Dear CGMSN Families, We feel so lucky to be part of your team – a team that cares dearly for our kids and works collectively to promote and celebrate their success. Thank you for every backpack checked, all guidance given, every event chaperoned, and the list continues. We would like to introduce two recent additions to the MSN instructional staff. Mrs. Jordan Schonegg joined our team as a 7th grade science teacher. Mrs. Schonegg previously taught middle school science in Plainfield, Indiana. Mr. Paul Miller joined our team and is teaching Spanish. We are happy to have him, and he is making a big difference for our Spanish classes. This month, MSN will be celebrating our veterans of the armed forces from the Center Grove community with our annual Veterans Day Breakfast and Convocation. Both our students and staff have been working diligently on preparations, as we are excited to have over 140 veterans attending as guests of our school. North is excited to welcome a panel of guest speakers who have served our country. This will undoubtedly highlight the convocation this year. As always, we look forward to the opportunity for our students, staff, and community to connect and celebrate our local heroes in our own special way. Our MSN PTO sponsored a Fright Night dance on October 25. Exactly 299 of our students dressed in their favorite costumes and enjoyed some awesome Friday night social time at their school. Pleasant Grove Elementary students in grades K-2 also visited MSN in October to parade our hallways in their vocabulary word costumes and be treated by our staff. We were so excited to see them that we decided to dress up in our own vocabulary word costumes.

The criteria used for students of the month: positive attitude, good citizenship, respectful to staff and students and gives maximum effort. Nine week 1 Honor Roll will be handed out the week of November 4th. All 6th graders who make the Straight A or AB Honor Roll will be given a certificate and a window cling. For any 7th and 8th graders who make the Straight A or AB Honor Roll, you will be given your certificate and can stop in to Student Services and see Mrs. Triwedi to pick up a cling if you are in need of one.

Meetings are from 6:45 - 7:20 am in the Cafeteria at CGMSN.

Parents/guardians dropping off or picking up students at school must use the “Drop-off/ Pick-up” lane.

Students are not allowed to cross to or from the parking lot unescorted. They must be escorted across the street by a parent or guardian.

Parents/guardians parking in the parking lot for drop off or pick-up are required to escort their student across the street to/from the building. This policy is designed for the safety of our students/your child.

If your child needs to leave school early for an appointment or other planned event, please send a note signed by a parent giving us the time and reason for the early dismissal. Your child must bring that note to the Student Services Office upon arrival to school. We will then write them a pass to leave class and meet you in the Student Services Office at the appropriate time.

Maximizing Student Achievement MeansMinimizing Classroom Interruptions

One of the most important things that school administrators can do to maximize student learning is to minimize the number of distractions experienced by teachers and students within the classroom. Often even the smallest interruptions can spoil the flow of a lesson, or catch a student at a critical time in the learning process. In order to minimize classroom interruptions, we will deliver messages and/or materials to students twice during the school day. Please see the options for student deliveries below:

1. Deliver during my student's lunchtime. 2. Deliver during my student's last period. 3. My student knows an item is being

delivered and will pick-up item in student services - No notice needed.

In the event that a message is related to a family or medical emergency, please ask for an administrator so that messages of this nature can be delivered to your child in the appropriate manner.

We appreciate your help as we continue to maximize student achievement at MSN.

Parents need to call the Attendance Hotline, 317-885-3392, before 10:00 am to report their student’s absence for the day.

State law requires the following: No student can be in possession of prescription or Non-prescription drugs in school.

All medications have to be stored in the nurse’s office. Prescription medications have to be in their original container with dosage directions on the label.

Non-prescription medications (e.g. Tylenol/Advil) have to be stored in the nurse’s office with a parent note.

Make-up work is the responsibility of the student. A student will receive an equal number of days to make up work as he/she was absent from school. A request for make-up work can be made on the third consecutive day a student is absent by calling the Student Services Office (885-8800 ext. 5008) before 8:30 a.m. Requests received after 8:30 a.m. cannot be processed until the following school day. Assignment requests are prepared during the teacher’s preparation period; therefore, requests must be limited to extended illnesses. The make-up work and student’s books are to be picked up in the Student Services Office before 3:30 p.m. A student who is absent the day of a test is expected to take the test upon returning to school. Again, students are encouraged to record daily assignments, long-term projects, and upcoming events in their agenda.

