UN Day PromotesPeaceNearly 1,000 Rotarians,
UN officials, Rotary youthprogram participants, andguests gathered at theUnited Nations in NewYork City on 3 Novemberto hear panelists discussways to advance globalpeace. The annual Rotary-UN
Day event drew slightlyfewer people than usualthis year because ofdisruptions caused byHurricane Sandy, whichhad slammed into theNortheastern United Statesseveral days earlier. Butthose who were able toattend celebrated therelationship between thetwo organizations, whichdates back to 1945, whenRotary members acted asdelegates, advisers, andconsultants to the UnitedNations Charterconference.During the opening
panel, RI President SakujiTanaka said therelationship between thetwo organizations is anatural and enduringconnection because bothare committed to peace.“I truly believe that the
world today is a betterplace with Rotary and the
United nations in it,”Tanaka said. “Neither theUnited Nations nor Rotaryis in a position to solve allof humanity’s problems. But that is not our goal. Our goal is simply to makethings better. We take whatwe have, and do what wecan.”Tanaka, who chose the
RI theme of PeaceThrough Service for hisyear in office, said there isa connection betweenservice and peace. “It hasto do with caring for otherpeople and understandingtheir needs.”“When we recognize that
the purpose of our lives isbeing helpful to others, itchanges the way we feelabout other people,” hesaid. “If our goal is service,we do not want to argue orfight. We want to livetogether in peace, andhave greater inner peaceourselves.”Rotary Foundation
Trustee Chair Wilfrid J.Wilkinson asked attendeesto continue to advocate fora polio-free world and tokeep up the momentumtoward eradicating thedisease. In doing so, hesaid Rotary and the UN willbe building a world ofpeace.“We can create one of
the great miracles of polioeradication: days oftranquility, when thoseinvolved in an armedconflict call a cease-fire toallow children access tohealth care,” Wilkinsonsaid. “To save childrenfrom polio, we’veconvinced people to laydown their arms inAfghanistan, SouthernSudan, and Somalia. That’s something no oneelse has been able to do.And if that’s not practicingpeace, I don’t know whatis.”
