”Continuosly develop methods that are questioning the interaction between various art fields, between theatre and society and between theory and practice.”

Page 5: Nt a Graduation 2013

the norwegian theatre Academy was established within Østfold University college in 1996. At the origin of the project, it was a three years pilot-project in puppetry education accomplished by a foundation named: “Stiftelsen norsk Dukketeater Akademi”. After a positive evaluation from the Ministry of education, ntA started up as the new theatre education in norway. today we have moved beyond puppetry, to educate aspiring performing artists and scenographers who wish to explore the interaction between visual art and theatre, between theatre and society and between theory and practice. our study program emphasizes collaboration between our two degree programs – scenography and acting. the artistic profile of the courses is inspired by theatre forms in which the perception of images, space, sound and bodily awareness are central elements. our goal is to challenge students to think in innovative ways, to help them develop their own artistic practice, and to prepare them to meet professional demands of working with directors, choreographers, film-makers, composers, playwrights and other artists in both traditional and experimental genres.

our identity is continuously developed by the artistic directors who curate the two BA programs for the students’ artistic development by giving the floor to renowned international artists. this way of organizing the teaching opens the Academy up for continuous development and brings us to the forefront of theatre training. it is important to notice that 60% of the teaching is provided by the visiting artists recruited worldwide, and that our artistic staff is appointed for a period (term) of 4 years.

Furthermore, we offer our students the chance to study in a very special and intimate setting that allows close individual attention whether they are creating independent projects or directed productions.

Since the very start in 1996, the Academy has graduated 73 actors and 48 scenographers. this spring, 9 new artists will graduate from norwegian theatre Academy.

congratulations to all!

i am proud to graduate the tenth class of ntA scenographers! the norwegian theatre Academy has grown tremendously since you started your studies in Fredrikstad three years ago. it has expanded its activities beyond the BA programs, but also strengthened that core with you being constituents of it. the curriculum of the academy must not solely be understood as an undergraduate programme stipulated for the students. it is a constant dialogue between the students, the staff, the guest teachers and visiting artists. the resulting perpetual metamorphosis of the curated curriculum is a key of the arts education at Østfold University college. While you explored a vast scope of scenographical expressions and reflections, while you investigated and experienced the encounter of architecture and theatre, and while you conceived and realized a variety of spaces and their evolvement in time you gave shape to the research project called “norwegian theatre Academy”! We constantly operate in the present, examine and conceive artistic strategies while reflecting the past. you have been introduced to, tested and explored various approaches of existing methods with artists and professionals from new york, Berlin, Stockholm, copenhagen, London, Moscow, Milan, oslo and Fredrikstad. you have acquainted yourself with manifold skills, not pretending you acquired them, but giving you the ability to develop and procure skills relevant to tasks you will meet in you professional career. As i witnessed you grow over these last three years, i learned a lot from you!

you have been thrown into the cold water with a first workshop making you experience the holistic character of scenography. to become an architect for the theatre you must investigate and experience the relationship of your body to its surrounding space. you explored the materials these spaces are made off, somatically, artistically and scientifically. you immersed in and investigated the complex heritage of the town of Wolfenbüttel together

with history students from göttingen. you challenged your perception by approaching scenography evolving in time through the lens of a camera. you entered into the dialogue with director students from oslo. you were part of a residency at the Watermill center exchanging thoughts with students from columbia University. And you scrutinized moments of local identity in Fredrikstad. you realized a performative stage in the urban context of oslo touching upon the core of scenography. you have witnessed the amplitude of contemporary artistic creations and discussed those at the ruhrtriennale with other students and the very artists. And you have composed stage scenographies for productions with guest directors from all over the world. Finally you have conceived your very own artistic creations in ntA’s black box.

have you succeeded during your studies? have you failed as we asked you to? Failing and succeeding must be a unity in the arts. Both are interdependent in your artistic striving. now you have the tools to develop the skills corresponding to your artistic visions, you have knowledge in various fields: theatre, architecture, the visual arts, dance, film and music – the very fields constituting this intrinsically interdisciplinary realm called scenography. you know about the past and current tendencies within these fields. you have experienced the practice which is inherent to scenography. you have learned about the skill of collaboration which is prerequisite to scenography, maybe the only skill which must be taught at an art academy, the traps and opportunities of collaboration. But most important you have increased your ability to listen, the foundation of all performing arts. now go out there. Listen to what surrounds you, listen to echoes, listen to traces of past times, listen to the whisper of today, listen to the others. Do also listen to the fragile, the obscure and the silent, there you will find the seeds for your future works. And from there change originates. you are not solely responsible for change, but you have a responsibility towards society for its change to crystallize!

