“For which of you, intending to build a tower, does not first sit down and estimate the cost, to see

whether he has enough to complete it?”

- Luke 14:28

Jesus was annoyed with his followers. It seemed to him that they were taking things like building

a tower or waging war far more seriously than discipleship. At least, he pointed out to them,

when they considered undertaking those other tasks, they gave thoughtful consideration to all that

the commitment would entail, and made sure they would be able to follow through and complete

what they’d begun – before they started! Apparently some of Jesus’ followers had jumped in to

discipleship without carefully thinking through what discipleship really meant – which gave oth-

ers the impression that they weren’t really serious about their commitment. Jesus needed follow-

ers who were on fire for the gospel, AND, he needed followers who were thoughtful, committed

and willing to follow through on whatever undertaking they had begun. Jesus knew that some-

one’s ―yes‖ didn’t mean much if they never said ―no;‖ it more likely meant that they never

stopped to fully consider what their ―yeses‖ would entail.

There are an unlimited number of ways one can be a faithful follower of Jesus, but every one of

them requires a 100% commitment to the task to which one has said ―yes.‖

Are you following through on your commitments? Are you ―first sitting down to estimate the

cost‖ before saying ―yes‖ to a new project, a new ministry, or a new role? Remember, there is no

single person whom Jesus expects to do everything – that’s why the church is known as the body

of Christ, made up of many, many different individuals! Might it be more faithful to say ―no‖ to

some of your commitments so someone else who is looking for a way to engage in ministry, and

has counted the cost, has a chance to say ―yes‖?

Be God’s,

Pastor Bonnie

November 7 is National Friend Raising Sunday…

… and Shenkel UCC is participating! On Friday, November 5, a new

ad, ―Uniquely UCC‖ will be released to Keeping You ePosted subscrib-

ers. It will appear on the UCC’s Facebook, MySpace, Twitter and You-

Tube pages, and will also be available at UCC.org and shenkelucc.org.

You can forward this invitational video to family, friends, and

neighbors or you can just ASK folks to worship with you on Sunday, November 7th.

Never underestimate the power of personal invitation. The UCC congregation with the

most visitors overall and the most visitors per capita of membership will receive some

great prizes. Shenkel always extends a warm welcome to our visitors – let’s make No-

vember 7th a day to remember!

IN THE SOCIAL ROOM EVERYONE IS INVITED

Since November is our anniversary month, special

programs will be presented.

Work Camp Support Needed!

When the Confirmands and other members of the Youth Group go on their Work Camp

on November 19-21, one of their tasks will be to prepare and serve dinner on Saturday

night to the guests at Old First Reformed UCC’s shelter. They will be planning the menu

in early November, and would appreciate the congregation’s support of items for the

meal or a monetary contribution to cover their purchase.

Please contact Sherri Mocarski at 610-906-1373, or [email protected] by Sunday, November 7th if

you would like to help out.

In addition – some of the youth will be hosting the Old First Clothing Cupboard on Saturday morning. As the weather

gets colder, the men will especially be looking for items such as

hoodies

thermal underwear,

heavy socks

boots or leather shoes

men’s coats, hats, gloves and scarves.

Any items dropped off at church (there’s a table in Fellowship Hall for your contributions) before 5 pm on Friday, No-

vember 19, will be hand delivered to the Cupboard, and very likely distributed by our youth on Satur-

day morning!

Please keep our youth in your prayers as they spend the weekend in Philadelphia.

Thank you!

SAVE-A-TAPE PROGRAM

This is one of the easiest ways to help our

church financially!

Just ask for a Save-A-Tape card at the customer service spot

at your local Redner’s store, show your card at the register

when you check out, then bring your register tapes to church

and deposit them in the box in the Narthex. These tapes are

collected routinely, presented to the store, and Redner’s do-

nates a percentage of your total purchase to the church. Be

careful to bring your tapes in regularly instead of saving

them at home, as they do expire if not redeemed within a

certain time period. Also, please do not remove any part of

the receipt, otherwise, the register tape will not be accepted.

