• Entire markets are transforming rapidly with the convergenceof voice and video over packet-based networks. IP has estab -lished itself as the protocol of choice to enable convergence of video, voice and data services to meet the requirements of both consumers and enterprises.

• Carrier Ethernet is quickly transforming the service deliveryarchitecture for virtual private networks (VPNs) and tripleplay service aggregation. The delivery landscape is changingfor both consumer and enterprise services alike.

• Service providers need to accommodate and support the new demands for content-rich applications and bandwidth-intensive services based on IP and carrier Ethernet.

• Service providers are looking to evolve their network support staff ’s aptitude in IP and carrier Ethernet to deliver profitable consumer and enterprise services.

CERTIFICATION OBJECTIVES

• Serve as the starting point in the Alcatel-Lucent SRCProgram for students with limited knowledge of IP andEthernet technology.

• Provide an understanding of the transmission controlprotocol/Internet protocol (TCP/IP) suite.

• Identify the key functions of the Ethernet protocol.• Identify the key functions of an IP network and IP

addressing scheme.• Provide an overview of Alcatel-Lucent’s Managed Com -

munications solution and Triple Play Service DeliveryArchitecture and related key concepts.

• Provide an overview of Layer 2 and Layer 3 business VPNssuch as virtual private LAN service (VPLS), virtual leasedline (VLL), and IP-VPNs (RFC 4364, formerly RFC 2547bis).

As the starting point in the Alcatel-Lucent Service Routing Certification (SRC) Program, the Alcatel-LucentNetwork Routing Specialist I (NRS I) certification establishes a strong foundation for the Professional andArchitect tracks in the program. The Alcatel-Lucent Network Routing Specialist I certification is designed to givestudents basic knowledge of IP and Ethernet tech nologies. Upon successful completion, students will be familiarwith the fundamentals of TCP/IP, routing, routing protocols, IP addressing and carrier Ethernet services, andwill be well on the way to furthering their skills in triple play consumer services and enterprise-managedcommunication services.

Based on their experience and expertise, students may choose which coursesto follow. Courses have suggested prerequisites. However, a certification canbe awarded only to those who pass the written and lab exams required fortheir chosen certification. All exams identified per certification are mandatory,although the exams do not have prerequisites.

The NRS I certification is valid for three years. You will be required to re -write the Alcatel-Lucent Scalable IP Networks exam (4A0-100), in order to maintain a valid certification.

IP Routing CertificationsIf you have already received knowledge certification by one of the organizations identified in the following table, and your certification is still valid, you may receive credit towardsprerequisite IP Routing exams in the Alcatel-Lucent Service Routing Certification program.On validation, you will receive exemptions based on the certifications that you hold. Forexample, an individual who holds a valid and active CCIE will be exempted from exams 4A0-100, 4A0-101 and 4A0-102.
