On behal o the University and, in particular, the International Oce, I would like

to welcome you to National University o Ireland Maynooth. We hope that your

stay with us will be pleasant, enjoyable and rewarding. The riendly sta o the

International Oce will be available to oer you support and advice throughout your

studies. The International Oce should be your frst point o contact i you encounter

any problems while studying at the University. Each Academic Department has an

International Coordinator that works closely with the International Oce to oer

academic support to all international students.

 

This guide contains inormation that will be useul to you as you settle into student

lie in Maynooth and can act as a quick reerence guide to acilities and services on

campus. The guide will also introduce you to Maynooth town and lie in Ireland. I youhave questions that are not answered in the guide, call into the oce, where we will

do our best to help you with your query.

To apply or a student visa you must go to The Department o Foreign Aairs website at www.oreignaairs.gov.ie, click on ‘Services to the publi c’ on the menu at the let hand side andthen select ‘visa inormation’ rom the menu. You will ind all the necessa ry inormation on this websiteto obtain a visa. Please read this inormation careully.

I you are coming to Ireland and you mu st pass through another country on your journey here, it isimportant that you check with the appropriate embassy to see i you need a transit visa to enter thatcountry beore continuing your journe y to Ireland.

While you are here in Ireland and you wish to leave or a short period o time, you must apply or are-entr y visa. De tails or this can be ound on the me ntioned website. You will require a letter rom theUniversity to state you are a registered student and you must request this rom the International Oice.

Accommodation

National University o Ireland Maynooth has several on-campus residence halls within a ive minutewalk o lectu re theatres, the library, sports and recreational acilities. There are 890 beds on campus, allo which are operated directly by the university and rom which we guarantee all international studentsaccommodation. The apartments a re secure and there are sta on call at any time o the day or night.

The University’s Residence Oice coordinates the on-campus accommodation a pplication process.International students are advised to apply o r campus accommodation early. Applications are madeonline via the Residence Oice website. The Residence Oice also helps students to ind o-campusaccommodation i that is preerred. Health Insurance

For non-EU students, conirmation o private medicalinsurance is required. The insurance system is operated byan insurance broker called O’Driscoll O’Neill in Ireland onbehal o Medicover. Medicover Medical Expenses which isthe most economical po licy costs €120 or one year cover.

You may apply or this policy vi a: https://nuimas.studentees.ie/ . The payment is made by ba nktranser. You must il l in your personal detail s, including your email address and student number,select MEDICAL INSURANCE (1 year cover) and ollow the online instructions on how to pay the ee

through your bank. The insurance details and policy will be emailed to the email address you haveprovided. Please keep these documents sae as you will need them or Immigration purposes and orany uture claims.

The three Irish health insurance providers are VHI (www.vhi.ie), Quinn Health (www.quinnhealthcare.ie) or Aviva Health (www.avivahealth.ie). Policies start rom 400 euro(approximately) and cover a range o services. You must contact these companies directly to organiseyour health insurance cover.

EU students will need a n E111/E128 or European Health Insurance Card which can be obtain ed in your

home country.

•TheeasiestwaytogettoMaynoothforthefirsttimeisbytaxidirectfromtheairport.  We recommend this or all international students as you will be unamiliar with the publictransport system and will be bringing your luggage.

3:StartingUniversityLife

Orientation Week

Orientation week takes place the week beore lectures commence in September. It is a week longevent that welcomes all students to the University and includes welcome talks, campus toursand introductions to the academic departments, student services and clubs and societies. It iscompulsory that all students attend orientation as they will gain vital inormation about theUniversity and be introduced to a new situation and environment. I you are coming to Maynoo thor the second semester only, Orientation will take place during the last week o January.

Registration

International students must register at National Universit y o Ireland Maynooth. At registrationstudents will be issu ed with a valid NUIM student card. This is an impor tant document. It proves that

a student is registered at NUIM and permits them to enter University buildings a nd borrow books romthe University library. An orange sheet will also be given to you which is very important as it containsyour student number and user password. Students are advised to memorise th e student number as itis used as a student reerence all around the Universit y. Your student number and password are alsonecessary to access on-campus computers and University web services such as webmail (personalemail),Moodle–theonlinelearningenvironmentforlecturenotesandassignmentsandexamresults.

