From the Baron & Baroness

Unto the populace of fair Aneala do Lachlahn and Jane send greetings, in hopes this missive finds you in good health and spirits as we approach the festive season of the year.

It has been a time of much coming and going, and we take this opportunity first to welcome our new champions - Lord Donnchadh Baillie, Champion of Rapier, Lord Jehan de Benne, Champion of Archers, and Lord Prospero ab Aqua, who stays with us now as Champion of Armoured Combat. We also wish to express our heartfelt thanks to Baroness Catherine, Sir Kane, and Lord Prospero for their efforts as our champions over the past year. We have high hopes of our current champions, and feel sure they will live up to the standard set by their predecessors.

We also bid farewell to Signora Catalina, our newly appointed ambassador to the Spanish Empire, and wish her well in her travels to her homeland, trusting that she will return to us in due time. We shall miss her company and her organisational skills! On a brighter note, our hearts are gladdened by the return of Alicia the Pastry Chef, looking much recovered from her recent misadventure.

As we write, we recall the valiant deeds displayed this day upon the field of combat during the College of St Basil's Challenge. All the challenges issued by the Barony were met with courage and skill by the College combatants, and a most enjoyable and entertaining day was had by all. We are particularly mindful of the efforts of Walter MacMahon, whose first event as steward shows immense promise. We recall, on this occasion, the words of good Queen Bess - "The end crowneth the work". We look forward to seeing great things from this young gentle.

In closing, good gentles, we leave you with more words from Her Majesty Elizabeth of England, which we feel particularly appropriate on the occasion of the November Crown Tourney - "What a family is without a steward, a ship without a pilot, a flock without a shepherd, a body without a head, the same, I think, is a kingdom without the health and safety of a good monarch."

I was thinking about where we are at with The Barony of Aneala. For a long time Aneala has been one of the most active groups in Lochac. This is not surprising as our nearest group is 32 hours away by car or 4 hours away by plane. In all, it’s a good group, with lots to offer anyone who would care to join. So what do you want from Aneala? What are you prepared to do to get it? Groups don’t just run themselves; they take officers and autocrats to make it all work. It doesn’t take a lot of work as there are so many officers to do a little each, but to remain a Barony Aneala needs a full slate of officers. We have a number of vacant offices right now and some with officers looking to hand on. Let’s look at what some of the officers’ roles are so you can pick the one for you. All officers at Baronial level are expected to hand on after 2 years, with a maximum term of 4 years if you’re having fun. Reeve (Book Keeper) Responsible for keeping the books Attend council with a current balance Give advice on financial spending to Council Help autocrats keep the financial reporting straight. Report up-line quarterly and at the end of financial year. No role at events, purely administrative.

Congratulations to all.

In one of the recent announcements of heraldic registrations you may have seen that several of Lochac's award names have been registered. But there were a couple that were returned; one of them was the Order of the Golden Lily for the following reason :-

“Lochac, Kingdom of. Order name Order of the Golden Lily.

Conflict with the "Order of the Golden Lily", Bosnia's highest military commendation. This order, according to "SFOR Stabilization Force" (http://www.nato.int/sfor/media/2004/ms040514.htm\) is not only this region's highest military honor, but carries with it a yearly stipend. As the highest military honor of a country much in the news of late, we feel this real-world order name is worthy of protection.”

So I am now on the hunt for an alternative name and thought that as it is an award for the whole Kingdom I should engage the Kingdom's populace and their creativity to find a new name for the order.

Here's your chance to have some input into your Kingdoms awards. I would like to hear ideas for the name of the Kingdom A&S award and will be taking them from now until November Crown where I will present the ones that are registrable to Their Majesties and Their Highnesses for Them to choose one.

The name must include the word Lily or Lilies.

It should follow period order naming practices (have a look at the Project Ordensnamen http://www.sca.org/heraldry/laurel/names/order/ to get an idea)

Addition of locative names (such as of Lochac) do not count as a point of difference.

To get the ball rolling, a couple of ideas are already put forward - Gilt Lily & Greek Lilies.

All suggestions will be considered and vetted for ability to be registered. It doesn't matter if you’re really new to the Society or a Proto-Dinosaur, if you have an idea for a name, please let me know.

To All Those Who May Consider Contesting November Crown

From Bartholomew and Katherine, Baron and Baroness of Southron Gaard, unto the noble and mighty populace of the Kingdom of Lochac, Greetings, Whereas the Barony of Southron Gaard has prospered due to the frequent and welcome visits of numerous Royal Visitors in recent years, and whereas the cost of ruling and travelling through this diverse and far-flung Kingdom is very significant, and since there is merit in encouraging more contenders to contest Crown Tournaments by lessening the perceived burden which would arise should they succeed in their endeavour: Let it be known that henceforth, to the winner of each November Crown tournament, the Barony of Southron Gaard will pay a purse of 500 gold, to be delivered into the victor's hands by way of a tallage, upon Their attendance at the Canterbury Faire which follows Their accession to the Throne of Lochac. This applies irrespective of Their normal abode or any prior arrangements They may have made to attend, and is in addition to whatever rights and privileges normally accompany Their presence as Monarchs at such an event. A Competition

Just because I can, I’m running a competition.

It’s going to be one of those old favourites, a “Caption this picture” competition.

