SOUTH DOWN NEWSLETTER Letter from the President

As we are now into the fall season, the summer visitors have left and some resi-dents are heading to warmer places. Traditionally, this is a quiet time in the com-munity. As winter rolls in snowmobiling, skiing, snowboarding and snowshoeing become the recreational focus. It is important that we all continue to monitor the situation with COVID-19 and maintain precautions in order to protect the community. I would like to thank the

community for understanding the restrictions that were put in place; I know that this has been a very difficult time. Hopefully, things will return to normal sometime next year. South Down has experienced a significant increase in homes being sold this past year and the community continues to be in high demand. We have welcomed many new friends and families to our community, as well as said good bye and best wishes to all those who have departed. Our community continues to grow with the addition of a new village, Dar-win Place. We are lucky to be part of a wonderful community that remains financially secure, and

where many volunteer their time and effort for the benefit of us all. Thank you to all our volunteers who help keep our community a place we can all be proud of. A special thank you to those villages and individuals who have taken the time and effort to put up fall dec-orations; they really help to brighten our spirits. Thank you to everyone who took the time to attend the virtual annual meeting and for the questions; the feedback helps us focus on the issues that are important to the community. It is very important that the council and Executive Committee continue to get feedback as we make decisions going forward.

SOUTH DOWN NEWSLETTER Letter from the President The boat berth replacement project has been completed; thank you to the Boat Club board and the assis-tance from Irwin Marine. The project was completed on time and under budget. CCI did a great job in man-aging the bidding process and the construction. I hope you agree that the new facility is something we can be proud of and it is a huge asset to our community. Thanks to the members of the Boat Club this is a great example of how our community continues to improve the facilities. The beach wall repair and the addition of sand to the beach are the next large project. We hope to complete this project during the fall; however, the process requires permitting from the state and city which may delay the project until the spring. Thank you for all for your support and feedback this year, it is much appreciated. I wish you all a happy up-

coming holiday season.

SOUTH DOWN HOME & GARDEN CLUB

Home & Garden Club Members Decorated South Down for Fall and Held a Second “Pop-Up” Event

While the South Down Home & Garden Club has been fairly dormant, prevented by Covid considerations from gathering, long time members rallied together – socially distanced apart – to add a festive Fall feeling to key areas of South Down Shores. Under Judy Radley’s leadership, and joined by husband Chris, Patty and Greg Craig, Julie Bodenstab, Rita VanSteensburg, Kathie Hammel and Rose Hansford, the group volunteered to plant and decorate key areas to welcome the season with fall colors. Sharing with the community and giving back to the beautiful area in which we live is always an underlying theme in much of what this South Down/Long Bay Club endeavors to accomplish. And so, when summer blooms became old and tired, and stopped signaling the beauty of that season, this group of volunteers stepped up to deco-rate and welcome Fall to South Down Shores. You’ll see most of their work at the main entrance and at the corner of Outerbridge and Davidson Drives.

Also at the end of October, the club held a second Pop-Up event for the community. The first, held during the summer, was all about plants, tools and garden décor. This second one, in preparation for the winter months ahead, gave neighbors the chance to stock up on books and puzzles. The Home & Garden Club’s Activities Chairwomen, Susan Reilly and Julie Bodenstab, collect-ed donated books and puzzles in the days leading up to the “grab n’ go.” Dubbed “A Spooktacular Books & Puz-zles Grab ‘n’ Go,” the event

was set up at the school bus turnaround near the newspaper box on Outerbridge Drive on October 31. Community members were encouraged to stop and help themselves to books or puzzles to help make it through the winter of 2020. You’ll find more information about South Down’s Home & Garden

Club on the South Down website: www.sdshores.com.

LONG BAY NEWSLETTER Letter from the President

Fall is definitely in the air at Long Bay. With the change of seasons, we have all noticed things are quieting down. We are seeing fewer people than during the height of summer, particularly during the weekdays. Members of the Board and volunteers have been busy preparing our amenities for the winter. This has included covering and winterizing the pool and putting the pool and beach furniture in

a protected area. In the next few weeks, we expect to have the boat moorings and chains removed, checked and also stored for the winter. On that subject, Dick Bordwell has been continuing his work on seeking state permission for twenty additional mooring locations. Although we haven’t acquired permission yet, we are cautiously optimistic. Residents inter-ested in one of the limited available locations should contact Robin at Evergreen and will be asked to make a refundable deposit. The clubhouse renovation project is nearly complete. Director John Perkins reports the only remaining work involves completion of a few minor electrical items and installation of floor moldings. Residents have made a number of suggestions for use of this newly renovated facility next season. We have completed one resident survey regarding these suggestions and expect to circulate another. The Board will be considering the results of these surveys and welcomes additional input from any interested residents. During the winter, we will be making decisions regarding these suggestions. Our new treasurer, Susan Reilly, has continued her work on a top to bottom review of all our financials, with the help of our bookkeeper, Kandi Edson, and former treasurers, Dick Hassey and Jim Thompson. At Susan’s request, the Board has formed a finance committee consisting of Erin Sullivan and Peter Dreifus to assist Susan in the treasurer’s duties. At its last meeting, the Board voted to designate Erin Sullivan to fill Dick Hassey’s seat until the next annual meeting. We thank Erin for volunteering and are looking forward to working with him. We also have a newly formed security committee consisting of Joe Bayusik, Donna Bordwell, Doreen Carson, Brett Haven, Cliff Mason, Heather Sparano, Erin Sullivan, Bob Phillips, David & Kathy White, and Zina Talis. The Committee held its first meeting and recommended we install motion detection security lighting at the two beaches in the hopes of minimizing last season’s late-night problems in these areas. The Board is generally in favor of this request and is looking at the most economical way to accomplish this much-needed security sug-gestion. Board members, Jay Niederman, Susan Reilly and Heather Sparano had a very positive joint zoom meeting with members of South Down’s Executive Counsel. We discussed our common interest in security and hope to form a joint committee to plan for next year. We also all agreed to have a continuing dialogue on matters of concern to both communities. In the coming weeks, many of us at Long Bay and also at South Down are planning on heading south to warmer weather. I hope you all have a safe trip and, most important, a healthy winter season. Best Regards, Jay Niederman

President