AUTHOR VISIT: November 13th

DAN GEMEINHART lives in a small town in the middle of Washington State with his wife and

three young daughters. He was a teacher-librarian in an elementary school for fourteen years. He

plays guitar and reads constantly. Dan Gemeinhart was born in Frankfurt, Germany where his father

was in the Army. His family moved a lot when he was growing up, so he went to a different school

almost every year until he was in middle school. He finished high school in Kennewick, Washington

where he met his future wife.

He went to college at Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington, where he studied history and

how to be a teacher. When he graduated, he got married and lived in Cairo, Egypt, where they rode

camels and climbed the pyramids. After Egypt, they moved to Wenatchee, Washington, where he

got his dream job as a librarian. His wife is a high school English teacher in nearby Cashmere, where

they live with their three daughters. Dan wrote for ten years before finally getting his first book

published. He is the author of five novels including The Honest Truth, Some Kind of Courage, Scar

Island, Good Dog and his newest novel, The Remarkable Journey of Coyote Sunrise. Visit him at

6th Grade Language Arts

Students have and will continue to learn about the importance of becoming a “Close Reader.” The goal in close reading

is to build useful knowledge as students analyze the author’s message and appreciate the author’s craft. In addition to

reviewing simple sentences, run-on sentences and sentence fragments, we will also focus on compound sentences. We

are now moving full-steam ahead into Greek Mythology, which nicely enriches what students have been working on in

Social Studies. Informational text is a hot topic on the Indiana test, iLearn. Thus, students will have many opportunities

to engage in nonfiction reading--from our various sources: ReadWorks, Scope magazine, and the Close Reader. In

addition, students will write an informational essay and read the novel, Refugee. We look forward to sharing the

experience of reading another novel together!

6th Grade Math

We are working hard in math to sharpen our basic skills while working through the units involving decimals and

fractions. Students will be performing all four operations as well as comparing and ordering these interesting numbers.

We have also implemented our ICAN acronym for solving problems. Be sure to ask your student about ICAN! We will

soon move into Ratios, Proportions and Percent along with Algebra and begin solving one and two-step equations and

inequalities. Please continue to practice computation skills at home as they are critical in your child’s success in sixth

grade math.

6th Grade Social Studies

We have very much enjoyed our time in Ancient Greece over the past couple of weeks! For November, we will dive

deeper into the Ancient Greek civilization to learn about their government, cultural achievements, and the battles that

led totheir downfall. We will celebrate our learning of Ancient Greece by having a Greek Day full of fun activities that tie

into the Ancient Greek culture. Then, we will need our passports and time machines ready because we will be leaving

Greece and traveling to our next destination – Ancient Rome!

6th Grade Science

Houston we have lift off! In science class this month, we are ready to continue our big adventure as we have blasted off

into space. We have already learned about how the earth, moon, and sun move about one another and work together

to create different situations (seasons, day and night, etc.) We are excited to move even deeper into space to learn

about the inner and outer planets as well as comets, meteors, and asteroids. We will continue our work on moon

phases, and deepen our understanding of why the earth has different seasons before we come back down to earth!

7th Grade Language Arts

The language arts department and students are very excited to welcome the author, Dan Gemeinhart, to CGMSN on

November 13th. Everyone has enjoyed reading his novel Scar Island, a fast-paced, adventure-filled realistic fiction novel.

We’ve had lots of great discussions about descriptive writing, character development, and theme as we read. We

encourage students to continue reading his other books if they enjoyed this one – we want to keep that love of reading

going!! Classes will continue to study vocabulary and grammar daily, with special emphasis on sentence types and

avoiding run-ons and fragments. We will then be beginning an in-depth non-fiction reading unit that kicks off with an

emphasis on central idea and text structure skills.

7th Grade Math

In 7th grade math, students are continuing to work with rational numbers. Next time you are at the store, be sure to ask

your student to find the unit rate of the item to find the best buy! We have mastered converting between fractions,

decimals, and percents and will continue to use these skills to work with real world percent of a number scenarios.

Pretty soon, you will have a student that can calculate the tip on a restaurant bill, and the tax and price of your item

after any discount you may find (basically a walking calculator)!

