September/October has bought some new additions to teacher families at our school. Mr Hunt and Mrs Beattie both welcomed little girls, Mrs Cleary had a baby boy, Mrs Walker became a grandmother and Uncle Lloyd Walker a grandfather for the first time. Congratulations them all!We also welcomed our 2020 Kindergarten students and parents with the beginning of our Kindy Transition Program. This is a series of sessions designed to support children (and their parents) to get ready for school. The current Year 4 students have been trained as “buddies” and are very excited to welcome Kindy 2020 to MWPS. If you have a child starting school next year and are interested in joining us, please contact the office as soon as possible.

Meanwhile Year 6 students are preparing to say farewell to their primary education and hello to high school. Most secondary enrolments are confirmed and orientation visits are occurring over the coming weeks. Contact your child’s high school for details. If you know an ex-student of MWPS who is in Year 6 and interested in joining their old friends at our Year 6 Farewell Dinner Dance, please encourage them to let us know their new contact details. We would love to send them an invitation. On 25 October our school celebrated Teacher Appreciation Day. Thank you to our teachers and all those who work hard to support them.It is easy to forget in our very busy lives, just how much our teachers do to create experiences designed to engage and enhance student learning. This often goes beyond the classroom and often outside of school hours. Things like school production nights, school camp, excursions, music festivals, public speaking competitions, festivals, Opera House performances and more. Thank you to our very generous community, for showing your support with a fantastic morning tea and a friendly chat. It takes a great community to make a truly great school.

BUNJI Excursion to Goulburn

This trip was organised by the PCYC and local police area command. We went on a one day excursion to Peanuts Wellbeing Sanctuary near Goulburn NSW. Peanuts farm is a sanctuary for rescue animals. The bus trip was long, but we played a lot of fun games to pass the time. We got to go to Macdonald’s for breakfast but we had to make our own lunch! We got to do a lot of fun activities such as playing with the animals and feeding them. We fed a lamb and named him ‘Lam Lam’. The owners of the farm gave us merchandise including a t-shirt, water and a backpack.Hopefully we will get to go again next year. It was so much fun!

We were lucky enough to be invited to participate in the “BUNJI” program. Bunji is an Aboriginal word for friend.

1SUPPORT UNIT update

Students in 2-6H have been looking at ways to stay safe in the community. This includes crossing roads, stranger danger and sun safety. They have been excited about the new Science topics of the water cycle and the Great Barrier Reef.

On Wednesday the 23rd October we celebrated Grandparents Day. It was wonderful to have grandparents coming to our class and school. K2D students were very happy.

K/6M students have happily settled in to their new classroom in A-block. They have thoroughly enjoyed the addition of a keyboard to music therapy sessions and are looking forward to exploring the sounds they can make with it throughout the term.

Stage 1 have had an exciting start to Term 4. We have been learning about the water cycle while also asking questions like “What happens to water?” and “Where does it come from?”

Grandparents day was also a wonderful addition to the Marrickville West calendar. Many students and teachers can’t wait until the next one.

3H created posters about sustainability. Here are some examples.

Year 3 has been learning all about how to read analogue clocks.

Year 4 students have been learning about prime numbers in Mathematics. They created an artwork using prime numbers inspired by the artist Jasper Johns.

Students made their own clocks and added tabs to these to help them read the time. They learned about reading time on the minute and past and to the hour. We had a lot of fun making these clocks!

Students from our school recently undertook an education tour of the national capital. Students were provided the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy. The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government contributed funding of $20 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs. The rebate was factored into the costing of the excursion and has been paid directly to the school.

Canberra School CampHi, I’m Justin and this is about my experiences from my Year 5 and 6 school camp at the end of Term 3. We did lots of fun things and went to lots of places. Some of the places we went to were: Questacon, which was full of science; Parliament House, where the government works; and the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS), where some of our Australian athletes train. We stayed there for 3 days and 2 nights. The Lightning machine was one of my favourites from Questacon because it’s fascinating how people can create artificial lightning in a room. There was also an earthquake room where you can build towers and then an earthquake simulator will try to knock it down. Then we visited the gift shop in Questacon. There were a lot of cool things to choose from and I bought a few items like a kaleidoscope, a hand ball and a paleontology kit in which you dig fossils out of a block of sand.In our trip to Parliament House I enjoyed seeing the House of Representatives and the Senate chambers. I liked it a lot because we learned about our local representative, Linda Burney and what she does. The rooms were huge and very wide. I also enjoyed the view off the roof.At the AIS I liked the bobsleigh, reactor and cricket bowling simulators and seeing the athletes training – they were very professional at their sport. In the cabins it felt like I was in a hotel. The food was great and I especially liked the dessert. The building was huge and it felt like a sleepover with all of my friends. We played fun games and talked a lot in our cabins and on the bus. I really had a good time going to Canberra with my friends and I look forward to going back there sometime.

