The sun rises over Lansdowne Centre at last year’s Christmas Fund Drive-Thru Event, while volunteers direct donors to the drop-off area.
The 4th Annual Richmond Christmas Fund Drive-Thru Event will be held Novem-ber 27, at Lansdowne Centre. From 6:00am to 10:30am, volunteers set up next to the Canada Line station will be collecting dona-tions of cash and toys for the Christmas Fund. Anyone who donates will be treated to a McDonald’s muffi n and Van Houtte coff ee.
“That this event is now in its fourth year speaks to the incredible support we’ve received from the community,” says Eliza-beth Specht, Executive Director of Volunteer Richmond. “It’s such an amazing feeling to be standing in the dark at six in the morning, and then see the fi rst pair of headlights, then another, and another. All of these people driving up to make a donation – we’re just so grateful they keep coming out year after year.”
In addition to Lansdowne, there will be a second drop-off location at River Rock Casino Resort, where River Rock employees will be accepting donations at Bridgeport Station. In return, they’ll be handing out McDonald’s coupons for coff ee and a muffi n.
“We’re very excited to have River Rock as a partner,” says Specht. “They’re really enthusi-astic about being part of the event. And the location is great, especially for those taking the Canada Line. You can make a donation, get your coupon, and hop on a train, all in less than fi ve minutes. It’s certainly a conve-nient way to give!”
QM/FM’s Arran Henn will be live on-location at Lansdowne, and you can be sure that Santa will make an appearance as well. Inevitably, there will also be a few surprises.
“Part of the fun is that we never know who will show up,” says Specht. “Last year, both Richmond RCMP and Richmond Fire-Rescue stopped by to make donations. Nurse Next Door came with a mini-convoy of three cars. And Ideon Packaging brought a truck so big it wouldn’t fi t under our tent!”
Along with the supporters and sponsors already mentioned are The Richmond Re-view, PODS, the City of Richmond, and Great Events, as well as the dozens of businesses that provide volunteers.
“Teamwork makes the event happen,” says Specht. “And we couldn’t be prouder of the team we have.”
Many people know that the Richmond Christmas Fund provides toys and books for children in need. Equally important, however, are the grocery vouchers. Everyone who registers with the program – adults, seniors, children, teenagers – receives a $25 grocery voucher, so they can enjoy a warm Christmas meal.
Except this year, the grocery voucher isn’t for $25, but $35.
“Simply put, we were able to increase the amount because of the generosity of our donors,” says Elizabeth Specht, Executive
Director of Volunteer Richmond. “We know liv-ing costs are on the rise, so this is something we’ve wanted to do for a long time. We’re in a position now to off er greater support to those we serve, and it’s all thanks to the giving spirit of our community.”
The grocery voucher will remain at $35 for the foreseeable future, though the Christ-mas Fund’s long-term goal is to increase the amount even further.
“We chose $35 because we know it’s sus-tainable,” says Specht. “We didn’t want to raise the value one year, then have to decrease it
the next. This is a level we can stay at for some time. It’s the next step up for the Christmas Fund, in terms of the help we’re able to provide. Hopefully, we can take another step soon.”
The Richmond Christmas Fund mobilizes the community’s spirit of giving to make holiday wishes come true for nearly 2,000 low-income Richmond residents each year. Each person registered with the program receives a grocery voucher and over 700 children under 15 years old also receive toys or gift cards donated to the program.
Lansdowne Centre has more than earned its reputation as a community mall. Just ask Volunteer Richmond.
During the holiday season, Volunteer Richmond operates the Richmond Christmas Fund, a program that provides assistance to families in need. And over the years, Lansd-owne has been one of the biggest supporters.
“They contribute in so many diff erent ways, it’s hard to know where to start,” says Elizabeth Specht, Executive Director of Volunteer Rich-mond. “The list just goes on and on.”
So why not begin with the donations? On average, Lansdowne contributes $6,500 to the Christmas Fund every year. About $1,500 comes from the mall’s recycling program, for which you may have seen posters around the food court. Lansdowne donates the
remaining $5,000 so the Christmas Fund can purchase gift cards for teenagers.
Then there’s the gift wrap booth. From De-cember 1 through December 24, Lansdowne provides space and supplies to Christmas Fund volunteers, who wrap gifts in exchange for donations. This annual fundraising activity brings in an additional $2,500 a year.
“Lansdowne goes above and beyond to accommodate our volunteers,” says Specht. “And hopefully the gift wrap service helps bring more customers to the mall. It’s a great example of a mutually benefi cial community partnership.”
Last but not least is the Christmas Fund Drive-Thru Event. Lansdowne began hosting it two years ago, and will be doing so again this year, on November 27. At the event, volun-
teers collect donations of cash and toys, and in return, provide people with a McDonald’s muffi n and Van Houtte coff ee.
“The popularity of the Drive-Thru event increased dramatically with Lansdowne’s in-volvement,” says Specht. “It’s an ideal location, off ering excellent visibility. We couldn’t ask for a better home than Lansdowne.”
As for the mall, they’re proud of their part-nership with the Christmas Fund.
“It’s incredibly rewarding working with community groups like the Christmas Fund,” says Bronwyn Bailey, Marketing Manager at Lansdowne Centre. “We’re always happy to do what we can, because we know it makes a diff erence. If our contributions can make the community a little bit better, a little bit stronger, then it’s all worth it.”
