Our Top Recommended Visits

Make and Test your own shampoo (Age 9 – 12 yrs)Students perform their own experiments with the help of some ionic chemistry to make several versions of their own shampoo and to see how they perform in tests against commercial products.

Extract your own DNA (Age 10 - 13 yrs)Students will learn about the DNA molecule and extract their own DNA which they can make into a necklace to take away.

High Velocity Eggsporter (Age 14-18 yrs)Build and crash test a vehicle on a specially designed rig then analyse the results using high speed photography - learn about forces in a very practical way!

Forensics Workshop (Age 14 - 18 yrs)Your students will experience what it would be like to work in a forensics laboratory by investigating a fictional crime scene scenario. A great introduction to genetics and forensic analysis with the opportunity to use modern molecular biological techniques to test DNA samples.

A Question of Taste (Age 16 - 18 yrs)In this genetics workshop, students will extract and test their own DNA using modern techniques and equipment normally only found in research laboratories to compare their phenotype with their genotype.

Centre of the CellPlacing science in context, this is the first science education centre in the world to be located within medical laboratories. Students will experience unique science shows, digital interactive games, human specimens and interactive microscopes. CERNThere’s nothing quite like seeing physics in action to spark your students’ interest in science. The world’s largest particle physics research laboratory will do just that, taking your students on a journey into science. Home to the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), at CERN your students will learn about this gigantic scientific instrument and be able to observe it from the viewing area.

Guided toursYour group’s tour of CERN will follow a variety of themes (depending on the day) including ‘Detecting Particles’, ‘Discovering Antimatter’ or ‘The accelerators of the future’ and comprises an introduction, a short film and a visit to one of the experiments and/or to an accelerator located at the surface. All tours are guided by staff members involved with CERN.

Exhibitions

Groups can choose between two multimedia exhibitions - Universe of Particles - a fascinating look at the world of particles from the Big Bang to the present day, or Microcosm - students will explore the mysteries of the universe and discover the massive apparatus used by scientists. We can even book your groups' lunch in the CERN staff canteen!

Book early to avoid disappointment!

The History of science MuseumHousing a collection of scientific instruments, this museum allows students to put today's science into perspective and better understand the evolution of certain disciplines and techniques such as astronomy, microscopy, gnomonic – the development of sundials and similar instruments, electricity and meteorology.
