Surveying with TSC2 and Survey Controller

    OVERVIEW

This document will present the concepts of surveying with a TSC2 data collector using Survey Controller software. Procedural documents are referenced for field setup. Topics covered here include basic vocabulary, comparison of JOB settings for different survey styles, sequence for Total Station surveying, and references for useful documents.

The information presented assumes the reader:

    1. is familiar with the equipment and methods for surveying with a TSC2 and a complete GPS RTK survey setup

    2. is familiar with equipment and methods for surveying with a Total Station and any data collector 3. wants to know how to either:

    a. use the TSC2 with a total station only, or b. combine an RTK survey with a total station survey in one JOB

    4. has access to or will purchase a data cable to connect the TSC2 to a Total Station

    VOCABULARY

    JOB

    • a unique project that can contain many SURVEYS

    • the coordinate system and projection is defined here

    • each job should never have more than OI\IE autonomous position setup or base

    • if the base is setup over a known point with keyed in values, NO autonomous position is

    necessary

    • all other instrument setups should be established using traditional survey methods (resection,

    fs/bs

    • there should be no duplicate points in one job SURVEY

    • each survey is defined by the type of equipment used and the station setup

    • you may have different surveys to reflect different survey days, or different types of equipment SURVEY CONTROLLER

    • software used by Trimble data collectors SURVEY STLE

    • survey settings unique for type of equipment being used

    • defines communication frequencies, location of data logging, precisions, type of equipment, and whether info is automatically or manually entered

COMPARISON OF JOB SETTINGS BASED ON EQUIPMENT USED

The first step is to properly setup the JOB.

    RTK only

    • You do not need to use a coordinate system.

    • GPS points are recorded as VECTOR positions from the base station to the rover.

    • No projection/no datum is commonly used.

    • Some people will use a coordinate system in order to use GIS and mapping tools.

    • If you want to use the MAP menu in Survey Controller, you must use a grid coordinate system .

    • One survey style created for GPS can be used, i.e . RTK & Infill

    Total Station only

    • You can use a coordinate system BUT the points will not appear in the Points Manager. You will see null values or "?". The shots are being recorded and the relative elevations and distances are available once you download the survey into CAD or TGO.

    • To see point values in Survey Controller, use Scale Factor 1.0000.

    • Points are recorded as coordinates from a known coordinate position, the instrument station.

    • One survey style created for the total station can be used, i.e . SOKKIA

    Combined Equipment

    • You must use a coordinate system .

    • Two survey styles will be used: one created for the GPS; and, one created for the Total Station .

    SURVEY STYLES

You must create one survey style for the Total Station and one survey style for the GPS. These survey styles will be specific to the type of equ ipment in use. An example of the different setting options is shown below:

EQUIPMENT GPS Total Station SURVEY STYLE RTK & Infill SOKKIA SETTINGS Rover options Instrument

    Rover radio

    Base radio

    Laser rangefinder Laser rangefinder

    Topo pOint Topo point

    Observed control point

    Rapid point

    Continuous points

    Stakeout Stakeout

    Site calibration

    PP initialization times

    Duplicate point tolerance

    Duplicate point tolerance

    Traverse options

    CREATE A SURVEY STYLE

Many survey styles can be used depending on the hardware requirements and user defined settings. Most NRCS units have a survey style named "NRCS" or "RTK&lnfill". This is just a name. Check that the Rover options and Base options show survey type :"RTK & Infill" survey style. Use information specific to your unit for proper survey style settings. If it's working, use it. As long as you use an RTK Survey type, you can combine the GPS survey with a Total Station survey in one JOB and have similar errors .

    TO CHECK:

At the main Survey Controller menu, select "Configuration", select "Survey Styles"

Select name of survey style you want to check, i.e. NRCS or RTK & Infill Select " Rover options", view selection in Survey type: ... should be RTK & Infill, or RTK

    TOTAL STATION

Use the "Create A Conventional Survey Style For Use With Total Stations" document.

    START JOB AND SURVEY

Use the "Trimble Survey Controller Procedure Sheet, Working with Total Stations and Trimble Survey Controller" document.

Connect the Total Station to the TSC2 using a data cable. These cost about $100 and can be purchased from several different vendors. You need to specify the type of Total Station (Sokkia, Topcon, etc.). Some vendors:

    • California Survey and Drafting, Sacramento, www.csds.gov/

    • Western States Cabling, http://www.wscable.com/store/categories/28 TSCe

    • Pacific Survey, Medford, OR, http://www.pacificsurvey.com/