The cleverest entry (as judged by the Chronicler) received by same before the end of November will win a prize, consisting of a gift voucher, to a usable value, at one of the larger bookstore chains.

What are the rules? Keep it clean. Innuendo is probably safe, but remember, I have to be able to print it in this family-friendly newsletter. Entries should be in writing, preferably e-mail. And that’s about it, really. Oh, and the Chronicler’s decision is final, and no discussion will be entered into.

To start you off in the right frame-of-mind (if there is such a thing) here’s a caption I “prepared earlier”.

Baronial A&S Competitions There were four competitions held at Bal d'Aneala.

The Cooks Guild competition had three entries. It was won by milord Benjamin with his May Eggs. This was his first SCA event. The Open Arts and Sciences competition had three entries. It was won by Rosalind de Peregrine with her Tudor garb. The competition for Best Costume in Anealan Colours had many entries. The winner in the Lady's category was milady Rosalind de Peregrine. The winner in the Lord's category was Baron David de Saxby whose apparel was made by Mistress Evelynne van der Haagen. The Golden Rose Bardic Competition had three entries. The winner and new Bard of Aneala is Baroness Catherine de Arc with "Can She Excuse My Wrongs" by John Dowland. In addition, Baroness Jane presented tokens to Baroness Catherine de Arc and Lord Lavaeolus of Saint Basil for their grace and skill at dancing. The artistic display did not end here. The music group performed a set of six dances and the singing group performed Lassie Lie Near Me. Lord Lavaeolus of Saint Basil performed his arrangement of the Anealan Processional, which was written by Master Crispin Sexi, ably accompanied by milady Angela, for the entry of the Baron and Baroness of Aneala. The dancers performed 33 dances, five of which were new to Bal d'Aneala this year. Milady Gillian Attwood was accepted into the Guild of the Silver Rondel. The winners of the competitions are to be congratulated for their fine efforts. All entrants are to be commended for the high standard of the competitions. All of the cooks and the entertainers for the evening are to be thanked for their great contribution to the evening. Bal d'Aneala has truly demonstrated the breadth and depth of the talent this Barony possesses in the arts and sciences.

An Opportunity! Are you looking for something more in the SCA? Are you interested in creating things? Have you considered becoming an Arts and Sciences Minister? The Arts and Sciences office is not especially difficult or demanding. You will be closely involved with everyone who is working on arts and sciences projects (almost everyone in the SCA at some point in time) and with Baronial A&S projects. You get your name in The Vine, and a shiny (almost) new officer’s medallion. If you become Aneala’s new A&S Minister you will be expected to: Be a member Report to the Lochac A&S Minister, the Anealan Seneschal and the Baron and Baroness every three months. This is quite simple and pro-forma reports are available. Arrange A&S competitions throughout the year. Attend council regularly so you know what is going on and what events you might need to organise A&S activities at. Keep an eye on the various regular A&S activities that are already happening so that you can report on them. In addition, you may wish to run workshops, regular classes, or a weekend of classes on a specific topic or a vast array of topics; you might want to put together an A&S newsletter or add to the articles on the Anealan website; or you might have other new and interesting ideas for encouraging the arts and sciences in Aneala. If you think you might have an interest in this office please ask me about it or speak to the Seneschal or the Baron and Baroness. Arts & Sciences Minister

The Vine is the newsletter of the Barony of Aneala, which is part of the Society for Creative Anachronism. As such, most of the content relates to the Barony and its Populace. However, it’s important to remember that the Barony is part of a much larger whole, which is why there are references in the Calendar and elsewhere to events and news from outside Aneala. If your SCA group (especially those west of the Nullarbor) is holding an event, please consider sending the information to me so that I can include it in The Vine, and post it on the Anealan Calendar. As you’ll see this issue, I’m continuing to add features to The Vine. Given the now near-ubiquity of Internet access, I’ve expanded the Web Resources section. There’s now a section for e-mail lists that are available, as well as a section for photographers. To use an oft-repeated phrase “a picture tells a thousand words”, and I think that a great way to let people know what we do is to show them pictures of us doing what we do best - playing SCA and having fun doing it. The competition continues to gather entries at a glacial pace. No, actually, glaciers move faster. Come on, how about some entries to make the Chronicler feel wanted, hey? AN ITALIAN CARNIVALE

Come join in the Masked street fair, and enjoy dancing, games and general frivolity incognito. (Did I mentions MASKS?) Attendance at a carnivale called for ALL to wear masks so that rank and identity could be hidden from all (just think of the mischief you can get up to wearing a MASK). Noble folk especially hid their identity so they could relax and enjoy themselves.

The event opens at 5pm, continuing until 10pm, when we must all scatter afore the Guard takes our revels to the cells.

Pavilions will be set up; however, you will need to bring your own seating, and, as always, something to eat off and drink out of. Hmm … in summer, liquid to drink is also good.

If you wish to raise your personal pavilion or banner you can either be on site from 3:30pm to raise it yourself, or give it Mistress Muirghein (north of the river) or Lady Sorcha (south of the river) BEFORE the day. If you choose to raise your pavilion yourself be aware that the stewarding team will tell you where you can put it.

Note that NO pavilions or banners may be raised after 4:45pm

Also note that we will not have access to the hall proper until 5pm.
