Term 4 will be a busy time for U3A Darebin, as we

celebrate Seniors Week, move to an online membership

system and prepare for our Annual General Meeting.

Seniors Week. During Seniors Week in October, U3A

members across Victoria are taking part in a variety of

events to celebrate active ageing. At the Festival of

Learning at Federation Square on 4 October, U3A

Darebin will have an information booth, an exhibition of

work from the Needlecraft group and a Mah Jong table.

Our Line Dancing and Tai Chi groups will perform at the

Festival. During the first week of October, members’ art

works will be shown at the Art Exhibition at Queens Hall,

Parliament House. The Exhibition commemorates and

celebrates 30 years of U3A in Victoria.

There are also numerous activities in local areas. Check

out the full range of social, cultural, educational and

healthy living activities at seniorsonline.vic.gov.au, or

pick up a Festival booklet at our office.

Celebrations in Darebin. Members are participating in

the ‘Reservoir Village Seniors’ Festival Day’ on

Thursday 8 October in the Edwardes St., Reservoir area.

Our Line Dancing and Tai-Chi groups will be performing

and the Needlecraft group will display their work. We

will have an information table in the street to inform

passers-by of our activities.

On Friday 16 October, Darebin Council is holding a

Seniors’ Expo, Darebin Arts and Entertainment Centre,

cnr. Bell St. and St. Georges Road from 10am to 2.30pm.

The day starts with a Tango Dancing concert.

Afterwards, in the area beside the concert hall, U3A

Darebin will have an information table, along with other

organisations relevant to seniors. There will also be talks

on topics of interest to seniors.

Online membership system. Preparation for our new online system for 2016 membership and class

enrolments is well advanced. In ‘News from the Committee’ (below), you’ll find further information.

Annual General Meeting. A date for your diary. Our end of year celebration and AGM is on Tuesday, 1

December at the Fairfield RSL. We hope to see you there. Further details closer to the time.

Member profile

Maria Pintos-Lopez

In the Needlecraft group, Maria’s ability as a knitter is

well known. She knits prolifically for grandchildren,

friends and KOGO (Knit One Give One), and contributes a

lot to the general class chatter in her cheerful and

friendly way.

Less well known is her passion for writing, which began

when she was 13. Writing in her native Spanish, she

wrote short stories for the second of three books

produced by artsACT in Canberra in 1995. In the book,

‘Bridges’, published by Encuentro Inc., Maria’s stories

were brought to life by artists using hand movements to

illustrate the characters and events captured in the

stories. They have now been translated into English.

Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Maria was the third of five children. Her father came from a poor family

in the mountains of Spain, but fell in love with the sea after travelling there alone at age 13. He never

looked back. Later, he married in Argentina and set up a highly successful glass factory, enabling his family

to live an easy life and his children to attend private schools. Maria went to university and obtained a BA

in Social Work. Her father had to return to Spain to do his military service. He was in the last group to

swear loyalty to the King of Spain.

In 1968, Maria’s sister-in-law, living in Canberra, persuaded Maria and her husband and son to visit

Australia. They planned to come for three years but the three years stretched to 1982, during which time,

a second son was born. The family returned to Argentina but the tough living conditions under a

dictatorship rule drove them back to Canberra three years later. While there, Maria worked as a social

worker in child protection and foster care and gained a Diploma in Translating. Later, she moved to

Melbourne to be near one of her two lawyer sons and her adored grandchildren. When she first arrived in

Australia, Maria found it difficult to adjust to a different culture and lifestyle but now finds it easy,

compared with the lifestyle in Argentina.

Maria joined U3A Darebin for the companionship. She enjoys the Needlecraft group, but still hopes a

Writing Skills class will be offered so she can practice and expand her writing interests and abilities.

News from the Committee

A new online membership system

In the first week of November, all members will receive detailed information about procedures for

renewing their membership and applying for classes for 2016. Here is advance notice of how it will work.

There will be three ways of enrolling – online through our website; posting or delivering your completed

membership renewal and class choices application form to the office as in the past; or coming to the office

on specific days to be guided through the renewal and application process by a volunteer.

We want to assure members that there is no advantage or disadvantage in choosing any of the three ways

listed above. In early December, all membership data, whether in print or electronic form, will be entered

in our new system. Finalisation of classes won’t occur until early January 2016 and as in the past, this will

be done on the basis of order of receipt of your membership application (print or electronic) and your


choice of classes (that is, choices at the top of everyone’s list are given more importance than those further

down their list). Volunteers are given preference over non-volunteers and full members preference over

associate and other membership categories. This may sound complicated but it’s a process worked out

over the years, which we think is as fair as one can get and seems to work well.