Easy money! Great job to you register tape savers.

Keep those register receipts coming!

HOLY COMMUNION

Shenkel UCC celebrates the sacrament of Holy Communion at both services

on the first Sunday of each month. Each time communion is served, some of

the bread and non-alcoholic wine that has been consecrated at the altar will

be saved in a traveling communion kit, ready to go to the homes or hospital

rooms of members who were unable to be present, and would like to receive the sacrament. Please let

Pastor Bonnie know if you, or someone you know, would appreciate ―distance-communing‖ with their

Shenkel Church family!

WORLD COMMUNITY DAY 2010 Building the Beloved Community

This year’s World Community Day honors the challenge

left to us by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. A gathering to re-

new our faith and commitment to this worthy goal will by

held on Friday, November 12 at St. James Lutheran

Church at 2:00 PM under the sponsorship of Pottstown

Church Women United.

Dr. King believed that economic justice can – indeed

MUST be earned by nonviolent means. His pragmatic

guidance, intended to be a way to solve serious conflicts,

is as relevant today as it was in his time. This celebration

will consider what Dr. King’s vision asks of us in our com-

munities as well as in our larger society.

LOOKING WAAAY AHEAD….

Boyertown Senior High School

will present

Phantom of the Opera on April 7, 8, 9 and 10, 2011

and can be obtained by contacting Vera Hoff at 610-

early!

Practices are underway for the Christ-mas musical "On Our Way to Bethle-hem" which will be presented to the congregation on Sunday, Dec. 19 at the 10:45 service (only one service that day).

The Chancel Choir will begin practic-ing their music for Advent/Hanging of the Greens/Christmas on Thursday, November 11 from 7-8:30pm. Prac-tices will continue on Nov. 18, (none on 11/25 - Thanksgiving) Dec. 2, Dec. 9, Dec. 16 and Dec. 23. If you'd like to sing during this season...please come to as many rehearsals as you are able. We would love to have you join us.

WHERE TWO OR THREE ARE GATHERED 9-26-10

Louise Jones

Where two or three are gathered in my Name

There I will be In the midst of them

Words echoed through the ages In chapels and sanctuaries

In small groups and large, At gravesides and hospital beds

Comforting words. No need for a multitude

Just two or three Gathered in faith and Christ is there

A certain connecting energy forms in the air

Or is it the still small voice of calm?

Each one aware of the Presence Named or simply felt

And so it was on a Sunday morning

In an adult class of Shenkel faithful

When a guest speaker would lay her laments bare before them

Anxious and uneasy, what would they think?

Dare she expose this wounded side of her soul?

Yet with each word, another face nodded with understanding

With every tear shed, a shared one was given

Oh, blessed saints of Shenkel,

Do you know how you bless lives?

Do you know that when tears turn to song

And you echo the notes, you help heal a fellow sojourner?

And a speaker who knows one can’t stay on the street named lament

Will also learn not to fear being on it

What a miraculous gift to impart

Oh, dear Ones gathered in His Name.

Your church nestled in the wildwood

Is so much more than stone and mortar

It is a sanctuary where prayer has soaked the walls

And Christ is in the midst of you

May you ever know the blessing

Of your willingness to go to places that hurt

And your faith that allows someone to share those wounds

And come away, a little more whole

Dear brothers and sisters who gather

at Shenkel United Church of Christ

Know that Christ is indeed ―in the house‖

And this writer has felt His Presence

And seen His face in your eyes, smiles, and open hearts

My love and gratitude, Louise Jones

STEWARD’S CORNER….

I happened to be a typical mouse in the corner back in September when that lady, Louise Jones, came to the adult Sunday School class and shared her story about "Amazing Grace". She writes beautiful poetry to include in her message. She loves our adult Sun-day school class, and they love when she comes to visit us. When she left, she went home and wrote a wonderful poem about "US". I was glad that Judy, our church secretary, put it in this month's newsletter. Here it is, a tribute to Shenkel church as we prepare to cele-brate our 173rd anniversary.
