DO YOU HAVE A BIG BUT?
Please note that this ‘but’ only has one T.
Last month I suggested that we should look to see what is beyond the Yes. What is keeping us
from looking beyond that yes? Well it could be that we have a big but, getting in our way. For
example;
I would love to work at the check-in table BUT, I might miss my favorite song to dance
too.
I would chair a Wednesday event BUT, I don’t have anyone to help me.
I would run for the Board BUT, I don’t have time.
Do any of these things sound familiar? Are we using our BUTs to get out of helping where we
are needed? Each member should check their BUTs at the door and look to see what might be
beyond the ‘Yes.’
Butting out,
John Inks

Dance Floor Reunion Delbert Stewart and Joe Sepesy first met while attending USAF ROTC classes at Kent State
University in the autumn of 1968. One afternoon, instead of studying, they were playing
pool in the rec room, knowing fully well that their days at KSU were numbered – bad grades,
money concerns, the draft – in general, their futures.
During the game Delbert told Joe he would not be able to afford another quarter at Kent and
that he was concerned about the draft and having to go to Vietnam. Joe told Delbert he had
already decided to enlist in the US Army to attend Warrant Officer Flight Training (WOFT).
“Why don’t you enlist – fly helicopters in the army? All you need is a high school diploma,
pass an aptitude test and physical exam.”
With very little thought, Delbert said, “That sounds pretty good to me.” So, the two
teenagers agreed to enlist in the buddy program and were sworn into the US Army on
December 12, 1968.
Officially, Delbert and Joe were soldiers, not in uniform yet, but still soldiers. They had
enlisted in the Army’s delayed-entry program and would not report for active duty until
March 6, 1969, when a guaranteed slot for flight school would be available for them. Their obligation to the Army after
completing flight school would be four years of active duty.
On March 6, 1969, both teens reported for active duty in Cleveland. They were flown to Fort Polk, Louisiana, for basic
training, during which Delbert injured one of his knees. Ten weeks later they were bused to Fort Wolters, Texas, for primary
helicopter flight training. A couple of days later, Delbert reinjured his knee. After convalescing, Delbert left Ft. Wolters to
train as a medic, and later, was stationed in Germany; while Joe completed WOFT and served three tours of duty in Vietnam
as a Huey pilot.
Decades later, Joe became a ballroom dancer and beginning in 2016, attended many Wednesday, ONCJC dances at the
Quirk Cultural Center. He would sit in the same seat, where the partition was folded against the wall. Delbert would sit
three or four seats away, nearer to the corner with Sharon Lichon. Delbert and Joe were unaware of each other’s presence.
In March 2018, Joe and Linda Rios began dating. The couple danced most Friday evenings at the Avon Oaks Ballroom, one
of Joe’s regular dance venues, in Girard, Ohio. Also, in March, members of ONCJC, including Delbert and Sharon Lichon,
began to attend dances at Avon Oaks. One evening, Delbert noticed Joe’s Word Dances books that were on display. Upon
seeing a flyer with a picture of Joe next to a helicopter, he said to Sharon, “I know this guy!”
As Joe was walking off the floor, Delbert approached him with questions about basic training and the WOFT program. It
took Joe about a minute to make the connection. But his memories of Delbert, back to their days of Air Force ROTC at
Kent, began to resurface, becoming clearer and clearer. Delbert and Joe hadn’t seen each another in 49 years!
Delbert told Joe he had frequently thought about him and their military connection which was severed during Pre-Flight
training at Fort Wolters, Texas. “I thought you were killed in Vietnam,” he said, “but couldn’t find out for sure.” The
reunited buddies talked some more and of course, would continue to reconnect regularly on Wednesdays at the Quirk.
Since this remarkable coincidence occurred, Delbert and Joe, with Sharon and Linda, have spent much time together, on the
dance floor as well as enjoying other activities.

Another coincidence: Delbert and Joe were both born on May 24, 1950.
On December 1, 1969, the US Selective Service System held a lottery. Three hundred, sixty-six capsules, each containing
a day and month (January 1 through December 31, including February 29) were drawn to determine the order for drafting
young men into military service. Joe and Delbert’s birthday, May 24, was the thirty-first date to be drawn. But both had
already enlisted, thereby minimizing the chances that they would serve as infantrymen in Vietnam.

HALLOWEEN HIGHLIGHTS Creativity and fun were on display at ONCJC’s annual Halloween party on Wednesday October 30th! Members and guests
were dressed in everything from “This is my Halloween costume” t-shirts to beautifully detailed costumes and make-up.
Spirits were high all evening with wonderful music and dancing, and outstanding food and treats provided by members and
guests. Prizes were awarded in these categories:

Ken Olnek
Most Original
Jim Peticca
Best Group or Couple
Neil and Georgia Brandt

There were so many interesting Halloween treats that it was difficult to pick the most creative! After
much discussion, the judges determined that the creepy “popcorn hands” made by Janis Borkowski
was the winner, nudging out the mummy cookies, the cheesecake eyeball, and the veggie monster.
Everything was fantastic!
Thanks to Judie Connor and her committee, Debbie Graybeal, Kaye
Haskins, Evie Hartman, and Ed Leszek who made this such a fun evening.
Many thanks to all the members and guests who put much time and thought
into their costumes and those who brought wonderful food and goodies
and lent a hand where needed. Thanks also to Deejays Dave Wilson
and Mary Friberg who kept the music going and the dance floor full! It
was a SPOOKTACULAR evening!