The online system will also make allocation of members to classes much easier and it will mean that our

busy volunteers and office staff will have a break over Christmas and early January.

Ideas from the U3A Network Conference

In August, a number of Committee members and general members attended sessions of a two-day U3A

Network Victoria Conference. They described the conference as generally lively and informative. The first

day emphasised older people’s contributions to their communities, and the vital place of U3As. The second

day focused on future opportunities for U3As, the value of online resources, using social media, and the

mutual benefits of organised activities that bring older people and younger people together.

At the August Committee meeting, it was agreed that in 2016, we set up a forward planning group for U3A

Darebin, especially around how technology and internet resources could enhance our classes and provide

more learning opportunities. If you would like to be part of this group, please speak to a member of the

Committee or contact the office. We would welcome your ideas and expertise.

U3A Darebin games groups

Games which challenge our brains and provide fun and social interaction have been part of human history

for hundreds and in some cases thousands of years. Here are reports from our current games groups.

Canasta. We are a small, friendly group which meets

on the 2nd and 4th Saturday of the month, from 1.30-

4.00 at the Fairfield Station classroom. We enjoy each

others’ company, with lots of chatter, laughter and a

cup of tea or coffee. We all have different levels of

experience and if you would like to join us but are

hesitating because you are a beginner – don’t worry,

we will teach you. The surprising twist to this game is

the unexpected bonus along the way. I find that years

of counting the value of cards in Canasta has helped

with my mental arithmetic ability! We’ve also

discussed playing other card games. Please come and

join us and have some fun.

Trivia and other Pursuits. When asked to

describe the Trivia and other Pursuits group,

members use words like ‘stimulating', 'thought

provoking', 'light-hearted' and 'welcoming'. The

group is self-directed; it doesn't have a

tutor/class leader. Members take responsibility

for preparing different class activities - a mixture

of quizzes, ‘20 questions’, ‘Hangman’, 'Who am I,

What am I, Where am I?’ and other word games.

Trivia members say they have a lot of fun; they

get satisfaction from doing 'homework' for

activities they prepare and they learn a lot along

the way, as one person put it, about ‘everything

from celery to phobias to famous people and

places'!

flat or vertical?

Dry ice is the solid form of which

chemical element?

Which musical term means to

increase gradually in loudness or

intensity?


Scrabble. As a reader and writer I have always had a

fascination for words. When I was in paid work I used

to play word games on my computer. I started playing

Scrabble on the computer but soon found it was too

easy to “cheat” and use “Google” solutions, not such a

bad thing if you want to learn words but not much use

if you want to use you own brain and think. So I looked

around for a Scrabble group to join. U3A Darebin was

easy to get to and being on a Monday it got me up and

thinking early in the week.

The group was in its early days when I joined two years

ago and while small, it has managed to maintain a

“core group” of players. We often help each other out

when struggling with “terrible letters”. However,

sometimes we get serious and determined and work

really hard to win a game. There is also time for a short

chat and coffee if we feel like it. Making a commitment

to Scrabble has definitely improved my “non-cheating”

game and introduced me to U3A.

We would like more members. We know that brain games are as good for us as physical exercise, so we

have been discussing the option of making our Scrabble days a Brain Game Morning where we offer

additional games to exercise our brains, such as the card game, 500. We are also thinking that a later start

might be in order as this really cold winter took its toll on the group and starting at 10.30 may be better. All

suggestions welcome!!!

We meet on the 2nd and 4th Monday of the month at East Preston Senior Citizens Centre, 10-12.

Mah Jong. The first thing I did after arriving in

Northcote in 2003 was to contact Darebin Council

to ask if there was a local Mah Jong group.

Unfortunately, at that time the answer was no.

Why Mah Jong you may ask? Well, many years ago,

I learned to play from my husband’s Japanese

clients and I so enjoyed this fascinating game that,

prior to moving to Northcote, I joined a group

which played at the Ashwood Community Centre.

Some years after moving to Northcote, when a

young man from the Council came to our house

and I mentioned Mah Jong, he showed me a U3A

brochure which listed it as one of their groups. The

rest, as they say, is history. After a number of most

enjoyable years playing with the U3A group,

Claudia moved away from Darebin and Nancy

retired, so I offered to keep Mah Jong going.

