us and understand that he could be honest and we were going to love him anyway.” The growing process has continued since Ma@’s return home. Living together again has brought

opportunities to rebuild trust through new experiences. “It’s been wonderful to have Ma@hew home. He's a different person. He’s sober, honest, and he has a faith in God that's all his own.”

Le@ing go of the past and stepping into trust hasn’t been without challenges. “It’s still very hard to forget where we were when he left. Again, it’s about trusting. We have to trust that he's going to be safe.” Seeing the transformation in Ma@’s life offers reassurance. “Ma@hew is out there now trying to bring other people to the Lord, and that to us is a beautiful thing to us.” Earlier this year, Ma@ decided to go on a week-long mission trip to El Salvador. Dave and Carole joined the trip, and witnessed their son’s eagerness to speak about the Lord’s saving work in his life as he shared his testimony. “We realized the depth of the miracle God had performed in Ma@’s life. We have come full circle. From darkness into light. The fruit is Ma@hew’s desire to help others heal through the love of our Lord and Savior through his struggle.” Dave and Carole hope their son’s story can be an encouragement to other parents of young adults seeking healing. They are deeply grateful for the work that the Lord has done in their family through His Mansion. “The wonder in my mind is the people that He brings at exactly the right time. It’s just miraculous how the Lord uses brokenness for a beautiful purpose."

When Ma@ was in seventh grade, their church split and his family began a@ending an Evangelical Free church, where Dave and Carole were actively involved. Although Ma@ a@ended youth group and church with his family, his parents were unsure about his personal relationship with the Lord. From an early age, Ma@ struggled with social anxiety and depression. He was always very quiet and uncomfortable around people. Dave and Carole remember having to push him to get involved in joining group activities, like baseball. Ma@ loved playing, but it was only after adjusting to the social situation that he was able to enjoy it. As Ma@ grew, his struggles intensified. Things came to a head when he was in college, and he was wrestling with suicidal thoughts and drinking. Recognizing that Ma@ wasn’t healthy, his parents brought him home. "We had a sense that he was stuck. We had tried therapy for years and didn’t know what else to do. We were spinning our wheels and his depression was worsening.” Eventually, the Lord opened the door for Ma@ to come to His Mansion. The difficulty of being apart from their son helped Dave and Carole realize their need to trust in God’s sovereignty. Carole specifically recalls facing her own lack of control over Ma@’s care.

That’s the way it needed to be, but not the way it ever had been before. We really had to trust God, and that’s what grew us: that His plan is the right plan. It’s not the easy plan, but it’s by far the right plan. By the end of the first month, Dave and Carole began noticing a change in Ma@. “He grew in His ability to and desire to relate to other people. Ma@ came to terms with the shame he was carrying and began to understand the Lord’s love for him. He saw that he was forgiven and valued, and that he no longer needed to live in that shame.” Recognizing God’s tangible work in their son allowed Dave and Carole to enter a season of rest. The relationship between Ma@ and his parents evolved as the Lord worked in each of their hearts. Ma@ became more open during his time in the program. “He shared things with us when he was ready; things he never would have shared before. He started to trust
