Don’t Let Tragedy Strike

It just takes a minute and then tragedy strikes- a beloved pet is gone – stolen from the yard. Dogs are stolen for various reasons. The thieves wait for a reward to be posted and return the dog and collect the reward. At least the pet is returned. But many times, dogs are stolen for very cruel purposes such as being used as bait in dog fighting rings, used in cult rituals, sold to laboratories for research, etc. Even if a yard is fenced in, the thieves will see a sweet, good-natured dog and will figure out a way to get in and steal the pet. The stolen dog will probably meet an awful end full of fear and pain. There will be an ache in the owner’s heart forever not knowing what happened to their beloved pet. As a pet owner, the above scenario can be avoided by never leaving the dog outside alone even if you have a fence or invisible fence. If the yard is fenced the gate should be locked. In addition to dog theft, there are

many other reasons a dog should not be alone. Fear of storms, another dog across the street, a squirrel, etc can cause the dog to bolt into traffic. Delivery trucks, meter readers, etc could accidentally hit the dog. People walking by could tease the dog or even injure it. Bee stings, poisoning, stray dog or coyote attacks, etc require immediate medical attention and if the dog is outside alone no one may discover the dog desperately in need of a veterinarian until it is too late. These are just a few of the reasons the dog should not be alone. In addition it is imperative to have ID tags on the dog as well as a dog license to help ensure a safe return if lost. An added prevention is to have the pet micro chipped. For the safety of your dog, absolutely never leave your dog outside unattended.

Winter Fun

Protect Those Paws

Golden Tales Winter 2010

Dogs need exercise throughout the winter months as much as the rest of the year. Even taking your dog for a drive can help alleviate some of that cabin fever frustration. It’s better than them chewing off the legs of the sofa in a fit of cabin fever. So, zip up the coat, pull on the boots, grab the leash and head outside.

Activities as simple as running through the snow, playing snow Frisbee, chasing snowballs, hide and seek with a favorite toy in the snow or taking a short walk will keep your dog in shape and happy.

If you are a little more adventurous you might try skijoring or snowshoe hiking.

Finding the right gear for your dog to safely and comfortably enjoy the outdoors in winter is important. Dog booties are the best protection for feet. Most dogs will protest, pull off and high step the minute the boots are put on. So desensitize them to the new footwear indoors before heading out. They usually become accustomed to the boots, especially when they know it means a fun outing just ahead. If boots are just not your dog’s thing you can try a natural wax product made for dogs feet. Musher’s Secret is like an invisible boot made from natural wax.

Skijoring combines cross county skiing and dog mushing. The activity involves attaching one to three dogs wearing a harness to a person wearing a belt on cross county skis.

Snowshoe hiking is just that you put on a pair of snowshoes and off you go.

If you are trying a new activity, make sure you do your research and prepare the proper equipment and gear for both you and your dog.

If you think that there might be any reason why your dog would have issues exercising outdoors, take it to the vet first for a routine physical checkup and ask your vet if they would consider outdoor exercise a healthy activity for your dog.

Wax applied on the pads and between the toes prevents the harmful effects of ice, snow and salt on the foot. It also helps prevent the formation of ice balls between the toes. You can further help reduce the build up of snow and ice between the pads and toes by cutting the long hair that grows between the pads and toes. Cut the hair on the bottom of the foot so that it is even with the pads and cut the hair between the toes even with the surface of the foot. Next, trim the hair from around the edge of the foot and trim any long feathering so that it does not drag across the ground.

amount of time left but they don’t realize this and make the most of each day, and we should follow their lead. A puppy may immediately win your heart, but some might find themselves not so enthusiastic about the challenges presented by a young, physically strong, energetic, and demanding of your time puppy. The sweet, grey-muzzled Goldens take their own time in adapting to life in a new home, but once settled in they will fill your heart with love. They are still eager to go for walks but won’t drag you down the street. They may chase squirrels and bunnies but give up way before they reach the end of the yard. They are still playful and will enjoy a short game of ball. They will snooze the

About Our Organization… We rescued 120 Goldens last year at a cost of $50,000. The majority of that was spent on veterinary care; vaccinations, spay/neuter, wellness exams. We also provided extraordinary Vet care for heartworm treatment, broken bones, mass removals, hip replacement, knee surgery, and eye surgery for a cost of $15,000. We provided hospice care for 6 seniors who lived the remainder of their days being loved and comforted by a foster family.

day away patiently waiting for you to return home. They are content to just be in your company. It’s hard to say goodbye whether you’ve had a dog for one day or fifteen years. Grief is never easy or over soon enough. But an unwanted dog will, perhaps for the first time, know love, safety and contentment in it’s final days, weeks or years because you had the courage to face that grief on its behalf.

The truth is without your support none of these dogs would have had a second chance at living a life every dog deserves, yearning for a place in a family that loves them. Thank you for your support over the previous year. Thank you to the volunteers who help staff our events, the foster families who open their hearts and homes, and the people who have supported us with their hard earned money. You have made a difference in the lives of our Golden Treasures.
