si
considera anche la consociata
canadese Altex. Significativo
il dato relativo alla pro-
duzione del Gruppo, che
è passata da 50.250 ton-
nellate a 51.765 tonnellate
(62.845 tonnellate con lo
stabilimento canadese).
aggiudicandosi commesse prestigiose.
La logistica. La competitività a livello
internazionale si sta giocando anche sul
fronte della logistica e della distribuzione.
Metra sta rivoluzionando il proprio
sistema trasformando gli attuali Centri
di Metra Sistemi (in tutto 12 distribuiti
sul territorio Nazionale) in piattaforme
distributive, assistenza tecnica e svilup-
po commerciale. A supporto di tutto que-
sto, il progetto prevede la realizzazione,
in parte già avvenuta o avviata, dei quat-
tro Poli logistici di Brescia, Pavia,
Trani e Ragusa. A Brescia il progetto
pilota è già realtà: un nuovo capannone
di 5 mila metri quadrati è operativo da
più di due mesi. Pavia e Trani, in parte
già operativi saranno realtà da Settem-
bre 2005, mentre per fi ne anno è previsto
l’avvio del Polo logistico di Ragusa.
Problem solving. Progettisti e ar-
chitetti trovano in Metra le competenze
e la fl essibilità necessarie per sviluppare
qualsiasi idea. L’Azienda è infatti in
grado di offrire un supporto adeguato
per affrontare problematiche complesse.
L’esperienza nella progettazione edilizia
ed in ambito industriale forniscono un
valido supporto alla realizzazione di
soluzioni ad hoc.
Il futuro. L’attenzione al mercato si tra-
duce per Metra nella capacità di orientare
le proprie scelte strategiche con fl essibilità,
cogliendo i segnali di innovazione e
strutturandosi per essere un attore di
primo piano. In questo senso la storia
ha dato ragione al gruppo fondatore
dell’Azienda ed alla seconda generazione
oggi alla guida del gruppo. E’ già il mo-
mento della terza generazione che si sta
preparando per affrontare nuove sfi de
competitive.

SOLAR TECHNOLOGY
VACUUM-PIPE SOLAR COLLECTOR
Thanks to the experience acquired in the fi eld
of solar photovoltaic and heat-production
applications, Schott is one of the best-known
companies when it comes to applications for
solar technology. It is no coincidence that it is
among the leading manufacturers worldwide
of special glass pipes. The system presented
here is the innovative vacuum-pipe solar
collector, manufactured in series in a fully
automated system. The mechanical parts are
made of extruded aluminium, making the
system naturally light (it weighs only 20 kg)
and therefore easy to handle, facilitating the

THE ALUPROGETTO AWARD: THE NEW
FRONTIERS OF DESIGN WITH ALUMINIUM
In recent years, the increasing number of
structural applications for light alloys has
shown the extreme versatility of aluminium
and the possibilities for using it in various
different industrial sectors (from construction
work to the worlds of transport, interior
decoration and urban furniture), even though
– at least in our country – it has not yet
become as widespread as it could be. It is
with this in mind that the Aluprogetto Award
has been created, with the aim of providing
important food for thought for the design
community, highlighting the technical potential
and construction solutions that qualify this
material for the structural uses for which it is
best suited.
The award is part of the Aluprogetto initiative,
a special cultural and information event to be
held at the next Metef (17th-20th May 2006),
characterised by its forum-like structure,
at which interesting case-histories will be
presented as well as the Aluprogetto Award
and the associated iconographic exhibition.
Its promoters could hardly fail to include
Metra, which has always been committed to
setting off and promoting new uses for this
light alloy. This activity has involved Metra in
two capacities: on the planning side, it is in the
organising committee of the Award, and it will
also play a direct role as a member of the panel
examining the entries.
Aims
The international award will be announced
by Edimet under the auspices of prestige
organisations and associations, and will be
assigned to the best work characterised
by an aluminium structure (made entirely
or prevalently of this metal) in each of the
following fi elds:
- bridges and walkways;
- civil and industrial structures: buildings,
sheds, hangars, stairs, platforms, cladding for
self-supporting façades;
- mobile structures for temporary use;
- urban furniture having a structural value.
The Panel
The members of the examining panel will be
specialised professionals.
How to take part
Entry is open to Italian and foreign individual
or associated designers (engineers or
architects) who have designed works already
“built”, with no time limits.
There is no charge for entries, and applications
must be made by the designer of the project.