What is so fascinating about the game is the variety

of interesting ways or hands to play, which means

that we are always learning and that keeps the grey

cells active.

To my way of thinking, Mah Jong beats cards hands-

down The Canasta group may disagree! However, we

are a small group and we could do with some more

members. We meet on the 1st

and 3rd

Chess. The stories of the origins of chess are

many and varied. Russia, Persia, India, Tibet – of

the ancient known worlds, all have similar tales.

No one story is more or less true and correct

than any other. Who could ever prove the exact

origins? However, the contents of most stories

are principally of peaceful war, cunning,

challenge and mathematics.

Our chess group We all enjoyed a warm and cosy

winter term at the Donald Street, East Preston

Senior Citizens Centre and we are looking

forward to our next class on 6 October from 2pm

to 4pm.

If you join us, you’ll find friendship or company, a welcoming cuppa and friendly folk. Our chess group

gathering is fun and light-hearted; the chess is likewise. The venue is spacious and comfortable. Watch the

play or join in a game. We share our collective chess knowledge. Vladimir, our patient and encouraging

teacher, is a chess whiz of Russian origins. We socialise, play chess and observe as he presents and analyses

classic chess masters’ games.

Tutor profile: Adriana Ficarazzi

Languages have been Adriana’s life. Born in Trieste, the fourth largest city in the former Austro-Hungarian

empire and situated on the Adriatic sea in the far east of Northern Italy where it borders on Slovenia, she

grew up in a very stimulating environment. In her grandparents’ time, German and Italian were equally

taught and people were fluent in two or more languages. Her maternal grandfather was a sea captain who

spoke 7 languages fluently, while her paternal grandfather, a chemist, spoke 4 languages fluently. A feature

of Trieste that Adriana remembers clearly is La Bora, a very strong wind that sometimes blows in winter. It

is so powerful that people cannot walk in the street and even public transport is brought to a standstill.

She recalls that during the Second World War the British and Americans controlled Trieste. They liked the

city and treated its citizens with respect; it was a pleasant and easy place to live, but after the fall of

Mussolini in 1945 the Italian government changed all of that and people were encouraged to emigrate to

countries like the US and Australia. Adriana was married at 19 and arrived in Australia shortly afterwards.

She learnt English through a correspondence school

and took on a job with an insurance company,

working on their computer. But her love of

languages led her to compete for, and win, a

position as a bi-lingual teacher at Melbourne

University. She taught for three years in the country

but following the death of her husband, she

returned to teaching in Melbourne.

She is fluent in English, Italian, Spanish and

Portuguese and holds a BA in Modern Languages

and History from La Trobe University and a Diploma

of Education from Melbourne University. She has

been an oral examiner for Year 12 students and has

judged a poetry competition. Adriana says that

there are no Italian teachers with degrees anymore

because government money is spent on teaching

Asian languages instead.

Adriana recommended including a photo of Trieste,

rather than one of herself! This is the Piazza Unita

d’Italia, taken last year.


Ill-health eventually forced Adriana to quit working, but when someone suggested joining U3A she decided

to resume teaching Italian, this time at Banyule U3A (then Yarra Valley U3A) where she taught for 9 years.

Since joining U3A Darebin 6 years ago, she has taught Canasta, firstly with Claudia, and now teaches Italian.

She also enjoys the Singing for Pleasure and Art Appreciation classes at U3A Darebin.

A very busy life! And despite some difficult health issues, Adriana still finds time to travel around Australia

and to find pleasure in her home and garden.

Current Affairs class speaker

On 27 August, the Current Affairs class welcomed Anthony Carbines, MLA for Ivanhoe. We looked at

Ivanhoe’s electoral boundaries and the diverse demographics of this state seat. Ivanhoe is indeed one of

the most interesting of Victoria’s electorates.

Most of the session was devoted to talking about Victoria’s future infrastructure and plans for the

development of a new satellite city in the west. Listening to questions raised by class members, I

understood their concern about public transport issues – this topic took up about 75 per cent of our time!

It was indeed an enthralling session and we thank Anthony for his time and expertise. We would welcome

him back in the future – I think that he enjoyed the experience of talking with us.

Rita is a qualified Languages

and ESL teacher. Czech is her

native tongue.

Are you looking for a challenge? Would the Czech language appeal to you?

This language is spoken by people in the Czech Republic, which has the

beautiful capital city of Prague, also called the City of a hundred turrets. In

this introductory course, you can learn how to greet people and introduce

yourself; write personal details, talk about yourself, express like and dislikes,

write a postcard, engage in simple conversation and learn about Czech

culture.

