Greetings from the WHL

A Welcome from the President

Welcome back to another exciting year of Kootenay ICE Hockey. With the way the Hockey Club finished last year the 2013-2014 season has the potential to be very special. Mirrored in last place at Christmas, the Club posted the fifth best record in the WHL in the second half of the season and made the playoffs for a 15th straight year, while finishing with a .500 or better record for a 14th consecutive season (which are both the longest active streaks in the WHL).

Our organization has been very fortunate since moving to Cranbrook to enjoy an unparalleled amount of on ice success. This year for the first time in franchise history one of our players has the potential to be the first overall selection in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft. With that comes added pressure to perform, but with reigning WHL Coach of the Year, Ryan McGill leading our team, Sam Reinhart and the rest of the players will receive the necessary guidance and leadership in achieving all of their goals.

With the invaluable experience our team gained last season, we expect our returning players along with our new prospects to once again battle for contention in the very competitive Eastern Conference. Our expectations of success both on and off the ice will not change. Our fans have come to expect a team that is hard working on the ice and ambassadors for Cranbrook and the entire East Kootenay region off the ice.

On behalf of the entire organization, welcome back and I hope you enjoy the game.

Jeff Chynoweth, President & Governor

TONIGHT’S OPPONENTSEASON-AT-A-GLANCE: The Edmonton Oil Kings make their first visit of the season to Cranbrook tonight to take on the Kootenay Ice having won 10 of their past 13 games. The Oil Kings (15-9-0-1) sit sixth in the Eastern Conference, but could vault into fourth with a win tonight.LAST GAME: Despite a dominant performance, the Oil Kings just snuck past the Lethbridge Hurricanes 2-1 Friday night in Lethbridge. It took 53:47 and 42 shots for Edmonton to find a way past Hurricanes netminder Corbin Boes, but Mitch Moroz finally banged home a second effort to tie the game 1-1. Minutes later Curtis Lazar struck again for the Oil Kings to give them the victory. Tristan Jarry made 15 saves for his14th win of the season.

REGULAR SEASON LEADERS: Mitch Moroz - 17 Goals; Henrik Samuelsson - 23 Assists; Henrik Samuelsson – 33 Points; Curtis Lazar – plus-20; Curtis Lazar - 5 GWG; Brett Pollock - 5 PPG; Cody Corbett & Henrik Samuelsson - 5 PPA; Edgars Kulda & Curtis Lazar – 1 SHG; Three Players Tied – 1 SHA; Mitch Moroz – 74 PIM

SPECIAL TEAMS: The Oil Kings power play went 0-5 Friday night and now sits at 15% on the season, 20th in the WHL. The Oil Kings penalty kill, meanwhile, is third in the league at 84.4% after going 4-5 against Lethbridge.

THIS SEASON VS. KOOTENAY: The Oil Kings split a pair of games with the Ice at Rexall Place in mid-October to carry a 1-1-0-0 record in the season series into tonight’s game. Hudson Elynuik’s first WHL goal with 2:51 left lifted the Ice past the Oil Kings 4-3 in the first game despite goals from Curtis Lazar, Mitch Moroz and Henrik Samuelsson and 26 saves by Tyler Santos. The next day, however, it was Henrik Samuelsson’s overtime heroics that capped a 3-2 Edmonton victory.

DEALING: The Oil Kings swung a trade Thursday, sending 19-year-old defenceman Stephen Shmoorkoff to the Swift Current Broncos in exchange for a conditional 4th round pick in 2015 and the rights to goaltender Alec Dillon. Dillon has a 9-2-2 record with the BCHL’s Victoria Grizzlies this season over 13 games.

SHOOTING GALLERY: Through 25 games, the Oil Kings have outshot their opponents 907-675, an average of 9.3 shots per game. The Oil Kings have led on the shot clock 19 times this season and are 12-6-0-1 when outshooting their opponents.

STINGY: A big reason why the Oil Kings boast the fewest goals against in the Eastern Conference is the play of netminder Tristan Jarry. The 18-year-old Pittsburgh Penguins prospect leads the WHL with a 2.03 goals-against average and has not allowed more than two goals in a game since October 5, a span of 15 starts.