International students will be inormed during orientation week when and where they will register.

It is important that each student registers at the allotted time and has all the required documentation.

You will need to bring the ollowing:

CHANGING MODULES

Students will have a period o two weeks ater registration to change modules. In this time, it isadvisable that students attend many dierent lectures to decide i they have made the right choice.This time allows students to sit in on a variety o lectures and not miss out on important notes.Students wishing to change modules should then return to the Records Oice in Humanity Housewith the new list o complete modules. It is the responsibility o each student to ensure that his/hermodules are recorded correctly.

4: Important Next StepsImmigration

I you are a citizen o a country outside the European Economic Area, you must register your presence inIreland with An Garda Síochána (the police). You should only present yoursel or registration with theImmigration service ater you have registered as a student at National University o Ireland Maynooth.

When you present yoursel beore the registration oicer you must provide cer tain inormation andevidence about your status.

Any changes you wish to make to the length o your stay or status must also be repor ted to immigrationoicials. You must also notiy the registration oicer i you plan to move to an other Garda District, and

report to the registration oicer o that new district within 2 days o arriving to live there.Following registration with immigration oicials, you will be issued with an Immigration Certiicate o Registration. The amount o time it takes to issue your Certii cate usually depends on whi ch oice youattend and how you pay or your Certii cate. The Registration Certiicate is the size o a credit card andincludes your name, address, photograph and your residence details. It is generally called a GNIB card asit is issued by the Garda National Immigration Bureau (GNIB).

To request a letter to conirm you are a registered student just pop up to the International Oice, illout the orange orm a nd drop it in the box at reception.

Open a bank account

Part-time work

International students (excluding members o the EU) can only take up causal employment in Ireland i they are ull time students and ully registered or the entire academic year. Employment can only be on apart-time basis o up to 20 hours per week during term time or ull-time during college holiday periods.

International students who it the above conditions and wish to take up work in Ireland, must have a

personalpublicservicesnumber(PPSnumber–seebelow).

Part-time jobs a re advertised on notice boards in th e Students’ Union, in newspapers, and onlin e. Youcan also hand in your CV (curriculum vitae/resume) to shops or you may need to ill in an applicationorm. It is not u ncommon to have a trial period beore you are permanently hired. Ireland’s minimumwage is €8.65 per hour.

Request a PPS number

Your Personal Public Ser vice Number (PPS Number) i s a unique reerence number that is requiredor any individual that wishes to work in Ireland. The PPS number also identiies individuals or taxpurposes and enables access to public ser vices and inormation in Ireland. You must be already livi ngin Ireland in order to apply or a PPS Number. You will be a sked to produce documentary evidence o identity and residence in Ireland

To get a PPS Number, you will need to ill out an application orm and produce the ollowing documents: •Yourpasspor tornationalidentit ycardOR

•YourImmigrationCard

•Evidenceofyouraddress,suchasahouseholdbill(electricity,telephone,gas,

etc.) in your name.

The Social Welare oices are located on 20 Kings In n Street in Dublin city centre.

Once you receive your PPS number, it is advisable to memorise it or keep it sae as it is very personalinormation.

Student Travel Card

The Student Travelcard is an ID card that students can apply or to avail o discounted ticket pricesor Irish Rail, Dublin Bus and LUAS. It also entitles the holder to a vast range o discounts on otherservices a nd goods. For urther inormation about the Student Travelcard and how to apply or onevisit www.studenttravelcard.ie or you can simply call to the Student Union where you can also

receive this card.

I you need any a ssistance you are invited to call i n to the Computer Centre on the South Campus (justbeyond the entrance gate) to meet with our Student Liaison Oicer. Here you will receive help andadvice on a wide range o topics relating to the Computer Centre which will help you to beneit ullyrom inormation technology while studying at Maynooth.

Language Centre

Situated in the Arts building, the Language Centre oers a wide range o courses to internationaland Erasmus students. Services include conversation classes and language laboratory sessions orundergraduate students o English, Irish, French, Spanish and German; non-specialist languagecourses or undergraduates and postgraduates in other disciplines and non-examination eveningcourses. The Language Centre has two digital langu age laboratories and a sel -access language

learning a rea that contains a large nu mber o PC’s, AV resources and satellite TV.