Vladimir is interested in meeting with others to sketch and share ideas.

Online learning resources

At the U3A Network Conference in August, speakers raised questions about what U3As might look like in a

few years time, with rapid change in technologies. We often complain about how fast life is nowadays and

how constant change can wear you down, but the new opportunities that technology offers may have

some fascinating possibilities for our organisation.

Figures on internet use among seniors are high and increasing every year. Even if you don’t use a

computer or an I-Pad, we can all appreciate that videos and online lectures can be great learning

resources. There are now many sites which hold hundreds and thousands of films, videos, talks, lectures


and discussion material online. Below are some examples:

thing about U3A is meeting people with a range of interests, talking together and exchanging ideas. It

could be very rewarding to use the sites and the material as a catalyst for discussion and understanding in

a group. Or we could use DVDs about a range of topics from the history of Egypt, to the night sky, or

health nutrition. If you are interested in any of these ideas and would like to join a group to talk further

KOORIE NIGHT MARKETS

Market Inc

Research shows that when Indigenous people are more

connected to their culture and community, greater social,

economic and health outcomes are gained. For Indigenous

people, art expresses all aspects of life and identify and is key

to passing on culture to future generations. Reviving,

practising and sharing traditional arts is a vital part of

reclaiming and maintaining indigenous identity and creating

sustainable communities for Indigenous people in Victoria and

Koorie Night Market’s continued growth is testament to this.

STROKES

A stroke happens when the supply of blood to the brain is

suddenly interrupted. Some strokes are fatal while others

cause permanent or temporary disability. The longer the

stroke remains untreated, the higher the chance of

permanent brain damage. A volunteer speaker from the

Stroke Foundation will give information about stroke

awareness and prevention – what signs and symptoms to look

for and what to do if you or someone else has a stroke.

Afghan Women’s Stories

Onnie Wilson was the speaker at the First Tuesday Talk in September. When Onnie first went to

Afghanistan in the 1970s, she loved the country and its people. So much has happened since then,

changing it from a progressive, functioning society to the ‘basket case’ it is today. The country has been

severely affected by waves of wars and bombing, which still continue. Women have suffered dreadfully

as extremist religious groups took over. They were forbidden to leave the house without a male family

member, blocked from receiving any education or working and generally treated appallingly in

numerous ways.

Women’s International Solidarity Australia (WISA) and the Afghanistan Women’s Organisation Victoria

(AWOV) provide financial aid for development projects. They work in partnership with locals to change

the lives of women and children in Afghanistan by providing education, safe environments such as

fenced gardens, and work opportunities such as sewing which can be done at home. AWOV also

supports Afghani women who have come to Melbourne as they settle into their new environment.

Onnie’s talk was informative and inspiring, if harrowing.

Great Australian Story

U3A Network Victoria has asked all U3As to let their members know about ‘Great Australian Story’. This is a

site which aims to be a valuable resource for people interested in Australia, its history and our way of life. It

plans to build a picture of who we are by collecting short stories (350 to 1800 words) about people’s

personal experiences written in their own words. If you are interested, want to know more, or would like

to read some of the stories already collected, contact them directly at info@greataustralian story.com.au.


Conversation Club

Are you interested in joining a conversation club to talk with new immigrants? Jim Shnookal, a teacher at

Melbourne Polytechnic (previously Northern Metropolitan Institute of TAFE) contacted us about a

conversation club he would like to set up at the Preston campus for his class of new immigrants. Many of

his students have found it difficult to meet Australian people in the community. He sees the club as a way

for new arrivals and volunteers to share experiences and learn about Australian and other cultures and for

his students to develop connections in the community and improve their English language skills.

Jim is thinking of a fortnightly or monthly meeting for an hour or two, preferably at Preston but this could

IMPROVE YOUR DIGITAL LITERACY: iPAD and SKYPE

PRACE is running a 10 session course in Term 4

Remembering Glen Evans

Glen was a tutor in Learning and Remembering at U3A Darebin in 2013. He passed away in August 2014. I

thought that members of his class and others who knew him might be interested in the following.

In his recent book Effective Mathematics Lessons through an Eclectic Singapore Approach, Professor Wong

from Singapore University quotes what he wrote in the 2015 Year Book of the Maths Association: In

memory of Glen T Evans, eminent Australian teacher educator and my Ph. D. supervisor. May his legacy

continue through the educators he has taught and inspired.
