Eli was the last one in the porta potty so, Cole and I decided to mess with him. We went behind the porta potty and pushed it. It was lighter than we thought and we almost tipped it over. We heard a scream and Eli yell. Of course, there were lines of people who heard him scream. He came out and chased us around the course. I was on the ground laughing. In 1930 DeWitt schools organized the first Athletic Booster Club. Physics was required for graduation. The basketball team beat Calamus for the Clinton County championship and DeWitt girls were playing basketball under the direction of Ms. Yegge. Coach Baird organized Golden Glove boxing at the Moose Club and had 50 youth participating. DeWitt’s Air Show had 60 planes and the Old Majestic Theater was now showing “talking movies”. Local boys disregard city ordinances and had their roller skates confiscated. DeWitt unveils its new colors… purple & gold…and they have their first Homecoming game with a parade and band. 700 alumni attend with the first graduating class going back to 1869. The football team goes 7-1-1 with the only score given up all season coming from an intercepted pass!

Born in 1939, Jan Bergert is a 1958 graduate of DeWitt high school. He attended a one room school in Mt. Joy, IA, and later at Butler #2 which is now part of Pioneer Village in Scott County, now named Walnut Grove school. When their house was bought by Scott County Park, his parents moved to DeWitt on an 80-acre farm with pigs, beef cows and a few chickens. He has three brothers who all are still living. They were all bussed into DeWitt for high school and had a class size of about 70 classmates. He was a member of the FFA. As a freshman he had not planned to go out for football but Harold Birney, his PE teacher and head football coach, gave him football gear during PE and he started practice that afternoon. Howard Ehlers, a long-time Biology teacher and Principal was the Freshman-Sophomore coach. He played Left Guard on offense all 4 years and Nose Guard on defense. During his junior year, the 1956 team went undefeated. He earned Honorable-Mention on the Illowa conference team his senior year. As a sophomore he decided to give wrestling a try for first-year head coach Ray Oles. He weighed about 140-145 lbs. and earned a Letter. He qualified the State wrestling tournament his junior and senior years. His senior year, he lost 2-0 to the eventual State Champ. He was a good student and with a class rank of #4, qualified for the Dean’s scholarship of $100.00 (In 1958 and the cost one year of college was ~$1000.) He enrolled at Dubuque pursuing a Biology major and Chemistry minor. He worked as a Lab Assistant for the General Zoology course. He belonged to the Chemistry club and was President of the Biology club & Vice President of the Phi Omicron fraternity. His senior year he was selected to Who’s Who in American colleges & universities. He later attended the University of Minnesota for graduate school. There he met Betty Brekke. They were married in 1966. In May of 1964 he interviewed at the Mayo Clinic in the Biochemistry department for a position in the steroid lab. In 1972 he became a nephrologist doing kidney stone research. In 1984 he transferred to the department of Laboratory Medicine & Pathology in a research & development position doing renal function test & urinalysis. He retired from Mayo on Dec. 31 2001. He and his wife have two daughters. Lisabeth works for Accenture in Minneapolis, MN and Lora has worked as a pediatric hospitalist at a hospital in Honolulu, Hawaii before moving to Medford, OR to work in a hospital. Jan is currently living in Rochester and spends time traveling, gardening & playing golf.

Don McCune Inducted for Outstanding Contributions as an Individual of Central High School Don McCune is a 1969 graduate of Central and was the first WRESTLING State Champion for Central and is considered to be the first SABER State Champion following the consolidations of the schools. Don McCune participated in athletics as well as fine arts. He was a 4-year member of the Mixed Chorus, Chamber Singers, and had 1 year of involvement in Drama. Don also participated in a variety of sports, including 4 years in Football, 2 years in Track, and 4 years in Wrestling, lettering all 4 years. As a Sophomore, Don McCune completed a perfect wrestling season by winning the State Championship at 95 lbs. He never lost a match that year. Two years later, he had another great season and found himself in the title match at 112 lbs. Leading at one time 4-0, Don eventually was tied and went to overtime with his opponent from Humboldt. Still tied at the end of overtime, Don’s opponent was awarded the win on a referee’s decision. Following graduation from Central, Don earned his bachelor’s degree from Wayne State University. After 2 ½ years of teaching in Australia, Don returned to the United States and continued to teach in Wyoming for a few years. Don ultimately decided to enlist in the Navy. Club Notes The DeWitt Youth Football League entered 2 teams and 40+ players in the Clinton League. The two DeWitt teams played for the League Championship! There were another 25 5th & 6th graders and 135+ 1st- 4th Graders that participated in our Park & Rec Flag Football league. We had a number of Club level volleyball teams also participating throughout the fall as well as some of our youth participating in road races throughout the summer and fall. Congratulations to all and a big THANKS to all of our volunteer coaches!