The responsibility of the Artist

Act 10 has always been a group of stunning individuals. you carved radical unique paths during your three years at the Academy that sometimes crossed, dramatically joined and other times, collided. you are individuals with strong minds and hearts. Strong, because some of you are fierce warriors, who fight for your work with the passion of a wild tiger. Strong, because some of you are philosophers, tender listeners, with the confident smiles of trickster. Many of you are both.

you meet together at this graduation having asked many questions of yourselves and each other. these questions also lead you on exchange in Jerusalem and new york, or to work in international projects in Venice, canada and at Watermill center. you are transformational – some of you have gone to great lengths to seek your own truth and sacrificed a great deal in the process. i like to hear about your eclectic meetings in the legendary Karaoke bar where you let loose and laugh together: A combination of very brave, very serious and yet very ironic and playful performances. you have become wonderful people and extended yourselves inside this journey, i have watched your hearts break and even seen you attempt flight. Act 10, you have a great capacity for saying “no” and asking “why”. you all enjoy, and also struggle with the idea of “doing your own thing”. one of the greatest lessons you learned in this education is that success comes only through investment, commitment and trust. this has been a hard won lesson for you and i am honored to have been able to join you in it. Acting teacher, Annalisa Dal prá writes, “Act 10 embodies a great investment: this class of rebellious individuals has upheld an inner cord of endurance and brilliance. i am blessed to have met them and wish them more than ever a perspective that brings their sharpened senses toward the awakening of the audience.”

you have developed into a charismatic ensemble, after challenges met in both directed and independent productions along the way. After your first directed production together you struggled to find meaning in what theater is for: then you found inspiration and new tools in your work, “Life is hard (But it Will Be Better next Week)” with robert Johanson of nature theater of oklahoma in the third year. in your 2nd year independent projects you dared to fail – and also learned the power of ugliness, formlessness and falling as methodology. By your third year independent productions, you began to find your own moments of mastery - because your work was honest and explored real questions you didn’t let others sway you from. in your vocal practice many of you excelled, growing tremendously and becoming sharp and powerful singers. you are a group of musical individuals – because you are composers and because you allow yourselves to see the world artistically through rhythm, vibration and sensation. you resist the traditional “idea” of the actor, and we have encouraged you to find out what that resistance generates. Musicality, invention, questioning – these are your tools.

During this final year you also enjoyed workshops where exploration, experimentation and pleasure came together - and in this process you found crucial methods that allowed you to enjoy yourselves. in your final year at ntA, Sxip Shirey, Dan Safer, Joshua Sofær and robert Johanson inspired you to find the curiosity, play and excitement of this work. What you share in your final production with Michael Laub reveals your raw voices, your musicality, your tenderness, and the reflections on your deep dive through the underworld of creative self-discovery. i hope that this last moment together is still a learning experience, and that it remains one after you depart. that you continue the lively dialogue between what you want, and what you need: Seeking the collaborative spirit of play that comes only from listening, and at times, surrender to the other.

A Journey to the Deep

Actor

I want to embrace my audience heavily - to comfort them or all of the sudden squeeze some-thing unforeseen out of them. I wish my spectators to come from both outside and inside of the artistic community. I aim to create atmospheric sensual performances that explore connection between different art forms. In this mixture something new and exiting is happening. I wander

“If everybody would agree that their current reality is A reality, and that what we essentially share is our capacity for constructing a reality, then perhaps we could all agree on a meta-agreement for computing a reality that would mean survival and dignity for everyone on the planet, rather than

each group being sold on a particular way of doing things.” – Francisco J. Varela Paolo Zuccotti

Infinite Record: Archive Memory and PerformanceThe Norwegian Theatre Academy has staged the works of many pioneering international guest artists in over 15 years of teaching BA theater students. productions and workshops in various media are stored in what we now term our “archive”. Just as the role of recorded history is critically observed through post-modernism, in the field of performance studies the relation between live art and documentation is a precarious one, constantly being questioned. in this project, 3 guest artists will hold one-month residencies at ntA to help us explore, shift and challenge the notion of the archive from different perspectives in new creative works. Artists’ residencies at ntA culminate in a new work in progress presented at the Academy, followed by three laboratory style seminars that take place internationally in collaboration with our institutional partners in the UK, USA and germany. our first artist Wen hui, of Living Dance, Beijing, created Memory Mountain at ntA in March 2013.

infinite record will culminate in a final conference at Mit. We will also realize a group publication that represents the research process.