Negli ultimi anni l’incremento
delle applicazioni strutturali
delle leghe leggere ha dimostrato
l’estrema versatilità e le pos-
sibilità di utilizzo dell’alluminio
in diversi settori industriali (dal
mondo delle costruzioni a quello
dei trasporti, dall’arredamento
all’arredo urbano), anche se nel
campo civile la loro diffusione
- almeno nel nostro paese - non ha
ancora raggiunto il proprio svi-
luppo potenziale. In quest’ottica si
inserisce l’istituzione del Premio
Aluprogetto Award, un’iniziativa
che mira a fornire al mondo della
progettazione importanti spunti di
rifl essione, evidenziando potenzialità
tecniche e soluzioni costruttive
che qualifi cano il materiale per
gli impieghi strutturali ai quali è
maggiormente votato.
L’iniziativa si inserisce nell’ambito
di Aluprogetto, uno speciale con-
tenitore culturale-informativo che
prenderà vita durante la prossima
edizione di Metef (17-20 maggio
2006) e che si caratterizza per la
sua articolazione in un forum in
cui verranno presentate interes-
santi case-histories, il Premio
Aluprogetto Award e la relativa
mostra iconografi ca.
Tra i promotori dell’evento non
poteva mancare Metra, da sempre
impegnata nella valorizzazione e
promozione dei nuovi impieghi
della lega leggera. Un’attività che
ha interessato l’Azienda a un du-
plice livello: sia in sede progettuale
con il coinvolgimento nel comitato
organizzativo del Premio, sia a
livello di partecipazione diretta in
qualità di membro della giuria
esaminatrice.
Gli obiettivi
Il Premio, di carattere internazio-
nale è bandito da Edimet con il
patrocino di prestigiosi enti e as-
sociazioni e si propone di decretare
la migliore opera caratterizzata
da una struttura in alluminio (in
tutto o in parte prevalente) per
ognuna delle seguenti sezioni:
- ponti e passerelle;
- strutture civili e industriali:
edifi ci, capannoni, hangar, scale,
piattaforme, involucri di facciata
autoportanti;
- strutture mobili per usi tempo-
ranei;

COMPAL INVESTS IN RAILWAYS
Constant investments, extreme specialisation
and proven experience are the underlying
factors of the philosophy of Compal, the
company of the Metra Group specialised in
machining. This approach has led over the
years to the acquisition of state-of-the-art
equipment, stimulating constant up-dating
of the technology and in-depth investigation
of the specifi c problems connected with
machining aluminium sections.
Thanks to its strategy based on continuous
adaptation to market demands, Compal has
thus reached undisputed levels of precision in
the fi eld of machining of aluminium extrusions
for industrial use.
In order to meet the needs of the mechanical
fi eld in general and that of transport,
Compal has now equipped its plant with a
new automatic work centre for machining
aluminium extrusions up to 16 metres long.
The investment made in order to purchase
this new machinery also fi ts in perfectly with
the up-grading policy undertaken by Metra
in the fi eld of large sections. This strategic
approach led also to the installation of the
6,050-tonne press, and the recent jobs in
the railway and aeronautical fi elds (from
the supplies for the Trenes Modulares to the
Naples “Circumvesuviana” and the Airbus
A380) bear witness to the Company’s ability
to interpret in the best possible way the needs
expressed by these industries, providing the
most satisfactory answers.
The new facility
Following an investment of over 500,000
Euros, in November of last year. Compal
installed the new 5-axis CNC work centre. It
is a system with a mobile portal and swinging
workstations that enables complex machining
of extruded bars with large cross-sections and
lengths varying up to a maximum of 16 metres.
This new equipment is ideal for machining
large sections (up to 600 mm in width and
400 mm in height) to be used, for example, in
the construction of trams or low-frequency
trains. It is the optimum tool for complex
machining requiring a tough and reliable plant-
engineering structure.
The new centre offers many advantages,
therefore, enabling tool-changing and
machining times to be cut to a minimum and
providing at the same time great fl exibility
in terms of the type of machining that can be
carried out, great reliability and stability, in
addition to extreme safety for the operator.
Compal investe nel ferroviarioCostanti investimenti, estrema
specializzazione ed una collaudata
esperienza sono i fattori alla base
della fi losofi a Compal, l’azienda
del Gruppo Metra specializzata
nelle lavorazioni meccaniche. Un
orientamento questo che ha portato negli
anni all’acquisizione di attrezza-
in alluminio di lunghezza fi no a
16 metri.
L’investimento effettuato per l’acqui-
sizione del nuovo macchinario
rappresenta inoltre una perfetta
integrazione alla politica di po-
tenziamento intrapresa dal Grup-
po Metra nell’ambito dei profi la-
ti di grandi dimensioni. Un orien-
tamento strategico che ha porta-
to all’installazione della pressa da
6.050 t, di cui le più recenti com-
messe nel ferroviario
e nell’aeronautica
(dalla fornitura per i
Trenes Modulares spa-
gnoli, alla Circumve-
suviana di Napoli,
all’Airbus A380) te-
stimoniano la capa-
cità dell’Azienda di
leggere e interpretare
al meglio le necessità
espresse dal settore,
fornendo le risposte
più soddisfacenti.
Il nuovo impianto
A fronte di un investimento di ol-
tre 500.000 euro, lo scorso novem-
bre Compal ha installato il nuovo
centro di lavoro a 5 assi CNC, un
impianto a portale mobile con posta-
zioni in pendolare che permette di
eseguire lavorazioni complesse su
Esempio di tram leggero realizzato dall’azienda Bombardier
barre estruse di grande sezione e
lunghezza variabile fi no a un mas-
simo di 16 metri.
Ideale per la lavorazione di pro-
fi lati di grandi dimensioni (fi no a
l’operatore.