Library

The library will help you to make the most o your time working and studying in Maynooth. Itcontains 450,000 books/eBooks and more than 42,000 electronic journals. The library also providesa range o inormation skills and training courses to enable you to identiy, obtain, evaluate and useinormation eiciently, eectively and ethically.

Once you have your student card you may borrow items rom the library. Use the librar y catalogue tosearch or items and locate where in the library they are located. Most items can be borrowed or threeweeks, some or one week and heavily used items are restricted to two days. I a lecturer says certain

material is available on reserve in the library, this means they are kept at the main desk and you mayrequest them or three hours only. The loan restrictions allow books to circulate quickl y.

The library will come to eel like a second home to you during your time in Maynooth, as you losetrack o time completely whil e studying or an exa m or writing an essay and you are sure to bump intoa riend or t wo who persuade you to take a break and have a chat or a coee downstairs, where largetables are provided or students to meet in groups and discuss projects and work together, it is theonly place in the library where talking is permitted. Just be sure to keep the noise level to a minimum!

The library has many computers or students use, sel-service photocopying and also provides laptops,

which can be requested at the ma in desk. The sta are extremely helpul and a re on hand to assist youwith any queries. Make sure you don’t orget to return any borrowed books as late returns incur a smallpenalty charge!

Sports and Social Lie

Clubs and societies run by the students o the University play a vital role in college lie. Internationalstudents are warmly welcomed to get involved.

With thirty-six active Sports Clubs, an exceptional and time-honoured structure is in place orstudent sport. National University o Ireland Maynooth also has a wide range o Societies managed bystudents. Political parties, art, crat and design, comedy, music, drama, games and history are amongsome o the most popular o the societies at NUIM. There is also a very active international students’society that arranges social evenings and weekends away or international students.

On-campus acilities or students include an indoor sports hall and ully equipped gymnasium, whichaccommodate a wide variety o indoor sporting activities including badminton, basketball, encing,and karate. The sports hall is also the venue or the weekly aerobics and circuit training sessions,

which are organized by the Sports Oicer. The University has a swimming pool as well as numerousplaying ields which cater or outdoor sports suc h as hurling, soccer, camogie and rugby. The Canoe &Kayak Club make good use o the nearby river Liey.

Student common room and restaurant

A brand new state-o-the-art canteen, called ‘The Pheonix’ opened in April 2011. It is located besidethe Student Union and has a seating capacity or approximately 500 people over two loors and

includes a large paved plaza between the sports hall and the common room.The common room, located behind the Arts block, was built in 2009 and caters or students to eattheir own lunches, have group meetings, watch the ne ws on the plasma screens or use their laptops.It a space designed solely or students to have their own place to relax. On campus there is also ChillCae, located in the Student Union, ood is also ser ved in the Student Union, O’B rien’s Sandwich Bar inthe John Hume building and a Londis shop is also located here.

6: Student ServicesStudent Services provide support to students during their time at Maynooth University and ensure that anydiculties that arise do not aect the students’ success in university. The services provided are listed below:

International Oice

The International Oice at National University o Ireland Maynooth comprises a team o riendly andhelpul sta, supporting about 800 international students rom more than 50 countries during theentire period o their study at Nation al University o Ireland Maynooth. The Oice is charged with therecruitment and ongoing suppor t o international undergraduate and postgraduate students romoutside o the European Union. I n addition we suppor t approximately 200 exchange students romNorth America a nd the European Union each year.

The oice also maintains and develops institutional links with a number o universities all over the world including Boston College in the UnitedStates, Nanyang Technological University in Singapore,Peking University in China and the University o 

New South Wales in Australia, just to name a e w.A key role o the oice i s to encourage studentscurrently studying at National University o IrelandMaynooth to take the opportunity to study abroadat partner universities in the EU and worldwide aspart o their academic programme.

The International Oice can also liaise withthe other student services oices on behal o 

international students and should be the irstpoint o contact or any non-academic queries.

Academic Advisory Oice

The Academic Advisory Oice has been established to assist students seeking inormation or adviceconcerning the progress o their University studies. This oice unctions as a convenient irst point o 

contact or students who wish to seek advice on general issues that may arise rom their relationshipwith the University. Inormation is also provided which will assist students in accessing inormation onregulations and progression routes to their degree.

