31st Sunday in Ordinary Time

“Behold, half of my possessions, Lord,

I shall give to the poor,

and if I have extorted anything from

anyone I shall repay it four times.”

Luke 19:1-10

As we approach the end of this liturgical year we find the

readings focusing on the end time, when Jesus will come again to

judge the living and dead. Our faith tells us that the world will

end with this final judgment. Paul writes to the Thessalonians

about their concerns over when this event would occur. These

letters predate the written gospels and show the early Church’s

preoccupation with this Final Judgment. Here we are 2000 years

later, and Jesus has still not come. But that doesn’t mean He

won’t. In the meantime we look at our lives to see how well we

live the gospel message.

In the gospel Zacchaeus finds salvation by reforming his

life. Jesus’ encounter with him marks the last time Jesus will

encounter a sinner before His triumphal entry into Jerusalem

that leads to His death on the Cross.

Jesus’ long journey toward Jerusalem in Luke’s gospel nears

its end. Soon Jesus will suffer, die and rise. We do not know when

our journey will end. But one day it will end. Are we ready?

Along the way Jesus lays down very harsh terms for those

who want to follow Him. For example, He tells His disciples to

abandon parents, give up your wealth, etc., and each time

someone who begs to follow Him hears these demands they

choose to go away. Zacchaeus becomes one who makes the

commitment.

Zacchaeus finds salvation, but what about us? We call

ourselves disciples of Jesus. Yet, how do we reflect that name

‘disciple’ in how we live our lives? Zacchaeus made hard choices

which involved giving up a comfortable lifestyle. What hard

choices have we made in our decision to follow Jesus?

Ascension of Our Lord Catholic Church

The Enthusiastic Steward

Have you ever been at a concert and rushed the stage to

get closer to your favorite act? Has your favorite sports

team won a championship, and you just wanted to

celebrate for hours? For those of us who are parents, have

you ever gone to great lengths to get the perfect photo at a

first Communion, graduation, or some other ceremony in

which your child was involved?

When moments in our life are filled with enthusiasm, we

can find ourselves overwhelmed and doing things we might

not normally do. I bet Zacchaeus didn’t have a regular habit

of climbing trees. However, he climbed one so he could see

Jesus more clearly. His enthusiasm led him up a tree, an

action he probably would not normally do.

Following Jesus Christ is not easy in this world of ours.

Trying to do it without feeling any enthusiasm makes it

doubly difficult. Enthusiasm is something that can be

grown, but we must be the ones who foster it. When we see

the fruits of our stewardship, enthusiasm grows. When we

spend time in prayer and in God’s Word getting to know

Jesus better, enthusiasm grows. When we work to make

Jesus the most important person in our life, enthusiasm

grows. If we find ourselves too often

with our feet on the ground and

growing in apathy, perhaps it is time

to do what it takes to bring on that

desire to climb a tree.

-Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS

Stewardship is Discipleship

Building a Future Full of Hope

As Catholics, we firmly believe that God has a plan for our

lives! He calls some to marriage, some to the priesthood, and

others to religious life. Some remain as generous single

people. Fully living our own vocations—and teaching young

people how to discern God’s call—is a serious duty, but also

a joyful one. Today begins National Vocation Awareness

Week. During this week, please pray about how God is calling

you to live your vocation more deeply. Encourage the young

people in your life—children, grandchildren, students, and

friends—to be open if God calls them to priesthood or

consecrated life.
