Darebin City Council acknowledges the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin Nation as the traditional landowners and the historical and contemporary custodians of the land on which the City of Darebin and surrounding municipalities are located. Council also recognises and pays tribute to, and celebrates, Darebin’s long standing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and heritage.

Welcome to Darebin Arts

Art is being made in every corner of Darebin and we couldn’t be happier.

Council recently commissioned a report into the economic impact of the arts and creative sectors in our area and the results were impressive. Over 2,500 people are employed in the creative sectors in Darebin and the total contribution to gross regional product (GRP) is $436.2 million. This GRP makes the creative sector the eighth largest in Darebin. The creative ecology here in Darebin is unique and we’re very proud to be supporting artists and the community to take advantage of the outstanding work being made right here in our backyard.

Under the banner of Darebin Arts the breadth of creative opportunities on offer is exceptional.

Northcote Town Hall and Darebin Arts and Entertainment Centre are packed with music, theatre, dance, visual art and workshop options.

The Bundoora Homestead Art Centre continues to present a range of contemporary art exhibitions and workshops in the context of a significant heritage building and gardens that are worth a visit in their own right.

Darebin Arts is shining a light on the huge diversity of our city, amplifying and recognising the rich and diverse local community of makers, presenters and audiences.

Now it’s your turn to participate in this creative ecosystem – I encourage you to take a leap and see something new, inspiring and exciting!

Bell Curve By Speak Percussion, presented by Darebin Arts’ Speakeasy.

Experience an immersive and intimate performance work for 12 independent musicians playing the Federation Hand Bells. Through an exploration of complex mathematical and spatial relationships, a massed sound event unfolds across the performance space, a world revealed between the attacks and beating patterns of tuned bell resonance.

Speak Percussion is supported by Museum Victoria; the Victorian Government through Creative Victoria and the Department of Education and Training; Australia Council for the Arts; Darebin City Council; City of Melbourne, and Speak NOW.

CarmenPerformed by Melbourne City Ballet

As Australia’s only full-time professional neoclassical company, Melbourne City Ballet has established a strong following throughout Australia. Artistic Director Michael Pappalardo reimagines Bizet’s Carmen through a combination of neoclassical opera and ballet, bringing to life this evocative tragedy. With sharp movements, dazzling costumes and very distinctive vocals, this performance will take audiences to the Spanish town of Seville to experience the passion, betrayal and inevitable loss that is Carmen.

Pavarotti – King of the High C’sThe Music. The Voice. The Life. A thrilling musical biography of one the finest classical artists of the 20th century.

Selections include Nessun dorma, La donna mobile, Vesti la giubba, Ave Maria, O sole mio, My Way and La Vie en rose. Woven in are stories and anecdotes from Pavarotti’s life and his career which paint a vivid portrait of the artist and the man. Performed by David Rogers Smith (Carmen, Madam Butterfly, Pagliacci and The Phantom of the Opera). Devised and musically directed by Mark Jones.

By the Waters of Babylon Performed by the Australian Chamber Choir

Internationally renowned for their tours, with 18 fine hand-picked voices performing the masterworks of JS Bach. The classic hymn By the Waters of Babylon is no less potent in the 21st century than it was in 500 BCE. Based on Philip Hayes’ 18th century setting of that Psalm text, popularised by Don McClean on his 1971 American Pie album. The Australian Chamber Choir has commissioned Australian composer, Tom Henry, to write a new work on this theme.

Schubert’s Death and the MaidenPerformed by Melba Quartet

Dark, passionate and virtuosic, the thrilling Melba Quartet demands enormous musical and emotional resources from its musicians. Join us to witness this pinnacle of the chamber music repertoire performed by one of the country’s most respected and experienced chamber ensembles.

We’re giving a nod to the technicians who install art. We’re inviting several who are also artists to select one of their own works. Then for one day they can battle it out to determine which work goes where. Finally the technician can choose where an artwork goes with no input from the curator — pure, exciting bedlam!

Skin ThingSkin is a living organism that contains humans and many animals. It can be decorated with ink or ravaged by disease. At times it is re-configured into commodities such as belts, shoes or jackets. As a surface, it has been endlessly explored through painting, sculpture and photography. Skin also forms a crucial pivot within debates concerning gender, race and body image.

Skin Thing explores this highly charged surface through works by Polly Borland, Adam Geczy and Peter Sculthorpe, eX de Medici, Paul Knight, Archie Moore, Perimeter Books, Stuart Ringholt, Charles Robb, Salote Tawale and Jodie Whalen. Curated by Jane O’Neill.
