Backed by a vision and a few
words of encouragement fromMahatma Gandhi, a visionary bythe name of K.M Munshi set up theBharatiya Vidya Bhavan in 1938.It’s been seventy-five years sincethen and the education trust nowoperates hundreds of schools andcolleges around the world.
On December 30th 2012 at theinauguration of the trust’s platinum
jubilee celebrations, PresidentPranab Mukherjee described Munshi,whose 125th birth anniversary wasalso celebrated this year, as one ofthe “dreamers” of modern India.
“Although he was a man ofsmall build, there was nothingsmall in what he achieved duringhis life time,” said Mukherjee.

The institution conferred itsrare honorary membership uponveteran Hindustani classicalsinger Kishori Amonkar, womenempowerment campaigner ElaBhatt and chairman of InfosysNarayan Murthy.
Among the 40 others whohave been bestowed with themembership before are the DalaiLama, Mother Teresa andC Rajagopalachari. In the past75 years, the Bharatiya Vidya
Bhavan has set up 395 constituentinstitutions and 122 centresspread across the country, whichteach engineering, commerce,science, arts, management, Indianculture, synthesis of science andhuman values and so on.
“The Bhavan is rooted, butremains relevant ot current timewith its newer programmes,”said Chavan.
The trust recently receivedRs.10 crore from the primeminister’s fund for its newprojects in tribal areas that willcater to 4,62,000 students.

Munshi devoted his entire energytowards promoting value-basededucation”, Dr. H R Bhardwaj,Governor of Karnataka hasobserved. The Bharatiya VidyaBhavan which he founded in1939, is an eloquent testimonyto this ardent devotion of his,he added.
Dr. Bhardwaj wasdelivering a special lecture atBanquet Hall of Rajbhavan,Bangalore on “Dr K M Munshi– His Life and Message” as partof his 125th birth anniversarycelebrations. The function wasorganised by the BangaloreKendra of Bhavan onDecember 30, 2012 his birthday.
Dr.Bhardwaj lamentedthat our education system itself
had failed. “Gurukulas whichthrived no longer existed.People looked to the Westwithout realizing that therewas a rich store of knowledgein our scriptures”, he rued.
Referring to this treasure-house of culture and tradition,the Governor said, ‘in themthere are commandmentsthat offer solutions to all ourproblems’, as evidenced inour puranas and other scripturalliterature. He averred that

Sri Munshi believed that thosespiritual values were invaluablefor our society and set up severalorganizations to practice them,the most important being theBhavan. ‘Without compromising
in his belief, he worked all hislife to uphold them, he said, addingat the same time he believed inall religions, convinced that theycollectively added towards theprogress of the country’.

Dr.Bhardwaj confessed thathe considered himself fortunatefor having been associated withSri Munshi when the latter hadretired from public life topractice law.
Earlier, Dr.Bhardwajreleased “Patanada Prabhutva’,a Kannada translation ofSri Munshi’s Gujrati novel“Patan Ni Prabhuta’. The workwas translated by the late SriNarayana Murthy and publishedby the Bangalore Centre.
Swami Sri HarshanandajiMaharaj, President of theSri Ramakrishna Math,Bangalore, who presidedover the function, recalled theyeomen service of Sri Munshiin the integration of Hyderabad
in the Indian Union. He saidthat the Bhavan set up bySri Munshi and the Ashramitself believe in the sametraditional values and haveshared good relationship forover 60 years.
While Sri K G Raghavan,Hon. Secretary of Bhavan,welcomed the gathering,Sri H R Anath, Vice President,proposed a vote of thanks.

Bhavan went a whole hog bytaking part in the centenarycelebrations of the renownedBharathanatyam exponent,Prof U S Krishna Rao, who inthe early years of the Kendraimparted lessons in the art inits Kala Bharathi classes.

Bhagavad Gita, the sacred
religious text of the Hinduspreaches the cosmic power ofKarma, besides prompting theyouth to develop a determinedapproach in life, according toSwami Sri. Iswarananda GirijiMaharaj of Samvit Sadhanayana,Mount Abu, Rajasthan.
The Swamiji was speakingon the importance of Gita atthe Gita Jayanti celebrationsjointly organized by the BharatiyaVidya Bhavan and the SamvitVikasa Kendra at Bhavan'sKhincha auditorium on Dec 23.He stressed the importance ofGita Parayana in these troubleddays.
The Swamiji belongs tothe order of Paramahamsassanctified by Acharya Adi Sankara.
The Swamiji explained thathe had accepted the invitationto attend the programme as it
related to the Bhagavad Gitawhich was a sermon given byLord Krishna to Arjuna on aVaikunta Ekadasi, hence the daycome to be known as Gita Jayanti.
Earlier, the Swamiji wasreceived with a “Purna Kumbha”by Sri. Ramesh. Prof S.N.Subba Rao, Officer on SpecialDuty of BVB welcomed thegathering and introduced theChief Guest. Sri. H.R. Ananth,Vice President, adorned theSwamiji with a shawl andgarlanded him.
