MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT!

Time sure flies when we are having fun. Once again we have been very busy!

Thanks to our field committee led by Sharon Albright we have had another year of great field events. Our training season is finished for this year and our hunt test was once again a very successful event. Lots of new dogs in the fields for the first time this year and lots of legs and titles earned. Look for the field page in the GRCA news next month. Thanks to Bob Kurtz for designing such a lovely page.

Another big year from our agility committee has also just been completed. Thanks to Nick DeCesare and his gang. They have had eight separate event days this year and have been the money raisers for the club as well as providing a great venue and trials for our competitors. I hear wonderful things everywhere I go about our agility trials. Thanks from all of us.

Our tracking committee is getting ready for our trial on November 10th. I hope we will have some Golden’s entered this year and we will have some celebrations by mid morning of the 10th. Thanks to Marie Huffman for chairing and Donna Thompson for hosting and being the secretary for the event. We will be looking forward to hearing the results.

Andy Moore is our nominating chairman and his committee will be looking for a number of members to volunteer to lead our club next year. Please contact Andy if you would like to serve on the board.

Sharon Ackerson is chairing our holiday party. Please contact her if you are willing to help.

Once again thanks to all who offer to help, we couldn’t be as great a club as we are or do as many things as we do if we didn’t have great volunteers. Please be sure to thank them all when you see them.

See you all at the holiday party! Debbie

The meeting was called to order at 7:30.

Board members present: Debra Barrows (president) Sharon Ackerson (Vice President), Clayton Kilrain (Treasurer) Penny Geddes, Morgan Francis, and Andy Moore (members- at- large). Suzanne Miller, Beth Sokohl, and Tricia Dunseith were absent

The minutes for July board and general meeting were approved

Treasurer’s Report: Attached are the Treasurer’s reports for the Carol Cassidy Seminar and the general reports for the months of July and August. A discussion was held concerning the loss of over $600 on the Carol Cassidy seminar. It was voted on that from now on a budget would be brought to the board for approval before any seminar was contracted for.

Match: Discussion was held on the eye seminar, CCA, CGC, and Match held at Sandy Selander’s home. It was noted that Pam Stirling and Sandy Selander did a beautiful job with these events and many comments were received from members of the club with very positive remarks.

Breed committee: All judges are under contract for our April specialty; all but one signature was on the contract for the grounds and that would be finally approved sometime next week.

Obedience committee: Rita Bumgardner agreed to be the obedience chairperson for the specialty in April.

Tracking committee: Marie Huffman will be the tracking chairman as Marge Paulding will have to work that weekend. Marge will get a note off to this year’s tracking class to ask for help as per the agreement to be a member of that class. The board also voted to once again offer a tracking class headed by Debbie Barrows and Clayton Kilrain if a deal could be made with the Oatlands Plantation to rent their fields again. Agility committee: All is ready for our next agility trial.

Field committee: They have a good number of entrants for the WC /WCX test this coming Saturday and that the Master’s level portion of our Hunt Test in October was already full.

Morgan showed our new club wear and reported a good amount was sold at our match. It will be offered at our WC/WCX test, hunt test, and our agility trial.

The board authorized a $100.00 donation to go to the Southern MD golden rescue and worked on a plan for further donations to be made during our November/December meetings.

The board also authorized a one page ad for the field issue of the GRCA news.

The next meeting will be held at the home of Sharon Ackerson

The meeting was adjourned at 9:15 p.m.

Report on the Dr. Townsend research clinic the weekend of September 7, 2013. Submitted by Pam Stirling, September 23, 2013

90 goldens participated in the two day event Of the 90, 55 were over the age of 7 – the oldest was 15 and ¾ years old. As PU is a late onset eye disease, it was particularly gratifying to Dr. Townsend that she was able to

examine as many older goldens as she was. She was also able to examine a number of goldens she first saw at the Altanta GRC National – again,

another plus for her research as monitoring the dogs is helpful to her research. 4 “control” goldens were identified – a number Dr. Townsend was thrilled with. “Control” goldens

are those identified as being 12 years or older without any cysts using both routine and then ultrasound eye exams. Since 70% of goldens have cysts and the dogs examined have to be 12 or over, the “control” universe is very limited.