7th Grade Social Studies

In the month of November, we will be focusing our efforts on Middle Eastern Curriculum. During this time the content

will be broken down into 3 Categories: Ancient Mesopotamia/Persia, Traditional Culture and the Development of the 3

major religions as the center of all aspects of life, and how modern politics, economics, and religion influence local world

policy. Highlighting this unit of study will be student skits, gallery walks, and “Break Out” learning opportunities to

enhance instruction and great engaging learning opportunities.

7th Grade Science

We had an amazing time building and determining the speed of our roller coasters at the Innovation Center! Thank you

to all who donated cardboard rolls, these were very helpful!!! We could not have done this without you. 7th grade

science will continue mastering Newton’s Laws then turn our attention to ENERGY! We will look at the different forms of

energy and it can be transformed from one type to another.

Chemistry is FUN!! Honors science classes are in the midst of chemistry and things are really making sense. We will be

finishing up our study of the trends within the periodic table and be moving on to elemental bonding. We will explore

the outer shell of the electron cloud and how it allows compounds to form.

Relaxed from fall break, we are well into the second quarter. Honors will read Anne Frank: The Diary of

a Young Girl in Collection 5 this month and English 8 will read the Anne Frank play in their Collection 5. We will

tackle our Essential Learnings related to active/passive voice in writing, generating informational essays, and

analyzing central ideas.

Grammar and language skills continue to be tied in with the literature. Some skills we will continue to

reinforce are the following: ellipses, dashes, parallelism, redundancy, transitions, and active/passive voice.

Interactive journals may be used on most tests. Please ask your student to share.

8th Grade Math In 8th grade math, we will continue exploring solving equations as students begin to discover equations for which no

solution is possible and equations for which infinitely many solutions are possible. We are continuing to use our weekly

skills to spiral back to skills from previous grades and/or from earlier this school year.. Students pick up these papers on

Monday and turn them in on Fridays. Throughout the week, students have multiple opportunities to have their teacher

check their paper, so that they should be ready to turn it in on Friday for their best grade. We will further our journey

into Algebra topics as we move onto linear equations and graphing linear equations focusing on slope and slope

intercept form. Ask your student to describe slope and tell you how to find it!

8th Grade U.S. History Students in the 8th Grade have been learning about the causes of the American Revolution, from the French and Indian

War to taxes, to the Boston Massacre and the Boston Tea Party. Looking forward to November, we will be learning

about the actual war and America’s independence as a new nation!

8th Grade Science In 8th grade science class, students are beginning a survey of physical science. They will begin studying the atoms and the Periodic Table. This will include building a model of the atom as well and learning about how the Periodic Table of elements is arranged and organized. This will then lead to a study of chemical bonds and balancing basic chemical equations. Honors science students will also learn about the properties of water and organic molecules.

In honors biology class, students will learn in detail the chemical processes of photosynthesis and cellular respiration. We will then begin our learning about cellular reproduction and the processes of mitosis and meiosis, which will be a springboard into our study of genetics and heredity.

NATIONAL JUNIOR HONOR SOCIETY

The purpose of CGMSN National Junior Honor Society is to create enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote worthy leadership and citizenship, and to encourage the development of character in students of MSN.

MSN COMMUNITY NEWS:

NJHS members are looking for service opportunities. If you know of a need in the community, please contact one of the sponsors below.

Service opportunities can range from helping a neighbor with yard work to stuffing envelopes to helping “man” a

booth for a civic event. Any ideas are welcome.

Service does not include work done for immediate family.

NJHS MEMBERS:

Remember to have your service hour cards completed and signed each time you complete an hour of service. Cards can be turned

in to the box outside the library.

Second quarter hours are due by December 8, 2019.

2019-2020 CARE-N-CUDDLES

As a welcome to our new fire house, NJHS has chosen to help the White River fire departments by

collecting items for them to use during emergency runs. Sometimes a young child or a pet are involved in a situation

and the fire departments are in need of things to help comfort and/distract the child or pet. To assist, NJHS will be

collecting the following items until November 15th:

Small new stuffed animals for young children

For dogs & cats: collars, leashes, dog treats, and small dog toys

Of course, donations to purchase needed items.

Please send any of the above items to school by 11/15. Boxes will be in the front foyer for any items. Monetary

donations should be placed in the box in the office.
