32nd Sunday Ordinary Time ~ The moment that some people open their mouths they find that they have gotten themselves into a ‘tight pinch’ – that is, what they are about to say will almost certainly put them in a bad place with one side or the other – they clearly are ‘stuck in between’. That often happened with Jesus, and many times he purposely put himself there; for he had no problem challenging people right from the center of that tight pinch. But
today, as also was often the case, others were either plotting against him or just spontaneously put him there in the middle. The Sadducees and Pharisees had gotten into an argument about the resurrection. Sadducees, believing only in the Torah, were not open to the question of a resurrection while the Pharisees were. Seeing Jesus, they dragged him right into the middle of the argument putting him in a tight pinch; for any answer he gave was surely to leave ½ of his audience squarely at odds with him. Jesus dove right in. His clearest point appealed to the Torah as he focused immediately on Moses when he called out to “the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob”; and he added that “he is not God of the dead, but of the living, for to him all are alive." He could not have affirmed more powerfully the eternal reality of God by simply proclaiming: “for to him (God) all are alive.” ‘Resurrection’ and ‘eternal life’ clearly are about relationship with God. Jesus always spoke of these things not as future but as ‘now’. “He is God of the living” reveals ‘relationship’ and ‘being with’ God. It supersedes time. It goes beyond any and all boundaries. To limit God even by death is to put boundaries on the eternal one. Whether the Sadducees agreed or not was not so important as to recognize the case that Jesus made for God in all of his greatness. This is beautifully proclaimed in the first reading from Maccabees when ‘7’ brothers are being put to death by the king. There is no hesitation, no doubt, no question nor remorse. The feelings and belief of all seven are summed up in the proclamation of one of the brothers: "You accursed fiend, you are depriving us of this present life, but the King of the world will raise us up to live again forever. It is for his laws that we are dying." Jesus, as usual, also hits the nail right on the head. He zeros in on the most important truth. He speaks not of a static idea of resurrection but the whole basis for why we can believe in it in the first place. It is all based on our relationship with this God. He is eternal, and so is his love. He is alive and in him we find life. Eternity for him is best expressed in the moment because to be with him or ‘lost’ in him in the moment is life – it is forever. He truly is God “of the living, for to him all are alive.”

VETERAN’S BOARD
For Veteran’s Day the Church would like to refresh our board showing active military personnel from the parish. If you have an active military member in your family or know someone in the parish who is on active duty please leave a
picture with their name at the parish office so the Altar Society can display it in the church. Please bring the picture to the office by November 7th.
SAINT VINCENT DE PAUL —THANKSGIVING
On Thursday, November 10, the St. Vincent de
Paul Conference will be accepting applications at
the Pastoral Center from 1—6PM for low-income families living
within our parish in order to help them celebrate Thanksgiving Day. Applications will also be taken on Saturday, Nov., 12 from
9:00a.m. to 12:00noon at the Parish Office. All applicants need to
bring a personal identification with them.
The Church office and all Meeting Rooms will be closed on Friday, November 11 in obser-vance of Veterans Day.
“EAST L.A. PREGNANCY CENTER” ~ BABY BOTTLE DRIVE
This weekend, ELAPC, a pro-life non-profit organization will be holding their Annual Baby Bottle Drive here. They will distribute baby bottles outside the Church for your
contributions. This helps greatly, not only in providing with several services to mothers and babies, but in saving the lives of our most vulnerable members of society! 32 ° Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario ~ Al momento en que algunas personas abren la boca, encuentran que se han metido en un "aprieto" - es decir, que lo que van a decir casi seguramente los pondrá en apuros con uno u otro lado; realmente se meten en ‘aprietos’. Eso a menudo sucedía con Jesús, y con frecuencia lo hacía deliberadamente pues no tenia ningún problema en desafiar a la gente cuando se encontraba en medio del
atolladero. Hoy, igual que otras veces, se estaba conspirando contra él o simple y sencillamente lo quicieron poner en evidencia. Los saduceos y los fariseos habían entrado en una discusión sobre la resurrección. Los saduceos, creyentes solo del Tora, no estaban abiertos a discusión sobre la resurrección mientras los fariseos si lo estaban. Al ver a Jesús, lo llevaron al centro de la discusión con la intención de ponerlo en aprietos; cualquier respuesta que diera seguramente iba a dejar a la mitad de su audiencia claramente en desacuerdo con él. Jesús se sumergió en la discusión En su punto más claro apeló al Tora al enfocarse inmediatamente en Moisés cuando llamó al “Señor Dios de Abraham, Dios de Isaac y Dios de Jacob"; y añadió que "Dios no es Dios de muertos, sino de vivos, pues para él todos viven”. No podría haber afirmado más poderosamente la realidad eterna de Dios simplemente proclamando: "Pues para él (Dios) todos viven” ‘La Resurrección’ y la ‘vida eterna’ se refieren claramente a la relación con Dios. Jesús siempre habló de estas cosas no como un futuro sino como un ‘hoy’. La frase: "Él es Dios de los vivos" revela ‘relación’ y ‘estar con’ Dios, supera al tiempo, y va más allá de cualquier límite. El limitar a Dios, incluso por la muerte es poner límites al Dios eterno. Si los saduceos estaban de acuerdo o no, no era tan importante como reconocer lo que Jesús hizo por Dios en toda su grandeza. Esto es bellamente proclamado en la primer lectura de los Macabeos cuando los siete hermanos están siendo asesinados por el rey. No hay vacilación, no hay duda, ni remordimiento. Los sentimientos y creencias de los siete se resumen en la proclamación de uno de los hermanos: "Asesino, tú nos arrancas la vida presente, pero el rey del universo nos resucitará a una vida eterna, puesto que morimos por fidelidad a sus leyes”. Jesús, como de costumbre, le da al clavo justo en la cabeza, se acerca a la verdad más importante, no habla de una idea estática de la resurrección, sino de toda la base para que podamos creer en ella antes que nada. Todo está basado en nuestra relación con este Dios. Él es eterno, igual que su amor. Está vivo y en Él encontramos la vida. La eternidad para Él se expresa mejor en el momento porque estar con Él o ‘perdido’ en Él en el momento es vida; es para siempre. Él es verdaderamente Dios "de vivos, pues para Él todos viven”
