November 2017 MILFORD BOARD OF EDUCATION NEWS A monthly newsletter from the Milford Exempted Village School District Board of Education The Milford Board of Education met on Thursday, November 9, 2017 at Charles L. Seipelt Elementary. Presentations Welcome Seipelt Principal Sarah Greb spoke about their pilot of the Mindful Music Moments program for the district. The program works in partnership with world- class performing arts organizations to bring daily mindfulness and classical music to schools. Each day students and staff take three minutes to pause, turn inward together, and listen to a brief mindfulness prompt and world-class music. Also, as a wrap-up to recess each day, homerooms take a Mindful Music break to reset and refocus for afternoon learning environments. Veterans’ Recognition The ceremony began with the presentation of colors by the Milford High School ROTC. Milford junior Alexa Mueller sang the National Anthem and the high school chamber singers, led by Tracy Carpenter, sang E Pluribus Unum. Superintendent Nancy House then recognized Milford senior Benjamin Gerding for his leadership in coordinating the Remembrance at the Meadows. Next, Board President Gary Knepp gave a presentation about Milford High School graduates who served in World War I. Mr. Knepp and the Milford Junior High School Builder’s Club presented more than 300 boxes, as well as, cash donations to Diana Lawrence of Troop Box Ministries. Great Oaks Report Mr. Dave Yockey shared that Great Oaks will have a renewal of its operating levy in 2018. Athletics/Extracurricular Report Mrs. Marques and Mr. Lucas shared the following update. ATHLETICS Milford football team ended their first winning season in over 15 years; captured a share of the ECC championship; and qualified for the playoffs for the first time in over 30 years. Harris Craycraft qualified for OHSAA regional cross country meet and placed 62 nd overall. The water polo teams capped their season with an 8 th place finish while the girls placed 9 th in the Ohio State Championships. The Dance Team’s annual Youth Clinic will be held December 19 for Kindergarten through 8 th grade students. Practices for all Winter sports teams are underway with contests to begin soon. The Milford Athletic Booster’s Craft Show will be held at Milford High School on December 2. ACTIVITIES Milford Drama’s fall show “Exhibit This! The Museum Comedies” will run November 17-19. Notable, the advanced a cappella Choir, traveled to the National A Cappella Festival in Dayton. The MHS Winter Choir Concert will take place on November 30, at 7 p.m. in the MHS auditorium. Throughout December, Notable, and Chamber Singers will be performing in venues around the Milford community. The Marching Band had success at Midstates Band Competition at Colerain High School last month, winning Reserve Grand Champion, and Overall Best Colorguard and Best Visual. The band travelled to Indianapolis for the Bands of America Grand Nationals. Business Advisory Council (BAC) Mr. George Lucas shared that the BAC did not meet in October. The next BAC meeting date will be posted on the district website.

2017.• ResolutionforproposedEnterpriseZoneAgreement

forMidwestBestBBQ&Creamery.

Superintendent’sReportMrs.NancyHouseTheBoardapprovedaresolutioninsupportofSB216,anEducationDeregulationBill.Thebill’sintentistoreduceregulationsandmandatesfor

localschoolstoincreaselocalcontrol,improveefficiency,reducecosts,andimprovestudentachievement.TheBoard’sresolutionwillbeforwardedtotheOhioSenateEducationCommittee.