The “set up” for the examinations went very smoothly. For future reference: o It’s important that Dr. Townsend have a space to herself that is very dark, has electricity,

and allows for privacy in discussion after the exams are finished. It also needs to have a light that can be turned on after the exam.

o It’s important that there be two individuals – veterinarians or veterinary technicians – who put eye drops in and draw blood in a separate, confined location.

o At Cheltenham, we had a tent with sides for drawing blood/eye drops and then used the equipment building for the eye exams. That worked very well. At Sandy Selander’s, the eye exams were done in a basement area and the blood draws/eye drops were done outside in an area that had sufficient natural light but also protection from outside activities.

o Finally, it’s important that the person who does the checking in of folks NOT be one of the individuals drawing blood. Because I was not doing those things, I could track down people in the field on Saturday or be a gatekeeper on Sunday, answer questions, etc. and basically keep things moving.

o Promoting the event was important. We used our yahoo email vehicle; I sent emails to other golden retriever clubs in the area; I sent individualized notes to breeders in our club asking them to spread the word to folks they’d sold puppies to; and I posted the information on my facebook page.

o Pre-registration is critical. I was able to set up a schedule so folks and their dogs did not have to stand in line for long periods of time. I was also able to make a notebook for Dr. Townsend each day which included, alphabetically by owner, three pieces of paper per dog stapled together: a blank piece of paper with the owner’s and dog’s name and age so Dr. Townsend could easily write notes to herself; the original consent form which she required; and a copy of the three generation pedigree she required. In most cases, folks just sent me a link to the pedigree on www.k9data.com and I printed the pedigree. All the information she needed was together and easy for her to keep track of.

o I allowed 10 minutes per exam. I asked folks to show up 15 minutes in advance – the eye drops took 15 minutes to work. That timing worked.

o We started at 9 and were done both days by 4:30. As she stayed at my house Saturday night, we saved my dogs for exams that night. It made for a long day.

o Clayton Kilrain saved the day by being willing to send the blood samples off Monday by federal express!

I would hope the club would be willing to invite Dr. Townsend to return in several years. Folks who had heard her seminar several years ago in Atlanta were pleased to learn at the seminar on Sunday that progress is being made.

If we do this again, a budget needs to be allocated for:

Technicians or veterinarians who are not club members. Because it was a two day event, I was able to snag several members to help Saturday and only pay one technician which I’m asking the club to reimburse me for. On Sunday, I paid two technicians from Loudoun Veterinary Service.

Food, drink and snacks for those workers though out the day. Dr. Townsend provided some of the supplies, but simple things like alcohol and wipes are needed. There’s a lot of copying involved. Dr. Townsend had handouts. She was willing to reimburse me

for the copying charges, but I wanted her to save her grant money for travel and research. I did a lot of copying from the computer for her notebook and I’m grateful I work at Loudoun Vet. Their xerox machine helped a lot.

This was a good thing to do and it went well. There were a number of folks who learned something about their dogs’ eyes early that they wouldn’t have if they hadn’t come. Sharon Albright should be congratulated on working so well with Cheltenham to make that area work well; Sandy Ziemski and Debbie Alls-Temples did a great job on Saturday drawing blood; Sandy Selander was great at creating an excellent place for us on Sunday; Michelle Lickey and Kelli Hawes from Loudoun Veterinary Service were awesome at keeping things going and drawing blood on Sunday; and Holly Kelley and Pam Simmons helped a lot at the table both Saturday and Sunday, freeing me up to track folks down and keep things moving.

SOUTHERN MARYLAND GOLDEN RETRIEVER RESCUE RECEIVES DONATION!!!!!!!!!

Mary Owens was the recipient of a $100.00 donation to the charity of her choice just by being a reader of the PVGRC newsletter. In the last issue of the newsletter members were asked to submit a short paragraph about their favorite charity and if chosen by the board a $100.00 donation would be given to the charity.

Mary chose a relatively new rescue group serving primarily Charles, Calvert and St. Mary’s counties. Mary supports the group with her art also.

Remember to read your newsletter, you might find something you like!

Agility Column Nick DeCesare

PVGRC held our first agility trial at our new venue, the Frederick Indoor Sports Center, on October 25-27. This was by far our largest trial ever with 587 runs on Friday, 660 runs on Saturday and 658 on Sunday for a total of 1905 for the three days. My sincere thanks to the following club members who made this trial such a huge success: Tricia Dunseith, Pam Turgeon, Sheri McAlevey, Sally Henry, Marta Coursey, Pat Kavanagh, Marge Paulding, Rita Bumgardner, John Bitner, Penny Geddes, Carol and Rory Nansel, Bev Porter, and a special thank you to Maureen Allnutt and Bob Crowley who came to work and didn't even have a dog entered. And a very big thank you to Sharon DeCesare who did all the volunteer worker coordination for the entire trial.

