Our exclusive newsletter begins with very warm greetings to the entire dental faculty and its students especially the Freshers…welcome!

It is a pleasure to introduce this newsletter, which will be published monthly, as to keep students up-dated to all what interests them from simple study "tips & tricks" to awesome cases handled by students in their clinical years, third, fourth and fifth.

Nevertheless, MADS newsletter is a window which interlinks you to the faculty, and both, to the outside non-dental related reality. Being so, makes it essential for you to be an active individual. Remember…Dentistry is Dynamic, Improvable, and Amazing; it is a lifestyle which you have chosen.

Hereby, it is an opportunity for all dental, hygiene, technology students as well as the dental assistants to speak their mind; this newsletter is a

platform for intellectual freedom & creativity. Therefore, it is a delight to have your input, feedback, and/or participation through writing an academic article, showing off your talent, sharing a healthy low-sugar low-fat recipes, introducing ideas to improve public health & community perception towards dentists…etc.

Pieces of Advice For

The Public's

Oral Health

PUBLIC

HEALTH

WORKSHOP 3rd November, 2015

The workshop was delivered by: Dr. Gabriella Gatt (BChD , MSc Paedodontics - London) Dr. Paula Vassallo (Consultant Dental Public Health, Lecturer of Preventive & Community Dentistry) The lecturers guided the students with regards to giving a consistent and a united simple advice, avoiding jargon, for the public to ingest as to prepare the students for the upcoming events. Students who attended have gained both the knowledge & a certificate This page sums up all the basic information, which has been discussed, of both topics.

ENCOURAGE MOTHERS TO BREAST FEED, BECAUSE…

o It strengthens infant's immunity,

o Unlike milk formula, no added sugars or conservatives,

o Ensuring systemic & dental health, no decay…no obesity.

Is dental Erosion a Public Health Concern?

YES, it certainly is especially when Malta's 11, 13, and 15 years olds are ranking the first place in "wine & spirit consumers" among 41 countires involved in this study– WHO HBSC 2006.

Adolescenece & children account for 65% of soft drinks sales. Whilst 42% of fruit drinks are consumed by children between the ages of 2 & 9. This is extremely worrying, as it also accompanies other systemic manifestations i.e. diabetes & obesity.

Malta's National Dental Survey involves screening the population for signs/severity of erosion. Therefore, the message to be delivered to our community is to avoid carbonated fizzy/soft drinks as they have absolutely no nutritious value & weaken the tooth structure rendering it to being sensitive/prone to caries.

REMEMBER…

Be consistent when giving an advice…be as simple as possible when delivering a message. YOU should be a ROLE MODEL to the advice you give.

Aetiology of dental caries: Tooth, Sugar, Bacteria & Time.

There are 57 names of sugars (hidden/added).

WHO recommends only 5% of daily sugar intake = 25g (5 tea spoons) e.g. Medium portion of Barn Flakes = 5g Small 200ml Orange Juice = 20g

Frequency is the key risk factor to caries; so RESTRICT SUGAR TO MEAL TIMES.

For children up to 3 years: parents should supervise brushing x2 daily as soon as teeth erupt. a) Use only smear of toothpaste

containing less than 1000 ppm Fluoride.

b) Go for sugar free medicines. c) Don't allow children to lick/eat

toothpaste. Children 3-6 years:

a) Apply pea-sized toothpaste with 1350-1500 ppm Fluoride.

b) Spit out rather than rinsing. c) Visit the dentist to apply

Fluoride Varnish (x2 a year). Children 7 to young adults: All the

above, Plus… a) Visit the dentist to fissure seal

the newly erupted molars. b) Children aged 8, who can spit,

can rinse with a mouth wash on a separate occasion from tooth brushing.

I'VE JUST CREATED A

Case Report By Fatemah Abdullah – 3rd Yr MDS

Mr. JB is a 48 year old gentleman with a complete upper & lower removable dentures. His old sets have lost their aesthetics; & will eventually lose their function – Note how the anterior sextants come into contact as teeth are worn down; the incisal angle, which determines the overbite & overjet is completely absent.

Fabricating a new set of complete dentures demands both an extremely good communication between clinicians & lab technologist – A team work which also involves the patient being co-operative.

I had the oppurtunity to fabricate the first complete dentures at Sant Vincent De Poul Residence. After taking the patient's history, an extraoral & an intraoral examination were caried out; the patient has the eperfect maxillary tuberosities being the supporting structures for the upper denture. He also has a firm lower residual ridge which "made my day"!

Briefing out the stages of fabricating a denture: (Blue refers to clinical work/Green refers to lab work)

1. Primary impression taken with a stock tray; material of choice, Alginate.

2. Casting the primary models to fabricate the special trays. 3. Border mould the special trays to take the secondary impression;

material of choice, ZOE for a close-fitting functional denture base. 4. Fabricating the final (master) cast. 5. Jaw relation Registration with waxed occlusion rims.

6. Mounting the occlusion rims on the articulator to set-up the acrylic teeth; shade A3.

7. Try-in visit, no further adjustments needed as form, function & aesthetics are achieved – Even though there is 1mm right shift of the midline, patient's acceptance achieved.

8. Finishing & polishing the complete dentures with an acrylic base.

9. The delivery & maintenance of the denture's status will be on 9th Nov. 2015.

The patient was so pleased that he did not want to leave the clinic! It is worth to note that this process lasted for 6 weeks (5 visits) to finally achieve the aim…it paid off eventually.

One must appreciate that the new set of dentures achieved a 3mm labial support which has been lost in the previous old sets…observe these two pictures

Since it is an aging population in Malta, More Cases to Come…More Smiles to Create!
