The project will incorporate the historic Elektrociepłownia Powile building, a former power station that dates back to 1903. Featuring a perfectly balanced mix of elegant architecture adopted from the former power station with the contemporary design of the new buildings, the complex aspires to become one of the most sought-after developments in the Polish capital. BuroHappold Engineering was commissioned to undertake building services and structural engineering for the first stage of the project, which involved delivering the two multi-storey buildings that house 298 luxurious apartments and penthouses on the upper floors, with retail, restaurants and boutiques located on the ground levels. Careful consideration was paid to the materials used during the construction, with granite, marble, sandstone, exotic wood and glass selected to create the high-end finish required by the client and the architect. Landscaped gardens run between the buildings, further enhancing the connection with nature. The building envelope for each features a number of challenging, non-standard architectural elements, which required some innovative design from our team. Most of the apartments have balconies, which require large overhangs on each floor, with large terraces and communal areas requiring wide span, column free spaces. Our team achieved these by utilising reinforced concrete for the building form, ensuring that the unconventional architecture could be realised. Phase one of the development was completed in 2012, with the following phases ongoing. Designed to merge with its surroundings, Nowe Powisle embraces its waterside location while offering exceptional residential facilities for a thriving city population.