I received many nice compliments from multiple exhibitors but the best compliment came in a note in the mail from one of our judges, Don Wittke. Don wrote:

"Thanks for hosting a very nice trial and for asking me to be a part of it. Your trial ran so smoothly. There wasn't one time over the three days my ring had to wait for course builders or ring stewards. Please extend my appreciation and a "good job" to all of your club members who worked at the trial." Priceless.

We had three special events at the trials. Pam Turgeon and Bella (SUN BAY ISABELLA ROSE CD, RE, MXS, MJS, OF, CCA) earned their Master Agility Championship at our October trial!

Marge Paulding and Jackson (MACH2 ARCHX U-CH MIRASOL'S NOSE THE WAY UDX RAE2 GO VER TDX MXC MJC MFB TQX WC VCX) earned their Preferred Agility Championship also at our October trial. Jackson and Marge also earned their PAX at the Daughin trial the week before. There is nothing as sweet as getting a MACH or PACH at your club's trials.

Sheri McAlevey and Carly (MACH4 DEAUXQUEST HEART OD GOLD VCD1 RA MXG2 MJC2 AXP AJP) earned their MXP and MJP titles.

The agility committee would like to extend best wishes for rapid recoveries to Gary Arbegast and Jeff Ackerson who took some time off for some unscheduled repairs so they could run even faster on agility courses.

Planning is under way for our April, June and October 2014 agility trials. If our last trial in Frederick was any indication, our 2014 trials should also be very successful.

Until next year, run fast, run clean, and don't fall down!

TRACKING NEWS Marge Paulding (email brags to [email protected]) Brags I’ll start with the best news that I have to share ----- A NEW TRACKING title to report on. Yeah!.... Ken Weidel and his golden Rowdy (aka, Lycinan Rowdy Rascal) passed his TD on 9/29/13 at the tracking test sponsored by the Westie Club at Fair Hill, Md. He is now.…Lycinan Rowdy Rascal TD WC CCA CGC. Congrats to you both! Tracking News This newsletter is going to press about 10 days before PVGRC’s annual TD/TDX test. So no results to report on that event yet, but BIG thanks to Marie Huffman and Donna Thompson for all their efforts in hosting another successful PVGRC event on Sunday, 11/10/13. Thanks in advance for those club members who are helping with laying tracks, crosstracks, driving, and hospitality.

Tracking Dog Urban (TDU) The AKC will be offering a new “Optional” Titling Tracking Test, beginning 1/1/2014. I have included most of the AKC’s regulations regarding this new test below. To read the entire set of regs, you can find them on the AKC website at this link: https://classic.akc.org/events/tracking/tdu.cfm The test is supposed to be an urban version of the TD and was intended for areas that don't have enough or shrinking tracking fields.

Optional Titling Tracking Test Tracking Dog Urban (effective January 1, 2014)

The fundamental features of the Tracking Dog Urban (TDU) test are the dog’s ability to follow a track laid by a person under a variety of scenting conditions in an urban environment and to find the articles dropped by that person. This is an optional titling event. Clubs are not required to offer this test and dogs are not required to earn the title to enter a TD, TDX or VST tracking test.

Section 1. Eligibility. The TDU is for dogs not less than six (6) months of age that are eligible for entry and that meet the requirements of the following Section 2.

A dog may continue to participate in this test after it has earned the titles TD, TDU, TDX or VST. Dogs not holding any tracking title will be given priority for entry in the test by the tracking test secretary. A statement to this effect will appear in the premium list.

Section 3. Tracking Dog Urban Title. The AKC will issue a Tracking Dog Urban certificate and will permit use of the letters TDU after the name of each dog certified by two

judges to have passed a licensed or member club TDU test or any combined test that offers the TDU test.

As soon as a dog has been certified by the judges as passing a licensed or member TDU test, it may be entered in any licensed or member TDX or VST test for which the entries have not closed.

Section 4. Track Requirements. The following are the restrictions and minimum requirements for a TDU track:

1. The track must be at least 400 yards and not more than 500 yards in length. 2. The first turn must be at least 30 yards from the second flag. 3. The length of each of the legs thereafter must be at least 50 yards. 4. The track will have a minimum of two (2) different surfaces, vegetated and non-

vegetated. At least 10% but not more than 30% of the total length of the track will be plotted on non-vegetated surfaces. A track may be plotted on paved sidewalks, lightly traveled roads, baseball diamonds, parking lots and other non-vegetated surfaces. The track may cross areas devoid of vegetation as many times as necessary to fulfill the non-vegetated requirements. The start, and first turn must be plotted on a vegetated surface.