Any student requiring help on their general experience o University lie is encouraged to make contact with theOce. The Academic Advisory Oce is situated in the Arts building on the north campus o the University.

Access Oice

The Access Oicer has responsibility or promoting University access or people with disabilities andthose rom disadvantaged socio-economic backgrounds.

Each student is aware o their particular needs and the Access Oice endeavours to provide thesupports identiied. The Access Oice can help students with disabilities to arrange or supports theyrequire on campus. International students with disabiliti es are invited to contact the Access Oice.

Chaplaincy

There is complete reedom o worship in Ireland and students, whatever their religious aith may availo the prayer room. A prayer room is set aside in the Arts Buil ding or quiet prayer and meditation.All are welcome to call in a nd spend some time, lon g or short i n quiet and prayer. The room is openthroughout the day. Residence Oice

The Residence Oice is open or all students o the University during term and throughout the summermonths. It provides inormation to assist students to ind suitable accommodation or thei r stay at

National University o Ireland Maynooth. Accommodation listings are available rom the oice, asare inormation lealets o n renting, house sha ring, and on- campus accommodation. Students’ Union

The Students’ Union represents students’ interests on campus. Issues range rom student’s acili ties totransport and parking charges. The Students’ Union is located beside the Phoenix restaurant. 7: ExaminationsAbout three to our weeks beore the commencement o ormal National University o Ireland Maynoothexams, students receive by post to their home address, an examination permit. The examination permit

lists all module s that the student is registered to take examinations in. There is also inormation on thelocation, time and dates o exams included with this letter. It is the responsibility o the student to checktheir examination card to ensure that they are registered or all necessary examinations and that allpersonal details a re correct.

Visiting US and Erasmus students taking Semester 1 only

Assessment has to be completed by the end o the teaching semester. Where a module grade is basedon continuous assessment only, no issues arise. Where a module is partly or wholly based on anexamination, the examination should take place in the inal week o the teaching semester, beorethe conclusion o lectures or Christmas. Individual departments are responsible or administering theexamination. Departments may decide to replace an examination by an alternative but equivalentassignment due no later than the last day o the semester. Details o the assignment will be provided atthe start o the semester.

Visiting US Students and Erasmus students taking either Semester 2

Credit Transer

The European Credit Transer System has been developed by the European Commission and thirdlevel institutions over recent years in order to provide common procedures to guarantee academic

recognition o courses completed while studying abroad. ECTS provides a means or measuring andcomparing learning achievements, and or transerring these achievements rom one institution toanother. The ECTS programme also acilitates access to inormation on oreign curricula.

ECTS credits are unit values allocated to course units to describe the student’s workload. These credits reectthe quantity o work each course entails in relation to a year’s workload requirements at the institution.This workload includes lectures, practical work, seminars, private work and examinations. THE SUPERMARKETS:

DUNNES STORES sells groceries, clothes, shoes, homeware etc. It is well priced, convenient and has

long opening hours.

TESCO  is located at the end o the town on the Dublin road, it is similar to Dunnesalthough a lot larger and is open 24hours. It is a huge store with almostanything you could need at good prices.

SUPERVALU located beside the Glenroyal Hotel in the Glenroyal Centre on the Straan road,it is a smaller supermarket.

  ALDI located on the Kilcock road behind Manor Mills and directly across the road rom

the North campus. It is typically the cheapest store and is great or bread, juices,sweets and rozen ood.

  LIDL located on the Straan Road but quite ar rom the main street, it is similar to Aldiand is also very cheap.

 Aldi and Lidl are probably the best value supermarkets for every day basics however for brand names

and for a wider selection Tesco or Dun nes Stores are probably better.

THE STUDEN TS’ UNION

Located on the North campus, the Student Union is a great place or meetin g up with other students.It hosts many events throughout the year. It also ser ves ood during the day a nd is a place to relaxbetween lectures, play a game o pool or have a chat.

There are a number o take-aways in Maynooth. A small 24hr McDonalds is located beside Tesco . In thetown there is also Rebel pizza, Mizzoni’s pizza, Papa Johns pizza, Maximus, Supermacs and Abrakebabra,which all open late and some will also deliver.