The Most Amazing Musical YetOn the 18th of September 2019, 3-6 put two terms of brilliance into one fantastic night. MWPS preformed Roald Dahl’s Cinderella with a great effort. All crazy things happened from Freddie Mercury making a guest appearance in our play, to Prince Charming chopping off heads. All jokes aside, it was an amazing musical. Above all the greatness though, there was something that damaged the night slightly. The rain was pouring and meant that some of the cast got wet, which wasn’t very pleasant, although it all worked out in the end. We enjoyed grooving to Queen’s Crazy Little Thing Called Love and loved moving to Ah-a’s Take on Me. The hall was packed with parents and family members and they all turned their heads to see Kai’s Freddie Mercury impersonation. Mrs Collins, one of the people who made this performance happen, commented on his appearance. She said: “It was like he was Freddie Mercury. The way he strutted and moved his jaw.” All the hard work and countless hours of rehearsal and dancing payed off in the end. Everyone who was committed really put their all into the play and that made it a memorable night. It just shows that if you practice and practice, it makes everything about 100 times better.

Ethics: Could you be an ethics coordinator for Marrickville West PS?Our current ethics coordinator is moving on at the end of this year and we are seeking a volunteer so that classes can continue next year. Ethics classes began at Marrickville West PS in Kindergarten and are currently available for children from kindergarten to year 6. The ethics coordinator communicates with school staff, supports ethics teachers and liaises with Primary Ethics, the not-for-profit organisation approved to design curriculum and training for the program. This role provides a great opportunity for a working parent who might be unable to volunteer during school hours and is a rewarding way to engage with the school community. Times are flexible, requiring approximately 1-2 hours per week. Online training is provided. We are also looking for more Ethics Teachers. Could you, or any members of your family or community, be an Ethics teacher for MWPS?Ethics classes are provided by volunteers, many of whom are parents in the school. Some of our teachers are moving on soon and we will need new teachers if we’re to continue offering Ethics classes to every child who has opted-in.Ethics teachers receive full training by Primary Ethics, the not-for-profit organisation approved to design curriculum and training for the Ethics program. Training consists of a two-day workshop and short online modules. Lesson materials are provided. Suitable volunteers have an interest in children’s education and development of critical thinking skills and must be available 9:30-10am or 10am-10:30am every Tuesday during school term.If you are looking for an opportunity to make a valuable contribution to our school, please visit primaryethics.com.au or contact Liz Roberts on [email protected] or 0403937891.

Cubby HouseCubby house has been seeing some lovely engagement from chalk drawings, homework corners, small group nooks and hide and seek games. We wish to extend thanks again to Kim for designing it and the team of volunteers it took to install this wonderful addition!

Cindy’s twisted storyLast night, on the 18th of September 2019, MWPS had the most fabulous Cinderella performance this year run by teachers and students from 3-6. The new twisted version is based on Roald Dahl’s Revolting Rhymes story. My friend and I have interviewed some behind the scenes people and even one of the actors! First, we interviewed the amazing Miss Collins, who was one of the directors. First, we asked about the costume selection to which she replied, “It’s not hard to pick if you stick to the personality.” Miss Collins was truly amazed by Cinderella’s dress made by the extraordinary Olivia in 5H. “Sensational seamstress and a beautiful human being,” she said. “There were stressful moments and it was kind of hard to get the actors to memorize their lines, but it all worked out after hard practice.”After that we Interviewed Cinderella (AKA Kaitlyn year 6C) and she had such amusing one-word answers. The first question asked was if she liked the dress to which she replied “yes.” Then we asked if she was scared on the stage and she said “very.” Such descriptive language! Kaitlyn felt great in the beautiful dress but of course she was cold. Finally, we interviewed Miss Annita who helped with the costumes. We decided to ask how hard it was to make the skirts and how proud she was of us. “The skirts were easy to make, and I love sewing. Last night was special. I was very proud.” She replied. Next we asked how much she liked our own Freddy Mercury. “I am just speechless, he was phenomenal.” Miss Annita was surprisingly not stressed. She was amazed by our costumes and thought we were spot on. The play was truly amazing, and the makeup was super funny for the ugly sisters. The costumes were very well done, and the actors couldn’t have been better. The people managing the play did a great job and the background scenery was fabulous. The audience loved the performance and the night was amazing.