5. The scent on the track must be not less than thirty (30) minutes or more than two (2) hours old.

6. A total of three (3) to five (5) turns must be used and will include both left and right 90-degree angle turns.

7. At least two (2) of the turns must be 90-degree turns, and preferably more than two (2) such turns. Tracks having a total of three (3) turns are required to have three (3) 90-degree turns. No acute angle turns are to be used.

8. At least two (2) of the 90-degree turns will be well out in the open. 9. No turns will be plotted on non-vegetated surfaces. 10. No part of the track may be within 50 yards of any other part of the same track or

any other track. 11. A track will not cross a body of water that would be considered an obstacle in TDX.

No cross-tracks will be used. There will be no physical obstacles, barriers, or obstructions such as those used on a TDX track. Stair steps are not considered to be an obstacle.

12. Tracks may be laid in the vicinity of buildings and other structures such as fences, breezeways, ramps, stairs, bridges, shelters, roofed parking garages, courtyards, and buildings with two or more openings. Tracks will be as equal in complexity as possible in this regard.

Section 5. Start. The start will have a flag at the beginning and a second flag 30 yards from the first flag indicating the direction of the first leg.

The tracklayer will begin at least ten (10) yards from the starting flag, lining up with the starting flag and the second flag. The tracklayer will proceed along this line ensuring there is no turn at the starting flag. While walking this line, the tracklayer will pause momentarily at the first flag, drop the start article, then continue walking the track in the manner specified in Chapter 2, Section 10.

The start article will be fabric or leather and must be the approximate size of a glove or wallet. The handler may pick up the article at the starting flag and use it to give scent to the dog while on the track.

The test begins when the dog leaves the first flag. The initial 30 yards between the flags is part of the track; all requirements for the track apply. In this portion of the track, the handler may restrain the dog, but any leading or guiding of the dog constitutes grounds for calling the handler off the track and failing the dog. Provided the dog has not passed the second flag, the handler may request permission from the judges for a restart. If approved by the judges, the handler may restart the dog, either from their present location or after returning to the starting flag. Only one restart is permitted.

The handler may work no closer than 10 feet from the dog.

Section 6. Articles for a Tracking Dog Urban Test. The criteria for articles as contained in Chapter 2, Section 6, apply. The TDU test articles will consist of three (3) personal, dissimilar fabric or leather articles and will be the size of a glove or wallet. The second article will be dropped at least 30 yards from a turn approximately midway of the total length of the track as designated by the judges. The third article will be a glove or wallet and will be dropped at the end of the track.

Provided the dog has worked continuously and intently along the actual track, if an article is not found and cannot be located by the judges or tracklayer, the dog will be given credit for the article.

Section 7. General Requirements.

1. A TDU site totally or partially covered in snow does not meet the criteria of two (2) different surfaces and can not be used.

2. A TDU site must allow tracks to be plotted in such a manner as to be unpredictable from track to track and test to test.

3. Plotting an alternate track is not required. 4. The same tracklayer may not be used on contiguous tracks. 5. A tracklayer may cross an adjacent track in order to exit the area on test day

provided the track being crossed was not laid by the track layer or a member of the track layer’s household.

Report of the Tracking Test

Submitted by Marie Huffman, Test Chairman

Our November 10, 2013 is now history. It was a beautiful, sunny but cool and windy weekend. The test once again ran smoothly thanks to the many workers. There were approximately sixteen workers each day to make this event one we could be proud of. As Chairman of the test this year I would personally like to thank everyone. We had many who are not club members who helped us. The following club members worked:

Donna Thompson, Test Secretary

Sharon Kilrain, TDX Tracklayer

Clayton Kilrain, TDX Tracklayer

Ken Wiedel, TDX Tracklayer

Rita Bumgardner, TDX Cross Tracklayer

Joyce Riggs, TD Tracklayer

Hospitality/Food coordinators, Nancy & Jim Runion or Saturday

Hospitality/Food coordinator, Debbie Barrows on Sunday

Driver for Judges and Tracklayers, Lynn Pacenta on Saturday

Driver for Judges and Tracklayers, Melissa Landriau on Sunday

Many other club members provided food for our delicious breakfast and lunch.

There were two dogs entered in the TD, a GSD and a Bouvier, both passed the test.

There were three dogs entered in the TDX, a Golden, a Bouvier and a GSD. Unfortunately no TDX dog passed.

PVGRC Hunt Test

Our fall hunt test is in the books!!! It was hard to beat the weather…a few sprinkles on Saturday afternoon, but for our hunt test…this was as good as we could not have asked for better! This was the first time I have ever chaired an event for PVGRC (or any dog event for that matter), and the whole weekend went fairly smoothly!!! At the end of the weekend, the master judges commended the club for the level of participation from the club: “We have never judged a test where there were so many people willing to work, and the quality of work was outstanding!”

