Its the social event o the season, and much planning has taken placeto make it so. Now our second year back at the Olympic Club,

we have many memories o last years splendid event to remind usto sign on or this winters happy estivitiesnot to mention the

welcoming o many new participants to this gala aairespeciallyyounger graduates joining the old. You are entering a new phaseo your eke involvementbigger and better than ever! o put itnot very politely, this is not an old art event.

Well be in the Crystal Room o the Olympic Club, meetingat 11:30, as usual. Ten the estivities begin: An hour or so osocializing with Fraters new and old seems to go by switly, as weapproach the serving o lunch. Tose who arrive early claim the

most visiting minutes. Its an exciting time.

And, as usual, were inviting the ladies to their customary buetluncheon in the Flying Leatherneck Room at the Marines Memorial

just behind the Olympic Club. Following their luncheon, theyllcome over to join us or a visit and-given any luck at all (meaning

we have our quartet in attendance)-theyll be serenaded.

While the ladies have their buet, a choice o two entrees is oeredto the men: Filet Mignon or Salmon. Te cost o the event is $64or the men and $30 or the ladies. A reservation orm is enclosed

in this issue o Nu News, and this must reach Frater Dan Costelloby December 2. I necessary to telephone him, he can be reachedat 925-827-9249.

Some Fraters arrive by BAR. For those driving, the most ecientparking or the less privileged masses continues to be at Sutter-Stockton Garage. By late morning youll be up on the top oors, asholiday shoppers will have already claimed the lower levels. Tenits an elevator ride and a quick walk up the street to the OlympicClub on Post Street or the Marines Memorial, on Sutter, a blocknorth and almost behind the Olympic Club.

Nu Chapter is doing exceptionally well. We

are well grounded socially, academically andphilanthropically. We have a strong base o activemembers and a sizeable and a well-rounded Fallpledge class. Trough all o this, we have alsoestablished a more cohesive reputation on campusand a stable chapter identity. However, the men oNu are really no longer a new chapter on campus. From 2002 until recently, a major ocus or ouractive members, pledges and alumni has beenreestablishing au Kappa Epsilon on UC Berkeleyscampus. Our main motivating actors revolved

around rebuilding KE and sustaining our chapterthrough the ormidable years. Our goals and actionsthrough these past years have been ocused onthese rebuilding eorts and on developing KE tobecome a lasting house.

I eel we have been very successul in these eorts toreestablish KE. Yet, we must be cautionary beorewe rejoice in all o these successes. Because we area no longer a new house at Berkeley, we must askourselves where we gain our motivation rom. How

do we ensure that KE does not plateau and acceptour current progress, rather than seek our long-term goals? Tese are the types o issues the house iscurrently acing and attempting to combat.

We are ocusing on maintaining the brotherhoodby reevaluating our goals and determining ourcurrent motivating actors. As I mentioned beore, the landscape o au Kappa Epsilon has beenprogressing in a positive direction, but we need to

A past issue o Te eke made mention o the importance o ekes in givengeographical areas getting together periodically or social events and activitiesekes in Illinois, Pennsylvania or Florida are not likely to attend our annualpicnic in Sonoma or the Christmas Luncheon in San Francisco (although a ewrom here or there have surprised us rom time to time). But we do hear o some

o their unctions, usually too much ater the act to be included in Nu News.In Sonoma County, anywhere rom six to twelve o us meet periodically orlunch at Te Saddle Club o Highway 12 between Sonoma and Santa RosaPerhaps you know o this, because we seldom ail to blow our horn about it inNu News. We love doing this, and i we dont schedule a luncheon, someonerom our group will ask when were getting together again. Weve been meetingon average, twice a year on a Friday, so we can begin the meal with what isarguably the best clam chowder in the west.

Te point being that we want to hear about your own luncheons, dinners, parties, barbecues, volleyball or poker games, whether they be in Marin CountyCaliornia, or somewhere in Massachusetts or Arizona. We know youre outhere doing stu, and were missing the vicarious thrill o hearing about it. Pleaselet us know what you did, when it happened, where you did it, what you talkedabout, and who was there. It helps us to confrm that eke is alive and weloutside the Bay Area. We are the Fraternity For Lie, and we are interested.