A few years ago, I started to notice a young man who was going 100 mph… or so it seemed…during the start of practice. I was so impressed with this young guy’s energy that I was naturally drawn to his efforts. As it turns out it was only a warm-up period but there was something so special about what I had seen that I wanted to check back and verify if it had just been an anomaly. Maybe he just had some extra energy that day or he was showing off for someone? Maybe he had lost a bet? Maybe he had just slammed an energy drink? It could have been any of those but what I witnessed was very unusual. So I kept checking in and sure enough EVERY TIME I would watch, the same kind of 100% effort was being made… during a WARM-UP! And it didn’t matter what the conditions were… heat, rain, wind, indoors, outdoors, etc., the effort was always consistently the same! This kind of behavior is so unusual for any athlete, let alone a high schooler. And I have thought more than once about which athletes over the years that I have been here… 31 to be exact… have stood out in my mind for that same kind of all the time effort. I know I was very impressed in recent years by the mental toughness of our Girls Bowling State Champion… Shelby Carrier. I know some of you would say “Bowling?”, but if you ever got a chance to watch her perform, there was just something about the way she carried herself during competition that screamed confidence and toughness. She could back that up with performance as well. I enjoyed building relationships with the athletes I coached and some people know what a close relationship I have with Coach Grell to this day. He would have to be one of those impressive athletes I got the privilege to watch over the course of 4 years at wrestling practice. There is a reason he is our only 4X Conference Champion in program history. No one showed up to work every night like he did. He begged coaches to make practice tougher and push him further because he wanted to get every ounce of effort out of his workouts each night. It was fun to watch. Audra Bark was one of the fiercest competitors we have had here and why she willed herself to succeed on the track and watching Marcus Schnoor compete in anything would reveal why he was selected as Class 3A Player of the Year on a football team with a losing record. I have in my memory a list of other individuals and teams that would be on that list as well but again that sort of exceptional… all the time effort and attitude is rare to find. These athletes were not superhuman. To my knowledge there was nothing unique about their physiology or DNA. Like all competitors, they had their own challenges, set-backs and shortcomings. We have had some great moments over the past few years in our activities programs including a State Champion Boys Golf team and a Boys State Champion Distance Medley Relay team. Our Girls Soccer program has won back-to-back-back WaMaC Championships and we had a Baseball team two years ago that excelled during the season and had a magical run in the post-season for a trip to State. The year before it was our Boys Soccer team that had the same sort of tournament run ending up in the State Championship game. Our Speech team even broke the long tradition of West Delaware dominance and captured the WaMaC Title. All great moments and something special about each group that got them to the top of their particular sport. But in recent years I have had more questions and comments regarding the struggles in our sports programs more than anything else. People have wanted to know what I thought, why is it happening and most importantly what are the answers. And from my perspective, the answers can be as easy as you want to make it. EFFORT. ATTITUDE. WORK. There are not too many things in life worth achieving that don’t take all of those qualities. Many of us look for shortcuts or easy fixes but in my experience those don’t come along too often. If you really want to make something happen for yourself individually or as a team you are going to roll up your sleeves and get to work! And if you really want to achieve something special understand that someone on the other side of the court, mat, field, stage, etc. probably wants it too. There comes a time when it boils down to “What are you going to do?”. And that is one of the reasons I was so impressed… actually inspired… when I saw a young many like Will DeHaan warm up at the start of cross country practice. I have watched him the last 4 years and know he is one of the very special athletes that I will remember for years to come. I have not been surprised one bit to watch him improve and succeed. I only hope athletes of all other sports have been watching him warm-up as well and notice the drive, focus and passion that he has modeled. It takes some talent, skill, technique, and health to be really great. But having a great attitude and giving your best effort is something anyone can do regardless of ability. Many of us back off when it is time to go. Will’s high school story had a tough ending with an injury that held him back at the end of the year. Who knows what his future in running might bring but one thing is for sure, he will not regret that he didn’t work hard enough when he had the opportunity while he was here.

Our choirs had a Homecoming flash mob with all four choirs represented. Chamber Singers joined the "7th Avenue Band" on a tribute to our country for a CDPAC performance. The fall choir concert was held on October 17th. Congratulations to the students who auditioned for Opus and All State! Kyle Holmes will participate in the Opus State Honor Choir on November 16th. They will perform at the Veteran's Day assembly and our winter concert on December 11th at 7:30PM. Ensemble groups did a great job of singing our National Anthem at volleyball matches and will sing this winter at home events as well.

Saber Speech recently held their kick-off meeting and will be electing team officers soon. The team will be providing snacks at the intermission of the fall musical for goodwill donations. Large group practices begin at the end of November as we get ready to head into contest season!

They will be honoring our veterans service and sacrifice at the start of each show. The Speech team will provide goodies and gladly accept goodwill donations during intermission. There are over 60 students participating in some capacity with this year's musical as well as a live Toto. Please help us "Pack the PAC" and support their efforts! They will be offering a teaser performance for the HS/MS on Thursday, November 9. The seven lead characters will also participate in character throughout the Intermediate School and Ekstrand Elementary before taking a taste of Oz to the shops downtown DeWitt.

You may have noticed the new paint job on the concession stand at a recent football game and wondered who painted these fabulous sabers. Maddie Kisling, Kyle Schmitt, Julia Campbell, Maggie Murphy and Taylor Ehredt did a fantastic job painting these. Make sure to thank them when you see them. Maddie Kisling and Kyle Schmitt worked overtime to make sure those sabers were done for homecoming.