TRANSPORT

Maynooth is well served by bus and rail links. Both the number 66 and 67 buses run to/romMaynooth and Dublin City Centre on a daily basis. There are buses every hal hour on bo th o theserouteswiththelastbusleavingMaynooth/Dublinaround11/11.30pm.ThebustoDublinCityCentre

Events in Maynooth

the S.U. and a number o othe r events.

Another event that many o our students look orward to is Christmas in the S.U. which usuallyhappens in one o the last weeks o the semester beore the Christmas Break.

In March charit y week is held and the main e vent is ‘The Gathering’, which is Maynooth’s very own

one-day music estival held on campus.

ree admission, but this varies rom place to place. For all o these you will need I.D. as the bouncerswill check that you are over 18, and sometimes over 21. To get home rom Dublin ater a night out youcan take the 67N nitelink bus on a Friday or Saturday night which will cost €5, or take a taxi which willcost approximately €40-€50.

The Phoenix Park is one o the largest enclosed recreational spaces within a ny European capital city. It isa perect place or walking, cycling, a game o ootball or a picnic on a nice day. Dublin Zoo and Áras anUachtaráin, the residence o the President o Ireland are located within. There are computercentres with computers available or student use also; these are located in the Long Corridor and theComputer Centre on the South Campus, and in Rye Hall and the Callan Building on the North Campus.The library also lends laptops out to students or the duration o a ew hours but these cannot betaken outside o the library.

CAN I GET A LOCKER FOR MY BOOKS?

Students can register at the Campus Services Oce, Riverstown House, South Campus to rent a lockeror the academic year. It costs €10 per academic year together with a reundable deposit o €5. Thisdeposit is reunded at the end o the academic year on the understanding that students empty theirlocker and return padlock with at least two keys to the Campus Services Oce.

13:GeneralRulesoftheUniversity

GENERAL RULES OF THE UNIVERSITY

1. Student Identity Cards, issued to each student at Registration, should be kept with the student at alltimes while on University grounds and produced on demand by any University oicial or member o the academic sta or properly authorised University employee. I a student ails or reuses to producehis/her Student Identity Card on such demand, he or she may be denied access to any or all Universitypremises and acilities. I the Student’s Identity Card is lost he/she should immediately inorm theRegistrar’s Oice. A replacement will be issued on payment o a ee o €20.

2. A student entered or a course or courses is expected to attend all lectures, tutorials, laboratory classesand all other requirements given in each course or which he/she is registered.

3.Ifastudentchangeshis/heraddress,he/shemustnotifytheRegistrar’sOfficeassoonaspossible.

4. A student who wishes to withdraw rom the University should i rstly notiy the Registrar’s Oice andthe Library and secondly return his/her Student Identity Card to the Registrar’s Oice. Students mustalsoadvisetheAcademicAdvisoryOfficeRoom59,ArtsBuildingAnnex,telephone(017083368).

Failure to do this could aec t later claims regarding ee remission or social welare entitlements.

5. The Public Health (Tobacco) Acts 2002 and 2004 prohibit smoking in all enclosed areas. The legislationapplies to all University buildings including oices, lecture halls, class halls, restaurants and the

Students’ Union Bar. Smoking will not be permitted in student accommodation with the exception o designatedsmokingapartments.Afineofupto€3,000maybeimposedonanypersonfoundinbreach

o the provisions o the legislation.

6. Motorists and cyclists must adhere to the speed limit o iteen mi les per hour on campus. Cycling isprohibited in Saint Joseph’s Square, in the vicinity o the John Paul II library and in such other areasas are indicated in signposts. Bicycles must be let in bic ycle racks which are provided in key locationsaround the campus. Cars must be parked in the car parks or designated parking areas. Parking to theront o Stoyte House and Long Corridor is restricted to designated sta o St Patrick’s College. Parking in

Saint Joseph’s Square is reserved or resident sta o St Patrick’s College. Motorcycles are not permittedon the South Campus and must be parked in the vicinity o the bicycle racks inside the main gate.

