The Present Simple Tense
Usos
1. Descripción de hábitos:
She smokes. Ella fuma.
We usually go to work by bus. Normalmente vamos al trabajo en bus.

PERSONA + OPERADOR + "not" + VERBO + OBJETO
I do not / don't have a car.

Cuando un verbo acaba en ss, sh, x, o o, no se agrega "s" a la tercera persona singular
(he/she/it) sino que se agrega "es":

The Present Continuous Tense
Usos
1. Se usa este tiempo cuando queremos hablar de algo que está sucediendo ahora:
I am dancing. Estoy bailando
He is criticizing her. Él la está criticando
What are you doing here? ¿Qué estás haciendo aquí?
She is swimming. Está nadando.
2. 3. También se usa este tiempo cuando hablamos de nuestros planes futuros (planes
definitivos, tales como los que ya has escrito en tu agenda)
I'm taking the exam tomorrow. Hago un examen mañana
Why are you meeting him on Saturday? ¿Por qué te reunirás con él el sábado?
I am meeting Paul tonight. Me reuniré con Paul esta noche.

are not = aren't
is not = isn't
It is not coming = It isn't coming
You are not helping = You aren't helping1. Cuando un verbo acaba en una "e" la sacamos antes de agregar "-ing":
argue - arguing
2. Si la última sílaba del verbo es "consonante-vocal-consonante", se dobla la última
letra antes de agregar "-ing":
hit - hitting
run - running

3. Cuando el verbo acaba en "-y", agregamos "-ing" sin más cambios:
carry - carrying
enjoy - enjoying
hurry - hurrying
Recuerda: Con verbos que expresan sentimientos (Ej. gustar, amar, odiar,
preferir) no se usa "-ing".
I love her. / I like John. / I hate that. / I prefer tea.
También hay verbos que tienen un significado cuando acaban en "ing" y otro diferente
cuando no (Ej. "have"):
I have a car. - Tengo un coche
I am having a bath. - Me estoy dando un baño
She is having dinner. - Ella está cenando
El Presente Continuo sugiere que la acción está ocurriendo mientras hablamos, o en el
futuro próximo. Al contrario, el Presente Simple sugiere que la acción ocurre
repetidamente o es un estado constante.
He sings in a choir. He's singing now. - Canta en un coro. Está cantando ahora.
They usually speak only English, but now they are speaking French. - Normalmente
habla sólo en inglés, peor ahora está hablando francés.
I always try to do my best. I'm doing my best to help him. - Siempre intento hacerlo lo
mejor posible. Estoy haciendo lo que puedo para ayudarlo.
Sonia sometimes dries her things after it rains. She isn't drying her things now. - A
veces Sonia seca sus cosas después de que llueve. No está secando sus cosas ahora.

They are smiling to each other. They never usually smile. - Se están sonriendo.
Normalmente ellos no sonríen.
Present Passive Voice - Voz pasiva presente
Usos generales
1. Se usa la voz pasiva cuando queremos atraer la atención más a la acción y no a la
persona que la está realizando, o cuando la persona que la hace no es conocida.
The flowers are watered every day. Se riega las plantas todos los días
These chairs are being moved now. Están moviendo las sillas ahora.
2. Cuando el agente de la acción no es determinado (Ej. alguien, todos, ellos, la gente).
La voz pasiva se usa a menudo con los verbos decir, creer, entender y saber, para
evitar construcciones con 'ellos' o 'la gente'.
Robert is said to laugh a lot.
He is believed to eat 10 hotdogs in 4
minutes.Hippos are known to be dangerous.
Students are understood to learn a lot.
Ghosts are believed to appear at
midnight.
Edison is known to have invented the
electric bulb.
My nephew is said to be a genius.
Le dijeron a Robert que se riera un montón.
Se cree que él come 10 hotdogs en 4 minutos.

3. A menudo se usa la voz pasiva en el tiempo presente cuando se dan instrucciones,
noticias, órdenes, y en otros idiomas oficiales.
Smoking is forbidden here. Aquí está prohibido fumar.
The interviewees are requested not to eat. Se les pide a los entrevistados que no coman.
Photography is not allowed. No se permiten fotografías.
4. En algunas situaciones la voz pasiva se usa para enfatizar a la persona que realiza la
acción colocándolos al final de la oración después de la preposición "by".
The tour is always guided by Mr. Strand. El circuito siempre es conducido por el Sr.
Strand.
He's being asked by none other than SeanConnery.
Se lo está pidiendo no otro que el SeanConnery.

They bring flowers every day. What is brought every day (by them?) - ¿Qué traen cada día
(ellos)?
Someone is painting it. Who is it being painted by? - ¿A quién se está pintando?
They never go to school. What is never done by them? - ¿Qué no hacen ellos nunca?