I would be remiss if I didn’t thank a few people individually…Sharon Albright, for being the Test Secretary, and making sure the junior and senior stakes ran smoothly…Judy Gladson, for being in charge of the birds (which played a huge role in completely the very larges tests in a timely manner!)…Megan Baker for helping wherever it needed it the most…Andy Moore for making sure all the equipment was there, moved for each series, and then got picked up after most people were on their way home…Wayne Kulig, for being the gun captain, and having a fantastic result of very few no birds!!!...Pam Turgeon, for working not two full days, but three full days, and filling in wherever needed…Rita Bumgardner…for being in charge of the hospitality…and Leslie Peszczynski and Eric Hess, for volunteering for both days….and working the ENTIRE day….sometimes at a station all by themselves!!!

In the master stake, there were 40 passes out of 56 entries with 6 scratches. In the senior stake, there were 12 passes out of 23 entries, and in the junior stake, there were 33 passes and 4 scratches with 61 entries.

Again, thank you to all the volunteers who helped all weekend. It was refreshing to see so many new people volunteering, and I hope they will continue to participate and volunteer in the field!!

HOW WOULD YOU SCORE THIS BLIND??? (Another interesting insight from Megan Baker)

Senior Blind from this past weekend at the Back Bay/Knotts Island Hunt test in Remington, Va. Please keep in mind every judge is different, and you have two judges during an event. Please feel free to Judge what you think it should be and email me your answers ([email protected]). I will have three judges score this blind, and we will discuss in the next newsletter.

Dog 1

Trainability / Perseverance. Both GOOD as the dog did a great job

Dog 2

Three parts to this blind,

1. Initial Line was good. a. Perseverance was good on initial line. b. Trainability was good as the dog went.

2. Dog started to cave in to the land a. Perseverance score would come down b. But Handler sat the dog and put him / her back on line

3. Put the dog back on line as it should be. Trainability still ok as the dog listened to the handler and worked as a team.

Dog 3

In addition to the handler waiting too long to put the dog back on line….

The dog does what is called scalloping. Training ability and Perseverance would both get lowered in this case as the dog didn’t really take the cast or persevere very far.

Dog 4

The Green circle is a POP – Dog stopped to look at the handler. This would be points off in perseverance. The purple circles are where the handler blew the whistle and tried to give a cast. Again perseverance would be low as the dog didn’t take the cast.

Dog 5

Remember every time you blow your whistle and the dog doesn’t respond (Turn and Sit on land/turn and tread on water) that is points off in trainability – All the green dots are WHISTLE Refusals. This blind would probably FAIL for Lack of Trainability and Perseverance.

Obedience Brags: John Cotter's dog Ellie (Mirasol's A Berry Elegant Lady CDX SH WCX) just earned her CDX leg 2 at the GRCA Central Regional in Michigan on 9/12 with a first place and the 3rd leg at the Ft. Detroit GRC specialty on 9/13 with a second place.

In addition, she qualified for the Triathlon award by placing in Gun Dog Sweepstakes and passing the WCX event.

Nancy and Wayne Kulig reports that Topbrass Commander WC CD RE BN CGC CCA (Conor) was awarded his CD title, qualifying at the Hyattsville Dog Training Club trials on 9/21 and 9/22, and the Mount Vernon Dog Training Club trial on 10/5. Conor was also awarded a second place and two third place ribbons at the trials, competing against 8-10 other dogs in Novice A.

Denise Buscemi Perrego reports that Sun Bay's The One and Only owned and bred by Barbara Clem finished her Rally Novice title on 9/22/13 at the Canine Training Association Hyattsville and also reports that Sun Bay's Ready For Sunshine owned by Denise Buscemi Perrego and Michael Perrego earned his Rally Novice title on 9/22/13 at the Canine Training Association Hyattsville as well. .

Pam Turgeon and Wakemup Wild Child BN JH WC earned both their CD and their RA at the Salisbury shows…six shows, six qualifying rounds, six placements!!! Lycinan Rowdy Rascal CD TD WC CCA CGC and Ken Wiedel passed their final leg of Novice B at the Chesapeake Golden Retriever Club Obedience trial at Forest Hill, Md. He was 4th in his class of 10 and the Second highest Golden in his class. Happydaugh’s Clearwater Revival and Leslie Darragh earned and first place and a High in Trial at the Chesapeake Golden Retriever Club Obedience Trial for their first Novice leg.
