“Therefore stay awake! For you do not know on which

day your Lord will come.” - St. Matthew

If I could live my childhood over again, and belong to one organization, I would have liked to have been a member of the Boy Scouts. I remember coming home in grade school with the papers for being a Cub Scout. At that early age, I knew it was a long-shot. As they say in politics, it “died in committee”. Mother dismissed the idea before it even could be brought up to my Dad.

Over the years, I have participated in numerus Eagle Scout awards as a pastor and I also worked with some great Scouts who took on projects that would benefit the parishes I was serving at the time. Some of my best servers over the years were both Boy Scouts as well as Girl Scouts. Regardless if you have any interest in Scouting or not, nearly all have heard of the Boy Scouts motto: “BE PREPARED”!

Baden-Powell, the founder of Scouting, was once asked about his motto. Someone asked him, “BE PREPARED FOR WHAT?” The founder replied, “WHY FOR ANY OLD THING!” There is little doubt that the first-aid instruction that a Scout receives is to be “BE PREPARED” when someone has an accident. Because of the life-saving practices a Scout is taught, he might also be able to save a non-swimmer or a drowning person who has fallen into deep water.

But Baden-Powell was not thinking only of “physical” preparation such as in an emergency. His idea was that all Scouts should be “prepared” emotionally, and even spiritually, to be productive citizens and bring joy to the people around them. He wanted each and every Scout to be “prepared” BOTH in MIND and SPIRIT for any struggles that they encountered in life.

So, in totality, the Scout motto, “BE PREPARED…” is really, “BE PREPARED FOR LIFE”. The Scout motto is also parallel to this particular spiritual season that we have just entered called Advent. For, if there were a motto for the

Advent season, it might be similar to the Scouts and could possibly be: BE PREPARED FOR LIFE, DEATH AND EVERLASTING LIFE!

If there is one similarity shared between this secular time that we call the “Holiday Season” and the sacred time of the Church we call the “Holy Season of Advent”, it is that both are times of INTENSE PREPARATION; one is physical and the other is spiritual.

The readings for this First Sunday of Advent address the full spectrum of “spiritual preparation”. For in the First Reading from the Prophet Isaiah, the Good News rests in the “joy” of BEING WELL PREPARED for the Lord’s coming. For the prophet Isaiah writes: “…Many people shall come and say, ‘Come, let us climb the Lord’s mountain, that He may instruct us in His ways and, and we may walk in his paths.’” Psalm 122 affirms the Good News of the “joy” of “preparation” with the refrain that reads: “Let us go rejoicing to the house of the Lord.”

The Gospel from St. Matthew reveals the other end of the spectrum of “preparation”. For Jesus begins by citing the story of the Old Testament of Noah, where Noah “prepared” for God’s punishing waters by building an ark while others did no “preparation”, ending poorly for them. For Jesus says: “They did not know until the flood came and carried them all away.” From this tragic story, Jesus then talks about the end of time and how many will also not be “prepared”. The Good News of the Son of God is by the spiritual warning He gives to his listeners: “STAY AWAKE”!

The Second Reading from St. Paul tells us how to “STAY AWAKE”, spiritually speaking. For St. Paul tells the Romans and us that the way to stay awake is by “throwing off the works of darkness…” (that include) “…orgies, drunkenness, promiscuity, lust, rivalry and jealousy”. We can be “PREPARED TO STAY AWAKE SPIRITUALLY’ in Advent of 2016, by being open to receiving the Sacrament of Reconciliation. For many of us it has not been days or weeks, but decades since we last celebrated this important sacrament of spiritual “preparation”. Yet recall that every week we say in our creed, our belief in “the forgiveness of sins”. Equally, how can we say that we believe in some of the sacraments but not all of the sacraments?

May this Advent of 2016 be more than just a time of “physical preparation” for the Feast of Christmas, but more so a time of “spiritual preparation” for the final marriage feast in the Kingdom of everlasting life! Happy Advent!

Again this week we had another good week of stewardship. Thank you for your extra generous spirit towards the work of the missions and also to the ECHO Food Shelf. There are great graces from God when we help the poor in our midst.

Please continue to consider supporting the Annual Diocesan Ministries Appeal. Your generosity helps support the work of the local Church on the Diocesan level.

Thanksgiving - Thank You Thank you to those of you who

gave to our ECHO Food Shelf collection last weekend before the Feast of Thanksgiving. You generously donated 100 pounds of non-perishable food items. Thank you for your gifts!!!

Thank You - Worship Committee This is a busy time for our Worship

Committee as only three weeks ago we set up our beautiful fall decorations. (*Although it is a brief time, it is long enough as some of our pumpkins are smelling like something, but not pumpkin pie!) This past Friday afternoon, while you were enjoying an afternoon of football or were on your feet for shopping, our committee was taking down the fall decorations and setting up the decorations for the Advent season. This, too, is a short-lived season as we are “finalizing” our plans for decorating our church for the Christmas season. Thank you Worship Committee for all of your help!

Advent Prayer Service with the Bishop

All families, especially those with children, are invited to attend an Advent Prayer Service with Bishop John M. LeVoir on Sunday, December 11th. The service is at 4:00 pm in Morgan at the Church of St. Michael. This service is designed to help us focus on Advent and prepare for the true meaning of Christmas, centered on the birth of Jesus. Families are encouraged to bring the Baby Jesus figure from their home nativity set. The figure will be blessed by Bishop LeVoir individually as families come forward in procession. There will be a blessing on families and expectant mothers as they prepare for Jesus’ birth in their hearts. A “swaddling clothes” collection (blankets, sleepers, layette items, etc.) will be taken for babies in need and given to We Care in Morgan. Any cash donations will also be taken to We Care in Morgan. For more information, contact the diocesan evangelization and catechesis offices at 507-233-5325

Last week we issued another check in the amount of $25,000.00 to the Loyola School system. We are nearly equal in our contributions to what we gave last year at this time to the Catholic School as well as the Catholic Pastoral Center. If the generosity of our stewardship continues, I anticipate pastorally to have all of our commitments covered by the close of April of 2017. We are having a very good year of stewardship. Thank you for your gifts.

The 2016 Diocesan Ministries Appeal is well underway. Last weekend was “Commitment Sunday” for Holy Rosary parish. We had the opportunity to watch the video and to enjoy some refreshments and fellowship in the parish social hall. In supporting the DMA, we contribute to important ministries in the diocese, but we also support the project we have identified for our parish of continuing the good work of Catholic education here in our greater Mankato area. As we reflect on what our pledge should be, prayerfully keep in mind God’s generosity to you. Recognizing that generosity, the DMA offers a great opportunity to return to God some of that generosity we have received. This year the theme, “A Legacy of Faith; A Future of Hope,” Bishop LeVoir invites us to continue the legacy of faith that we’ve been blessed with.

Campaign for Human Development

The collection for the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) provides funding for groups that make lasting change and uplift the poor in the United States. CCHD’s grants improve education, support economic development, and create affordable housing in low-income neighborhoods. Help us continue to defend human dignity and build communities of solidarity. Please give to the CCHD Collection.