7. By way o medical and counselling support, the University authorities may require a student duringhis/her period o study at the University to attend a nominated medical practitioner/counsellor. Theauthorities would require such attendance only where they consider it to be necessary or the saetyor well being o the student concerned and/or the saety or well being o another/other member/members o the University community or otherwise. The University authorities would be responsible orthe cost o the initial attendance but not in respect o any ur ther attendance or treatment indicated.

8. A student may be denied access to any or all University premises or aci lities without notice, and orsuch period o time as the University authorities see it, in the event that the University authoritiesconsider such exclusion to be necessar y in the interests o the saety or well being o that student and/or any other member/members o the University.

9. Any accident which occurs on campus must be reported to the University Health and Saety Oicer,without undue delay.

10. Failure to comply with these rules may result in the imposition o disciplinary sanctions (includingexpulsion, ines, campus service and, in the case o the rule in relation to vehicles, the placing o adhesive stickers on vehicles and clamping).

CODE OF DISCIPLINE FOR STUDENTS

INTRODUCTION

The purpose o a Code o Discipline within the National University o Ireland, Maynooth is to ensurethat the pursuit o the objec tives o the University is not disrupted. These objectives are primarily theadvancement, promotion, gathering and dissemination o knowledge and understanding throughteaching, research, learning, scientiic investigation and rational discussion. To enable these aims to beulilled in a satisactory manner it is necessary that a suitable academic environment be maintained. ACode o Discipline is a positive thing which promotes concern and respect or other people’s rights andproperty.ThishelpstoenhancethequalityoflifeforallmembersoftheUniversitycommunity–staff

and students. A student who registers or any course in the University will be expected to accept theseobjectives and to comply with the rules and regulations o the University. A Committee o Discipline existsto help maintain good discipline within the University.

RULES AND BREACHES

The two basic rules o the Code o Discipline shall be:

1. Every student is expected and required to respect the rights o ellow students and the authority o theUniversity academic and other sta in the perormance o their duties and at all times to observe therules and regulations o the University and at all times conduct themselves in a manner conducive tothe academic environment o the University and the promotion o its objectives.

2. Every student is expected and required to respect the rights o ellow students in the enjoyment o the acilities o the University, including its clubs and societies, and all privileges in relation to thoseacilities and to observe applicable rules or regulations in so doing and at all times to respect theproperty o the University and/or o other students, members o the University sta or other persons

working in or visiting the University.

In applying the two basic rules the Committee o Discipline would normally regard as serious breacheso the Code such matters as:

• Plagiarism,cheatingortheuseofunauthorizedmaterialduringanexaminationorother

breaches o Examination Regulations. Breaches o the Examination Regulations shall be dealtwith directly by such oicers o the National University o Ireland, Maynooth as are speciiedin those regulations.

• Disruptionofteaching,study,researchoradministrationoftheUniversity.

• ObstructionofmembersoftheUniversityadministrativestaff,academicstaff,officers,

students or servants o the University in the perormance o their duties.

• FurnishingfalseinformationtotheUniversitywithintenttodeceiveorincircumstances

calculated to deceive.• Forging,alteration,ormisuseofUniversitydocuments,recordsoridentitycards.

• Intimidationorharassmentofanykind,physicalabuseorverbalabuseofadefamatory

character o another person.

• MaliciousorrecklessdamageortheftofUniversitypropertyoranyotherpropertyonthe

University grounds. Misuse o University property including library materials or privateproperty on the campus.

• ForcibleoccupationofUniversitybuildingsorgrounds.

• UnwarrantedinterferencewiththeUniversity’ssafetyequipment,firefightingequipment,

security systems and alarm systems.

• On-oroff-campusconductlikelytobringtheUniversityintodisrepute.Engagingin  activities that contravene the l aws o the State and inringe ei ther o the University ’stwo basic rules o discipline.

• RefusaltoproduceaStudentIdentityCardwhenrequestedtodosobyaUniversitystaff

member who shall identiy himsel/hersel.

• Failuretopayafineorcomplywithadisciplinarysanctionimposedforabreachofdiscipline

(subject to any right o appeal applicable).

• AseriousfailuretocomplywiththeregulationsgoverningtheuseofUniversitycomputer

services (Code o Conduct or Users o Computing Facilities available rom the ComputerCentre) and Library services which, in the case o a breach o library regulations, has not beendealt with by the Li brarian in accordance with the terms o those regulations.