CAN YOU FEEL HE LOVE ONIGH? -Elton JohnAs or you alumni in or around the Bay Area, youd be surprised, perhaps, at the

act that the undergraduates request and appreciate your involvement in lie onChanning Way, or even just a visit to the House. Te Rush Dinner on September6 (the day we waxed WSU) was a happy event or me as I elt the warm glowo love and esteem that enveloped me while I was there. I said that night, andreiterate it now, that I am seldom happier than when I fnd mysel within thosewalls with these antastic men. It is almost surreal to simultaneously relive yourundergraduate days, and also see things as they are today-dierent in some waysbut in most ways so much the same. I wish I lived closer than 2 hours toChanning Way; but many o you are more ortunate, and I hope you will takeadvantage o your opportunity to eel the warmth. It doesnt take a lot o eorto drop by and say hello, and your reward will be rich.

ensure that this is the direction and type o growth we wantto pursue. Currently, we have recruited a motivated andcharged pledge class that will help us achieve our goals andalign our vision or the uture.

However, we eel that is not all that will help us sustainKE or the uture. We need as much alumni supportas possible. We need all willing and able alumni to comeparticipate in our events, especially alumni events. Wewelcome and ask or your guidance in developing our goalsand on continually building a stronger brotherhood.

    LETTER FRom ThE hiSToR

In delivering my pledge lessons, I oten fnd mysel citing good(and sometimes not so good) examples rom Fraters past. I tellthe pledges that it is important to consider the past, to knowwhat worked and what did not. I tell them that we have a lotto learn rom both the successes and the ailures o those thatcame beore us. When Philanthropy or Fundraising chairsstruggle or ideas, I oten direct them to past minutes o the

general meeting. I have come to realize that what will allowNu Chapter to stand tall is the oundation o our history. Iwe learn rom the past and use history as a oundation or thepresent, we are bound to move ever upward.

In understanding the relevance o history to the present, ormy second semester as Histor I am endeavoring to preservethe history that current Fraters are making daily in order toensure the success o uture generations o ekes. I want toaccomplish this in a number o ways. Obviously, we havethe minutes o general meetings, ocer meetings, etc as aguide or uture ekes. However, I want to provide personal

perspectives rom as wide a range o Fraters as possible. In thisway, we can oer a democratic orum to uture ekes, in whichthey can hear the voices o Fraters past cheering them on touture greatness. Firstly, I am bringing back the KE WeekBook, a project that languished last semester due to memberapathy. By being stricter with the deadlines and stressing theimportance o this or uture ekes, I am hoping to have thiscollective scrapbook cover all o the important weekly eventsthat occur in Nu chapter

Additionally, I am seeking to do somethingnew this semester to get a good cross-section o Frater opinion on Nu chapteroccurrences. At the end o the semesterI will be preparing a short list oquestions, both general and specifc, about experiences in KE or thissemester. Ten I am going to intervieweach Frater on video, and edit them

together onto a disc which will go in myHistor Scrapbook at the end o the semester. It is my hope that actually seeing the Fraters discuss KE wilnot only be interesting to uture generations o ekes, but wilalso provide a huge source o inormation. Film, more thanany other medium, oers verisimilitude. As such I am relyingon it to make the voices o current Fraters call out throughtime, and be heard loud and clear by uture ekes.

