INTERDISCIPLINARY MANAGEMENT OF ESTHETIC AND RESTORATIVE

DILEMMAS

Some of the most challenging esthetic and restorative dilemmas are those that fall into a gray zone between traditional therapies. The complexities of diagnosing these problems, coupled with the lack of optimal treatment options, often lead to inappropriate treatment and disappointing compromises. This presentation will focus on an interdisciplinary approach to diagnosing the fundamental components of these complex problems and managing them by combining traditional therapies with new treatment options to ideally address the underlying issues and more predictably achieve success. These new options include surgically facilitated orthodontic therapy (SFOT) utilizing corticotomies and single- or multiple-tooth osteotomies. Learning Objectives: • Solutions to esthetic dilemmas often fall into a “Gray Zone” between the different disciplines • An interdisciplinary approach is needed to properly diagnose and treatment plan these problems • Recent advances in orthodontics can assist the interdisciplinary team to more predictably treat these problems

The hardest beliefs to change are those learned in dental school or residency. The first exposure to a concept seems to stick even when presented with new clinical evidence to the contrary. Dr. Rouse will present a personal journey of airway-induced problems found in three of his patients. All three were missed by the “normal” medical and dental practices and procedures. IS A CLICK?

There seems to be no consensus on what TMD is and more importantly how to treat it. The various TMD specialists all seem to disagree, so that as a non-TMD expert, most doctors come to believe doing the least amount is a prudent approach. This course will help you understand why there was so much confusion and disagreement in the past. You will also learn how you can identify, diagnose and treat specific types of TMD in your practice, that will benefit both your patients and the practice.

A LOOK AT NEW MATERIALS THROUGH THE LENS OF

PROVEN PRINCIPLES

There are proven restorative materials whose preparation requirements, fabrication techniques, and functional predictability are very familiar to dentists and dental laboratory technicians. At the same time there is a barrage of commercially biased information to sort through regarding new materials and technologies. In this presentation we will accomplish an impartial examination of the properties and the evidence associated with these “hot” new materials as well as their different fabrication techniques. Based on our knowledge of proven principles, we will discuss how these restorative alternatives compare with traditional options and what we might predict for these new, and often untested materials.

Participants should understand:

-what considerations, other than “will it break?”, come into play when determining whether a material has the potential for long term success or failure

-the physical properties for all-ceramic materials with particular emphasis on what most frequently leads to failure

He opened his practice that same year in Colorado Springs and developed a practice with emphasis on major restorative and cosmetic dentistry.

The Colorado Prosthodontic Society Board of Directors and I would like to welcome you to the 2010-2011 seminar series. Our continuing education program of six seminars includes speakers of the highest caliber from truly diverse professional, academic, and cultural backgrounds.

Our first speaker on September 20th is Dr. David Alleman. Dr. Alleman will present his “Six Lessons of Biomimetic Dentistry,” a new approach to restoring teeth. His approach is something most haven’t seen before. I am also excited to welcome Dr. Norton from England and his presentation on the “BioManagment Complex (BMC)” and its effect on clinical outcomes. We have heard a lot about the downfalls of mini-implants, but Dr. Shatkin in November will present how he has placed thousands with excellent success and present his approach to this controversial discipline. Dr. Sascha Jovanovic needs no introduction and will speak to us about several Implant related topics. He is a highly sought after speaker and I am proud to have him. We have a special treat with Dr. David Clark and his 3D lecture (yes including the glasses) about the “End of the GV Black Era,” and how composites could perhaps be better placed, and an intensive discussion on the devastating crack propagation in teeth. Our seminar series will be completed by Dr. Chris Brady in April and his presentation on Case Acceptance and the things we dentists due to ruin this important “Golden 10 Minutes.” Several of the above mentioned speakers have rounded and changed the way I practice and I am excited to share their knowledge with you.

The Colorado Prosthodontic Society is the longest continuously organized study club in the nation. We are entering our 91st year and I am proud to serve as your President and program chair for the 2010-2011 season. I hope the topics this year provide you with new and enlightening ideas as our profession and materials continue to change. Continuing education is the vehicle in which we advance our profession and I commend you all for continued involvement.