    YIB,

Ater initiating twelve dierent pledge classes since rechartering, we have arrived at the Nu Pledge class, the thirteenthclass to enter in candidacy or KE. Tey have kicked o thesemester with a jumpstart in the right direction. Tey havebeen on top o their requirements and overall are extremelyexcited to be undergoing the pledge process or acceptanceinto the bond. Beore I delve deeper in their accomplishments

so ar, I would like to give everyone a quick background abouthis pledge class. We recruited thirteen men this semester and each one o themhas something to oer to the chapter. On top o that, thispledge class is coming in with a lot o maturity. Tere are fvejuniors in the group and they all have their own perspectiveto bring ater two years at Berkeley or elsewhere. Tere is onesophomore and seven reshmen whose excitement or collegeand KE drives the pledge class orward to rise up and meetthe requirements laid beore them. We were also ortunate

enough to keep our connection to the UC Mens Octet aliveby recruiting another member rom the group.

Tus ar the pledge class has been very eager to show that theyare a good ft or the chapter. Teir commitment to communityservice and their desire to succeed is keeping them motivatedTey have already come up with some great undraising ideasto help und their pledge project, which will be rebuilding thebarbecue in the back yard.

Since this is my frst report as House Manager or au KappaEpsilon, I want to pay respects to the previous owner othe position. Anthony Wright is one o the most dedicatedmembers o KE I know; he gave his time, eort, and passionto make KE one o the best looking, cleanest and smoothestrunning houses on campus. As the new House Manager I

have pledged to keep the legacy that Anthony has begun andcontinue to run KE so that it is not a stereotypical rat,but rather a Fraternity o brothers and a home or all currentmembers and alumni.

Besides upkeep, I have been looking to fx up our backyard with the help o Nu Class to restore our barbeque andcreate a place where we can host our guests and have unourselves on an everyday basis. Weve been working to installnew saety eatures in the house to protect our Fraters andhouse. Furthermore, updating our entertainment system and

improving our ront yards landscaping has improved KEsreputation and our pride in our house. Its been a whirlwind oan experience or me the past couple weeks learning the ropesrom ony, and I look orward to giving many more reportsabout the success that all o KE will share in improving andkeeping our house as one o the cleanest and best in Cal.

    YIB,

    Michael Deamer, House Manager

PhiLAnThRoPy REPoRTTis semester in philanthropy we want to make sure thatthe motivation o the brothers toward philanthropy andundraising is higher than it has been in the past. In orderto do this we have done a ew things. One is that we havethought o a more interactive signature philanthropy event, that we eel will spark the interest o not only more brothersin the house, but more o the general community and Greekcommunity as well.

We will be hosting a Battle o the Bands ournament oAlzheimers on campus this semester in November. It will beadvertised via radio, iers, t-shirts, and email. We eel thamusic is a strong bonding tool or the community, because somany can relate and appreciate it on a similar level. Anothermotivating aspect or this event is the act that it is a competitionStudents and Greek members are very competitive with eachother at this university, and those who have some pride orgratifcation or their bands will be motivated to participate inthe competition. We believe this sort o event is eective inraising both more money or our philanthropy sponsors, andin motivating the student community to participate.

As ar as typical philanthropy events throughout the semesterwe plan to proceed with signature annual events such as, the Alzheimers Memory Walk, Te Berkeley Project, and thwalk or Breast Cancer, and several more charity events suchas greening projects, community tutoring, and awarenessactivities. Our plan or motivating brothers to participate inthese ongoing activities is to hold brotherhood events such as

parties and socials or those who participate, or just to oerrewards as incentive or raters to sign up.

Tis semester we are recording all hours that go intophilanthropy on the Cal Greeks website, and we plan to log arespectable amount o hours in this so that other members othis community know that we can contribute appropriately.

Living in the house this semester haprovided me with experiences and memories that I could not

I am very excited to see what these pledges will bring to thehouse both during the pledge process and in years to come when they become a part o the house. We have anothersolid pledge class coming through KE this year and I thinkeveryone can expect great things rom them.

KE has also helped and motivated meto run or leadership positions such as UC Berkeley Senatoror a Latino Business Student Association External VP. Fraters are listed in order o graduation year. Te new National eke Directory, however, will list men by yearo initiation. Tis, in many ways, is more logical. It more readily identifes pledge brothers, and eliminatesconusion caused when men do not graduate on schedule.

Tese men are members in good standing o Nu Chapter Alumni Association.
